Estimating the Lagrangian residual circulation in the Iroise Sea ArchiMer
Muller, Heloise; Blanke, Bruno; Dumas, Franck; Lekien, Francois; Mariette, Vincent.
In this study, the Lagrangian residual circulation in the Iroise Sea is estimated by a numerical method where the trajectories of the particles released in any given velocity field are calculated by a diagnostic tool. From their knowledge, the residual Lagrangian currents are computed over a whole number of M2 tidal cycles. The Lagrangian residual circulation is mapped from sea surface currents measured by HF radars and from the surface currents computed with the Model for Applications at Regional Scales (MARS), a regional 3D ocean model forced, here, by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) regional meteorological model. In order to overcome inconvenient space- and time-variations in radar coverage, the measured radar data are interpolated,...

High-resolution atmospheric forcing for regional oceanic model: the Iroise Sea ArchiMer
Muller, Heloise; Dumas, Franck; Blanke, Bruno; Mariette, Vincent.
This study was aimed at modeling, as realistically as possible, the dynamics and thermodynamics of the Iroise Sea by using the Model for Applications at Regional Scale (MARS), a regional ocean 3D model. The horizontal resolution of the configuration in use is 2 km with 30 vertical levels. The 3D model of the Iroise Sea is embedded in a larger model providing open boundary conditions. As regards the atmospheric forcing, the originality of this study is to force the regional ocean model with the high-resolution (6 km) regional meteorological model, Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF). In addition, as the air surface temperature is highly sensitive to the sea surface temperature (SST), this regional meteorological model is improved by taking into account a...

Assessing spatial and temporal variability of phytoplankton communities' composition in the Iroise Sea ecosystem (Brittany, France): A 3D modeling approach. Part 1: Biophysical control over plankton functional types succession and distribution ArchiMer
Cadier, Mathilde; Gorgues, Thomas; Sourisseau, Marc; Edwards, Christopher A.; Aumont, Olivier; Marie, Louis; Memery, Laurent.
Understanding the dynamic interplay between physical, biogeochemical and biological processes represents a key challenge in oceanography, particularly in shelf seas where complex hydrodynamics are likely to drive nutrient distribution and niche partitioning of phytoplankton communities. The Iroise Sea includes a tidal front called the ‘Ushant Front’ that undergoes a pronounced seasonal cycle, with a marked signal during the summer. These characteristics as well as relatively good observational sampling make it a region of choice to study processes impacting phytoplankton dynamics. This innovative modeling study employs a phytoplankton-diversity model, coupled to a regional circulation model to explore mechanisms that alter biogeography of phytoplankton in...

The Seasonal and Inter-Annual Fluctuations of Plankton Abundance and Community Structure in a North Atlantic Marine Protected Area ArchiMer
Benedetti, Fabio; Jalabert, Laëtitia; Sourisseau, Marc; Becker, Beatriz; Cailliau, Caroline; Desnos, Corinne; Elineau, Amanda; Irisson, Jean-olivier; Lombard, Fabien; Picheral, Marc; Stemmann, Lars; Pouline, Patrick.
Marine Protected Areas have become a major tool for the conservation of marine biodiversity and resources. Yet our understanding of their efficacy is often limited because it is measured for a few biological components, typically top predators or species of commercial interest. To achieve conservation targets, marine protected areas can benefit from ecosystem-based approaches. Within such an approach, documenting the variation of plankton indicators and their covariation with climate is crucial as plankton represent the base of the food webs. With this perspective, we sought to document the variations in the emerging properties of the plankton to better understand the dynamics of the pelagic fishes, mammals and seabirds that inhabit the region. For the...

Etude numérique de la mer d'Iroise : dynamique, variabilité du front d'Ouessant et évaluation des échanges cross-frontaux ArchiMer
Cambon, Gildas.
This thesis was written in the framework of a realistic modelisation for the study of the Iroise Sea. The first two parts deal with its digital implementation and validation based on observation. We then focus on the analysis of the main structures and physical processes operating in the Iroise Sea: first the Ouessant tidal front and the processes associated with the connexion of surface and bottom mixing layers, then the average eulerian residual circulation for which we tried to quantify the relative part of the different processes involved. We then mapped the different dynamic regimes involved: some cyclostrophic regimes can be observed around the islands and in shallow water areas, and a geostrophic regime clearly appears, at front level, especially in...

Seismic reflection imaging of shallow oceanographic structures ArchiMer
Piete, Helene; Marie, Louis; Marsset, Bruno; Thomas, Yannick; Gutscher, Marc-andre.
Multichannel seismic (MCS) reflection profiling can provide high lateral resolution images of deep ocean thermohaline fine structure. However, the shallowest layers of the water column (z < 150 m) have remained unexplored by this technique until recently. In order to explore the feasibility of shallow seismic oceanography (SO), we reprocessed and analyzed four multichannel seismic reflection sections featuring reflectors at depths between 10 and 150 m. The influence of the acquisition parameters was quantified. Seismic data processing dedicated to SO was also investigated. Conventional seismic acquisition systems were found to be ill-suited to the imaging of shallow oceanographic structures, because of a high antenna filter effect induced by large...
