IMPROVING THE TOLERANCE OF Vicia faba AGAINST ENVIRONMENTAL SALINITY RESULTED FROM THE IRRIGATION WITH SEA WATER BY USING KNO3 AND (NH4)2SO4 AS CHEMICAL OSMOREGULATORS Acta biol.Colomb.
MOHAMED,KAMEL.
The familiar solutes, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, PO4(3-), SO4(2-), soluble carbohydrates, amino acids and soluble proteins, which play a role in osmotic adjustment were estimated to investigate the role of potassium nitrate and ammonium sulphate as osmoregulators and their effects on the solutes composition. Vicia faba L. was cultivated and irrigated with 5, 10, 15 and 20 % (v:v) sea water. The plants were divided to three groups. The first was irrigated with sea water only. The second was treated with 5 mM KNO3 while the third was treated with 5mM (NH4)2SO4. The plants were left to grow until flowering stage. The results indicated that the non treated group increased the soluble carbohydrates in the roots to avoid the influx of sodium. The treatment with...

Tannins in Baccharis dracunculifolia (Asteraceae): effects of seasonality, water availability and plant sex Acta Botanica
Espírito-Santo,Mário M; Fernandes,G. Wilson; Allain,Luciana R; Reis,Ticiana R. F.
Several ecological, genetic, and environmental factors are known to influence tannin concentration in plant tissues. In this study, the effects of seasonality, water availability, and sex of the plant on tannin concentration in the dioecious shrub Baccharis dracunculifolia were assessed. The effects of water availability on plant shoot growth and its relationship to tannin concentration were also experimentally evaluated. Tannins occurred in B. dracunculifolia from November to May, peaking during the summer (December to March). However, no relationship between tannin concentration, rainfall and temperature was found. No difference in tannin concentration and shoot growth was found between plants in the irrigated and control treatments, this suggesting that...

Methodology for rainwater reservoir dimensioning: a probabilistic approach Agronomy
Wolff, Wagner; Duarte, Sergio Nascimento; Soccol, Olívio José; Rodrigues, Lineu Neiva; Fernandes, Rafael Dreux Miranda.
The aim of this study was to propose a new methodology for reservoir rainwater dimensioning based on probabilistic modeling. Eucalyptus seedlings grown in a greenhouse were used to obtain a hypothetical water demand. Meteorological data were used to estimate the demand (evapotranspiration) and offer (rainfall over the greenhouse coverage). The probability distribution of Wakeby presented the best fit for the rainfall data; therefore, a Wakeby distribution was used to model the flow-duration curve of the greenhouse coverage. For a payback period (T) of 10 years of surplus water demand and water supply deficit, a reservoir with 13.60 m³ was obtained. The proposed methodology combined the simultaneous occurrence of the events to enable the scaling out of a...

A Closed-Type Irrigation System Performaces in the Plant House CIGR Journal
Dewi, Vita Ayu Kusuma; Setiawan, Budi Indra; Minasny, Budiman; Wasodo, Roh Santoso Budi; Liyantono, Liyantono.
Water application in the plant house is usually done by surface irrigation and manual micro-irrigation. Because of the conventional irrigation system’s inefficiency, water-saving irrigation has been developed. Smart or automated irrigation usually uses a microcontroller to maintain irrigation timing and soil moisture conditions. This automation is highly efficient in water application and can increase plant productivity. However, this system is costly and the irrigation components are not always available for smallholder farmers. Here we develop an automatic irrigation technology based on the capillarity principle that dramatically reduces the cost. This irrigation technology does not use any microcontroller device and the components can be easily...
