Valuing the Risk of Death and Injury from Landmines in Thailand AgEcon

This paper presents estimates of the benefits of clearing landmines in rural Thailand using the contingent-valuation (CV) method. The data came from a survey where we asked 341 respondents referendum-type questions that elicit their willingness to pay for landmine clearance. Our estimates imply a value of a statistical life of between US$0.2-0.3 million. The survey also provides estimates of the injury risk-death risk tradeoff and the implicit value of statistical injury. These estimates suggest that the value of lives and injuries saved from mine clearing is likely to be at least an order of magnitude greater than those used in existing studies of mine clearing. Efficiency of food safety management system application, such as HACCP system, depends on personnel employed in a company (salary, social status, job stability, superiors’ relation toward workers and relationship among workers themselves, knowledge background, etc). Results presented in this paper are the results of surveys conducted in food businesses in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A special part of the research is related to employees’ social status and employees’ opinion of their status in a company.

Work Values in Western and Eastern Europe AgEcon

The paper reports on work values in Europe. At the country level we find that job satisfaction is related to lower working hours, higher well-being, and a higher GDP per capita. Moving to the micro level, we turn our attention from job satisfaction to analyse empirically work centrality and work value dimensions (without exploring empirically job satisfaction) related to intrinsic and extrinsic values, power and social elements. The results indicate substantial differences between Eastern and Western Europe. Socio-demographic factors, education, income, religiosity and religious denomination are significant influences.
