Evaluation of Digestibility of Cooked Rice Grain using in vitro Digestion Technique CIGR Journal
Ogawa, Y..
Impact of postharvest and/or food processing (such as flour milling to agricultural and food-resource materials) on the digestibility of foodstuffs was investigated through a simulated gastro-intestinal in vitro digestion technique. The differences among the starch digestibilities of cooked rice grain and slurry were examined. In vitro digestion techniques are commonly applied to starch-based milled materials such as flours used for bread making. However, rice is not usually milled to flour but cooked as a whole for consumption. Therefore, maintaining an intact structure of cooked grain during in vitro digestion is very important to evaluate its starch digestibility. Two hundred grams of polished rice grain were cooked using electric rice cooker with 300...

Titanosauriform teeth from the Cretaceous of Japan Anais da ABC (AABC)
Saegusa,Haruo; Tomida,Yukimitsu.
Sauropod teeth from six localities in Japan were reexamined. Basal titanosauriforms were present in Japan during the Early Cretaceous before Aptian, and there is the possibility that the Brachiosauridae may have been included. Basal titanosauriforms with peg-like teeth were present during the "mid" Cretaceous, while the Titanosauria with peg-like teeth was present during the middle of Late Cretaceous. Recent excavations of Cretaceous sauropods in Asia showed that multiple lineages of sauropods lived throughout the Cretaceous in Asia. Japanese fossil records of sauropods are conformable with this hypothesis.

The role of pre-recruitment processes in the maintenance of a barnacle (Chthamalus challengeri Hoek) patch on an intertidal pebble shore in Japan BJB
APOLINÁRIO,M..
To understand the role of pre-recruitment processes (supply of larvae and recruitment) in the maintenance of an intertidal barnacle (Chthamalus challengeri Hoek) patch, the availability of cyprid larvae and the recruitment on natural pebble substrata was monitored on the Magarisaki pebble shore (Amakusa, Kyushu, Japan) during 1995 and 1996. Also, a hypothesis that predation and/or bulldozing by mobile intertidal mollusks during the post-recruitment period could be an important factor in mortality of these barnacles was tested. The collapse of the adult population and the consequent disappearance of the patch were observed by the middle of 1995. The larval availability was low (<FONT FACE="Symbol">@</FONT> 6 cyprid larvae/100 l), as was the...

Temporal variations in community structure in and around intertidal barnacle (Chthamalus challengeri Hoek) patches on a plebby shore in Japan BJB
APOLINÁRIO,M..
The community structure in and around two barnacle (Chthamalus challengeri Hoek) patches (sites A and B) which extended from the middle to the upper intertidal zone on a pebbly shore in Magarisaki (Amakusa, Kyushu, Japan), was studied during summer and winter of 1995 and 1996. The results show a significant decrease in the proportion of substrate covered by barnacles from January 1995 to July 1996. The number of species, number of individuals, and biomass also decreased in the patch areas through time. There were significant differences between inside and outside the patches for percentage of substrate covered by barnacles, number of individuals, number of species, and biomass during the first year. Numbers of some gastropods were significantly higher in...

Climate reconstruction based on GDGT-based proxies in a paleosol sequence in Japan: Postdepositional effect on the estimation of air temperature ArchiMer
Yamamoto, Yasuto; Ajioka, Taku; Yamamoto, Masanobu.
We investigated branched and isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) in surface soils and a paleosol sequence to understand the effects of environmental and postdepositional factors on branched GDGT composition in different soil types and to reconstruct the past changes in the mean annual air temperature (MAAT) in southwestern Japan during the last 15 ka. The estimated MAAT was overestimated by 6 degrees C and 2 degrees C when the global and regional soil calibrations were applied, respectively. Additionally, the estimated MAAT increased downward by a maximum of 4 degrees C in the upper 30 cm of the soil sequence. This is likely to reflect the addition of newly produced branched GDGTs in subsurface soils. The estimated MAATs in a paleosol...

Quelques réflexions sur la conception japonaise de l'aménagement des pêches ArchiMer
Bailly, Denis.
Coastal fisheries and marine cultures developed under strong biological, economical and social constraints. Among others are limitation of space and resources, limited availibility of capital, hardship of work,... Industrial, urbanistic and touristic development add to these constraints in coastal areas. Coherent scheme for coastal fisheries management, capture and culture, is of an urgent need. In renewable resources and environnement economics, depletion and pollution resulting from common ownership have been the core of the theory about fisheries management. The chronology of Japanese coastal fisheries management system shows a different approach. In law and decision making, social and economic consequences of conflictual uses and of their regulation...

