The consequences of opening the Sunda Strait on the hydrography of the eastern tropical Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Setiawan, Riza Yuliratno; Mohtadi, Mahyar; Southon, John; Groeneveld, Jeroen; Steinke, Stephan; Hebbeln, Dierk.
The advection of relatively fresh Java Sea water through the Sunda Strait is presently responsible for the low-salinity tongue in the eastern tropical Indian Ocean with salinities as low as 32. The evolution of the hydrologic conditions in the eastern tropical Indian Ocean since the last glacial period, when the Sunda shelf was exposed and any advection via the Sunda Strait was cutoff, and the degree to which these conditions were affected by the Sunda Strait opening are not known. Here we have analyzed two sediment cores (GeoB 10042-1 and GeoB 10043-3) collected from the eastern tropical Indian Ocean off the Sunda Strait that cover the past similar to 40,000years. We investigate the magnitude of terrigenous supply, sea surface temperature (SST), and...

Interaction between fish and fishing vessels in the Javanese purse seine fishery ArchiMer
Potier, Michel; Petitgas, Pierre; Petit, Didier.
The purse-seiners of the Java Sea use light and fish aggregating devices (FAD) to concentrate and catch small pelagic fish (Decapterus sp., Amblygaster sirm, Sardinella gibbosa). This sets a question about the interaction between fish and fishing vessels. Relevant estimates of fishing mortality and fishing effort require an understanding of this interaction. To gain information on this relationship, acoustic surveys were performed on the fishing grounds and the present paper analyses these data. Using acoustic surveys, the fish density was measured and the number of schools was counted per sea surface unit. The fishing vessels were located by radar. Acoustic data were stratified into two groups, one where fishing vessels were present and the other where...

Control of bleaching in mushroom coral populations (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) in the Java Sea: stress tolerance and interference by life history strategy Naturalis
Hoeksema, B.W..
Bleaching was studied in populations of phylogenetically closely related species (n = 21) of mushroom corals (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) around Pari Island (Java Sea) during a period of excessive seawater warming in 1983. The interspecific variation in the proportions of affected individuals was significant. Spatial variation in the degree of bleaching anlong fungiid assemblages depended much on relative species abundances. Mushroom corals In relatively stagnant water of lagoons and on the inner reef flat showed little bleaching. Many of the outer reef mushroom corals at ≤ 9 m depth were affected, but only a few at greater depths (≥15 m). In most affected fungiids, the bleached part was pale (associated with pigment loss) instead of white (assumedly caused...
