MORPHOMETRIC STUDY OF MENISC OF THE KNEE JOINT International Journal of Morphology
da Silva Almeida,Katiúcia Samara; Arruda de Moraes,Silvia Regina; Tashiro,Tetsuo; Neves,Elizabeth da Silveira; Toscano,Ana Elisa; Rocha de Abreu,Roseanne Maria.
We analyzed the meniscus morphometrics aspects of the knee joint as such: extern circunference tickness, the breadth, the area and distance between anterior and posterior horns, the tibial plateau correspondent area, meniscus area/tibial plateau report, check the Wrisberg's ligament length. There were analyzed 44 meniscus of the 22 knees adults men corpses. The tickness and breadth morphometrics variables were evaluated in three different points: anterior medium and posterior third part and compared values between medial and lateral compartments. In the medial meniscus weren't meaningful difference between anterior, medium and posterior third part thickness, while medium third part lateral meniscus showed such as larger thickness. When analyzed the...

Software to Browse the Pictures of Two Knees in Diverse States of Dissection, Flexion and Rotation International Journal of Morphology
Chung,Beom Sun; Park,Jin Seo; Jang,Hae Gwon; Chung,Min Suk.
The aim of this study was to produce pictures of the knees from an embalmed cadaver and another fresh cadaver with various levels of dissection, flexion, and rotation, consequently to aid medical students and doctors in studying knee anatomy. In this study, we intended to improve the accessibility of the numerous knee photographs, by entering them into our own made browsing software. This software could be downloaded for free from the website (anatomy.co.kr). In the software, a displayed array consisted of four pictures: a knee at three different depths of dissection and the same knee in flexed state. The knee could be rotated interactively at every 5° angle. Annotation of important knee structures could be seen at 90° angle intervals. With the browsing...

Posterior Slope of Tibial Plateau in Adult Nigerian Subjects International Journal of Morphology
Didia,Blessing C; Jaja,Blessing N. R.
Normal values of the tibial slope are necessary for realignment of displaced fractures of the tibia crest, repair of cruciate ligaments and correction of knee deformities. True lateral radiographs of normal knees were obtained in 119 males and 93 female Nigerian subjects. The tibial slope was then measured according to the anterior tibial cortex method. Mean angle in sampled subjects was 12.3 ± 4.90 (range: 0-240). Sex differences were statistically insignificant (p>0.05). This study provides reference values of tibial slope among indigenous adult Nigerians. It also highlights on the clinical relevance of the angle and the need to establish normal ranges in other African populations.

Medial Patellofemoral Muscle: Report of a Rare Variant International Journal of Morphology
Beddings Moreno,Ignacio; Burdiles Orellana,Álvaro; Contreras Olea,Oscar.
Muscle anatomic variants range from absence of a muscle to supernumerary muscles, with a spectrum of possibilities that include anomalous course, anomalous origin or insertion, accessory slips, and others. The most common muscle variants around the knee include aberrant origin and accessory slips of the gastrocnemius muscles, presence of tensor fascia suralis muscle, and accessory popliteus. The medial patellofemoral ligament is a distinct extra-articular condensation of fibers located superficially to the medial joint capsule. We describe the presence of an accessory medial patellofemoral muscle in the expected location of the medial patellofemoral ligament, which to our knowledge has not been described in the literature before.

Morphological Features of the Popliteus Tendon, Popliteofibular and Lateral (Fibular) Collateral Ligaments International Journal of Morphology
Kurtoglu,Zeliha; Elvan,Özlem; Aktekin,Mustafa; Çolak,Mehmet.
To reveal the detailed morphological features of the fibular collateral (fibular) ligament, popliteus tendon, popliteofibular ligament and the synovial components regarding to achieve data for surgical and biomechanical utilization. Knees of 10 formalin-fixed male cadavers were dissected bilaterally. Bursae around the lateral collateral ligament and the relation of popliteus tendon with lateral collateral ligament at the femoral attachment site were noted. The positional relation between both ends of popliteofibular ligament was evaluated statistically. The PT exceeded the anterior margin of lateral collateral ligament in 11 sides, the posterior margin of lateral collateral ligament in 3 sides and exceeded both the anterior and posterior margins of lateral...

Meniscal allograft transplantation in rabbit Anais da ABC (AABC)
VILELA,LIANA M.; CARLO,RICARDO J. DEL; Melo FILHO,EDSON V.; FAVARATO,LUKIYA S.C.; DUARTE,TATIANA S.; PONTES,KELLY C.S.; CUNHA,DAISE N.Q..
This study evaluated the technique for meniscal allograft transplantation using allografts preserved in glycerin 98% in rabbits. Euthanasia was performed at 70 days to compare the transplanted (TM1 to TM16) versus the contralateral meniscus (OM1 to OM16). Sixteen menisci, 8 transplanted and 8 contralateral, were submitted to gross examination, histomorphometric analysis for identification and quantification of cellular type, and for quantification and distribution of collagen fibers. A revascularization study was conducted in all of the other samples. Lengths of the OM varied from 0.9 to 1.0 cm and two TM were smaller. All TM were completely attached to the synovial membrane, except for one case that presented partial fixation. Both, TM and OM had similar...

Berté,L.; Mazzanti,A.; Salbego,F.Z.; Beckmann,D.V.; Santos,R.P.; Polidoro,D.; Baumhardt,R..
The study evaluated the influence of immediate physical therapy on the functional recovery of hind limbs of dogs with experimental cranial cruciate ligament rupture which underwent surgical extracapsular stabilization as well as to verify its interference in joint stability. Eight dogs were randomly divided into two groups: GI (control) (n=4) and GII (physical therapy) (n=4). The dogs in GII underwent the following therapeutic treatments in the postoperative period: cryotherapy, passive joint movement, massage, passive straightening, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, hydrotherapy (bath and aquatic mat) and therapeutic exercises. We performed evaluations of the thigh circumference, goniometry, X-ray, and knee stability (drawer test). Results did not...

Histoplasmosis diagnosed after arthroscopy of the knee: case report BJID
Falster,Lorenzo; Marin,Maurício B.; Gomes,João Luiz Ellera.
ABSTRACTFungal arthritis is a rare complication of arthroscopic surgeries, but its possibility should always be considered due its deleterious effects on any joint. Infection caused by the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum is the most common cause of respiratory tract infections by fungi, meanwhile histoplasmosis arthritis is more rare than all other fungal infections. However, their atypical forms of arthritis and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment cannot be over-emphasized. Herein we report a case of knee monoarthritis in an immunocompetent patient with histoplasmosis arthritis following an arthroscopic meniscetomy, diagnosed by synovial biopsy and culture performed during a second arthroscopic procedure. The joint was debrided in this second...

Evaluation of electromyographic activity and heart rate responses to isometric exercise. The role played by muscular mass and type BJMBR
Silva,E.; Oliveira,L.; Catai,A.M.; Ferreira-Filho,P.; Bérzin,F.; Gallo Jr.,L..
The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between the electromyographic (EMG) activity and heart rate (HR) responses induced by isometric exercise performed by knee extension (KE) and flexion (KF) in men. Fifteen healthy male subjects, 21 ± 1.3 years (mean ± SD), were submitted to KE and KF isometric exercise tests at 100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The exercises were performed with one leg (right or left) and with two legs simultaneously, for 10 s in the sitting position with the hip and knee flexed at 90o. EMG activity (root mean square values) and HR (beats/min) were recorded simultaneously both at rest and throughout the sustained contraction. The HR responses to isometric exercise in KE and KF were similar when...
