Remote sensing and zonation of seagrasses and algae along the Kenyan coast OMA
Dahdouh-Guebas, F.; Coppejans, E.; Van Speybroeck, D..
Little information has been published on space-borne remote sensing of seagrasses, and no information is available about the distribution of seagrasses and algae in East Africa. Through satellite remote sensing this study investigates the distribution of these plants along a southern section of the Kenyan coast. The visible bands (red, green and blue) and the near infra-red band of a Landsat Thematic Mapper image acquired in 1992 were combined in order to detect seagrasses and algae in 10 sectors along the section of the coast. Ground trusting was done at three locations along the same section. Results indicate that two distinct zones of vegetation can be recognised, and ground trusting reveals their identity is rocky substrate with mostly algae and...

Endoparasitic helminths of the whitespotted rabbitfish (<i>Siganus sutor</i> (Valenciennes, 1835)) of the Kenyan coast: distribution within the host population and microhabitat use OMA
Geets, A.; Ollevier, F.P..
The parasitic fauna of the alimentary tract of adult whitespotted rabbitfish, <i>Siganus sutor</i>, sampled in December 1990 at the Kenyan coast, was investigated. Five endoparasites were found: the digenean trematodes <i>Opisthogonoporoides hanumanthai, Gyliauchen papillatus</i> and <i>Hexangium sigani</i>, the acanthocephalan <i>Sclerocollum rubrimaris</i> and the nematode <i>Procammalanus elatensis</i>. No uninfected fish, nor single species infections occurred. Parasite population data showed very high prevalences for all endoparasites, ranging from 68.18% to 100%. <i>G. papillatus</i> occurred with the highest mean intensity, 201.68 ± 12.54 parasites per infected fish. The...

Kalyptorhynchia (Plathelminthes Rhabdocoela) from the Kenyan Coast, with descriptions of four new species OMA
Jouk, P.E.H.; De Vocht, A.J.-P..
Sandy sediments and algae from the littoral and sublittoral zone of the coast near Mombasa were sampled. Eighteen species of Kalyptorhynchia were collected, of which four new species of Schizorhynchia are described here, two <i>Cheliplana</i> species, one <i>Baltoplana</i> sp. and one <i>Carcharodorhynchus</i> sp. <i>Cheliplana asica terminalis</i> Brunet 1968 described from the Mediterranean and also recorded from Somalia was found as well. Five out of 13 species of Eukalyptorhynchia were already recorded from Somalia. <i>Polycystis ali</i> Schockaert 1982, <i>P. subcontorta</i> Schockaert 1982 and <i>Cinturorhynchus karlingi</i> Schockaert 1982 were newly described from...