Fisheries women groups in Japan: a shift from well-being to entrepreneurship ArchiMer
Soejima, Kumi; Frangoudes, Katia.
Women’s groups in rural fishery areas were established in the mid-1950s. By 1959, they became integrated in local Fishery Cooperative Associations as parallel organizations. These Fisheries Cooperative Associations, established in 1948, represent all fishers in Japan, who are primarily men. The purpose of the women’s groups was to provide well-being by improving the living conditions of families and communities. While men were busy building the production facilities and the cooperatives, women organized themselves to protect and improve the everyday life of families. From 1995 and the World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, some of these women groups ran economic entrepreneurial activities with the financial support of the State through the...

Submerged karst landforms observed by multibeam bathymetric survey in Nagura Bay, Ishigaki Island, southwestern Japan ArchiMer
Kan, Hironobu; Urata, Kensaku; Nagao, Masayuki; Hori, Nobuyuki; Fujita, Kazuhiko; Yokoyama, Yusuke; Nakashima, Yosuke; Ohashi, Tomoya; Goto, Kazuhisa; Suzuki, Atsushi.
Submerged tropical karst features were discovered in Nagura Bay on Ishigaki Island in the southern Ryukyu Islands, Japan. The coastal seafloor at depths shallower than similar to 130 m has been subjected to repeated and alternating subaerial erosion and sedimentation during periods of Quaternary sea-level lowstands. We conducted a broadband multibeam survey in the central area of Nagura Bay (1.85 x 2.7 km) and visualized the high-resolution bathymetric results over a depth range of 1.6-58.5 m. Various types of humid tropical karst landforms were found to coexist within the bay, including fluviokarst, doline karst, cockpit karst, polygonal karst, uvalas, and mega-dolines. Although these submerged karst landforms are covered by thick postglacial reef and...

Current, catch and weight composition of yellowfin tuna with FADs off Okinawa island, Japan ArchiMer
Kakuma, S.
Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is a main target for the fisheries at Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) off the south of Okinawa island. Catch and weight composition of the tuna were monitored at a fisheries cooperative market from 1989 to 1998. Some distinct weight groups (considered to represent cohorts) appeared in the catch and the weight of these groups increased monthly - presumably as individual tuna grew. Although small, light weight fish were caught year-round, the 2 kg weight group that was recruited in May grew to about 15 kg by May of the next year. There was a significant seasonal cycle in the monthly catches. The catch of heavier weight groups decreased in winter indicating the tuna moved out of this FAD area. At one of huge FADs (Nirai),...

Synthesis on moored FADs in the North West Pacific region ArchiMer
Kakuma, S.
In early 1980s, fad fisheries were introduced from the Philippines to Japan, mainly to Okinawa. The fisheries have well developed becoming one of the main fisheries in Okinawa where 210 fads are approved to deploy in 1999. The annual catch by roughly 1 000 boats (most of them are small) is 2500-4000 mt; average catch from one fad is about 20 mt; average catch by one boat on one day is 73 kilogrammes. fads are also important for easing the fishing pressures on bottom fish stocks. Most of the fads were deployed and managed by local fishermen's groups that have improved the structures of the system to withstand typhoons. The catches are strongly depending on the sites, usually the farther offshore, the better the catches. A variety of fishing methods are...

Notes on types and early specimens of Bombycivora japonica von Siebold, 1824, and of Bombycilla phoenicoptera Temminck, 1828 Naturalis
Oijen, M.J.P. van; Roselaar, C.S..
Roselaar & Prins (2000) indicated there were two syntypes of Bombycivora japonica von Siebold, 1824; a 1st-winter female in the collection of the Zoologisch Museum Amsterdam, while the other, a male, was considered lost. However, in a letter to Temminck, von Siebold made clear that the species was described on the basis of one specimen. His description is clearly taken from a 1st-year male. Temminck (1828) described Bombicilla phoenicoptera based on the same ZMA specimen and an adult female specimen in the National Museum of Natural History in Leiden, collected by von Siebold, which arrived in Leiden in 1827. The latter species is a synonym of the former. Because it is a female, the ZMA specimen cannot be the holotype of Bombycivora japonica. However,...
