Coastline changes and sedimentation related with the opening of an artificial channel: the Valo Grande Delta, SE Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MAHIQUES,MICHEL M. DE; FIGUEIRA,RUBENS C.L.; ALVES,DANIEL P.V.; ITALIANI,DIANA M.; MARTINS,CRISTINA C.; DIAS,JOÃO M.A..
The role played by human activity in coastline changes indicates a general tendency of retreating coasts, especially deltaic environments, as a result of the recent trend of sea level rise as well as the blockage of the transfer of sediments towards the coast, especially due to the construction of dams. This is particularly important in deltaic environments which have been suffering a dramatic loss of area in the last decades. In contrast, in this paper, we report the origin and evolution of an anthropogenic delta, the Valo Grande delta, on the south-eastern Brazilian coast, whose origin is related to the opening of an artificial channel and the diversion of the main flow of the Ribeira de Iguape River. The methodology included the analysis of coastline...

Environmental and subtidal fish assemblage relationships in two different brazilian coastal estuaries BABT
Vendel,Ana Lúcia; Bouchereau,Jean-Luc; Chaves,Paulo de Tarso.
The general structure and organization of the shallow water (<1.5 m) fish assemblages were studied in two southern Brazilian ecosystems, a bay and a lagoon, under different marine or continental influences. The abiotic factors were measured to define the hydrology of the sites and the biotic descriptors were evaluated to characterize the assemblage structures. Transparency, salinity and organic matter were the abiotic factors which best distinguished the sites. A total richness of 69 species was observed. Ecological guilds, density, diversity and evenness indices values were different at each site. The hydrodynamism and geomorphology determined the structure and the organization of the fish assemblages in these shallow waters. It was observed that the...

Limnological patterns in northern pantanal lagoons BABT
Bleich,Monica Elisa; Silveira,Roberto Moraes Lima; Nogueira,Flávia Maria Barros.
The aim of this work was to correlate the limnological patterns recorded among ten lagoons in the northern part of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso with some aspects of the lagoons related to their physical and biological characteristics. Some lagoon characteristics, such as connection with the river and the presence of floating macrophytes were important to group similar lagoons into categories. Attempts were also made to determine which kind of the nutrients could be limiting phytoplankton productivity in the lagoons of the northern Pantanal. Data was collected in nine lagoons during the flooding stage in January 2004, and nutrient and chlorophyll a was followed in a tenth lagoon from June 2004 to October 2004. The phytoplankton biomass was significantly...

Spatio-temporal dynamics of a Zostera noltii dominated community over a period of fluctuating salinity in a shallow lagoon, Southern France ArchiMer
Charpentier, Aude; Grillas, P; Lescuyer, F; Coulet, E; Auby, Isabelle.
The consequences of a sudden decrease in water salinity on a macrophyte community dominated by the marine species Zostera noltii were investigated in a shallow coastal lagoon (Southern France). The expected change in the community assemblage was a competitive displacement of Z. noltii by Potamogeton pectinatus and Ruppia cirrhosa. However, the results of an eight-year survey did not validate this hypothesis. Zostera noltii remained dominant after three years at low salinity (ca. 5) and then suddenly disappeared within one year. The decline of Z. noltii was not associated with an increase of other species. The maximum depth colonized by all species decreased, suggesting that light availability became a limiting factor for the aquatic vegetation. The high...

Effects of seasonal dynamics in a Zostera noltii meadow on phosphorus and iron cycles in a tidal mudflat (Arcachon Bay, France) ArchiMer
Deborde, Jonathan; Abrill, Gwenael; Mouret, Aurelia; Jezequel, Didier; Thouzeau, Gerard; Clavier, Jacques; Bachelet, Guy; Anschutz, Pierre.
A study was conducted in Arcachon Bay, France, to determine the effect of seasonal dynamics in a Zostera noltii meadow on P and Fe cycles in the superficial sediments of a tidal mudflat. The redox-sensitive Fe particulate pool and associated P in the root zone showed a seasonal variation following the growth and decay of Z. noltii biomass, with a maximum content during the growth period. In comparison, the bare sediments did not show significant seasonal changes. A dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) uptake was measured from the water column to the sediment in vegetated sediments, whereas a net DIP efflux was observed in the unvegetated sediments. During the growth period, the formation of an iron oxihydroxide-rich zone occurred and acted as a trap for...

Lagune de Salses - Leucate. I - Analyse bibliographique. ArchiMer
Ladagnous, Helene; Le Bec, Claude.
Subjected to multiple modifications which are responsible for important disruption in the functionning of the lagoon ecosystem during the last decenies, this lagoon is one of the most important sites for the region economy. The aim of this study is to propose a knowledges synthesis utilizable for a future fitting and management water plan. In fact, many studies realized during the last years are obsolete or uncompleted to explain the present state. Hydrogeololical studies, the most important, are not completed to understand the karst-lagoon relations. The wind-driven flow in the closed bassin, must be considered to explain biogeochemical process and the sewage discharges dispersal in the lagoon. Numerical models, with new physicochemical data, appear to be...

Lagune de Salses-Leucate. III.- Variabilité de la contamination bactériologique ArchiMer
Le Bec, Claude; Carreras, Antoni; Comps, Marie-annick.
Sometimes, the monitoring network results provide an inhibited point of view to understand bacteriological process on the field. We must go further in contamination spatial or temporal structures to obtain a global picture. At Leucate, if a part of bacteriological contamination is correlated to precipitations, the main environmental factor to explain local variability seems to be the monthly variability population. This fact, completed by a spatial design, reveals a concentric gradient in the shellfish farrning area. Sorne hypothesis are discussed to explain this contamination (resurgence, aquatic birds droppings, ...)

Phytoplankton dynamics in the southern New Caledonian lagoon during a southeast trade winds event ArchiMer
Neveux, Jacques; Lefebvre, Jean-pierre; Le Gendre, Romain; Dupouy, Cecile; Gallois, Francis; Courties, Claude; Gerard, Philippe; Fernandez, Jean-michel; Ouillon, Sylvain.
During the Echolag cruise (13 February-8 March 2007), the effect of 16-30 knot trade winds on abundance, community structure and dynamics of phytoplankton was investigated in the southern part of the New Caledonian coral reefs and surrounding oceanic waters. In this area, the coral reefs form two horn-like structures (hereinafter referred to as 'horn reefs'), oriented south-east, and separated by a relatively deep valley. Three repeated samplings at one week intervals of a 32 station array showed that trade winds induce surface water cooling and significant enrichment of mid- and bottom waters above the reef shelf. This enrichment appeared as the result of a general rise of the oceanic thermocline and nitracline due to the combination of trade winds and...

Relations milieu-ressources : impact de la conchyliculture sur un environnement lagunaire méditerranéen (Thau) ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Souchu, Philippe; Mazouni, N; Juge, Claude; Dagault, Francoise.
Shellfish farming leaves its mark on the environment in which it has developed, and the men who depend upon it. These changes have altogether balanced the lagoon cycle and have caused disastrous episodic events. Increased water c1arity caused by the uptake of particulate material by shellfish farming allows seagrass to grow in deeper areas of the lagoon (down to five metres). Shellfish farming nutrient transformations increase ecosystem productivity, even if the filtration pressure keeps phytoplankton biomass at a low leveI. Storage of phosphorus and nitrogen in animal tissue limits eutrophication in this ecosystem. Transfer of oysters from growout facilities increases animal and vegetal specific diversity. The presence of large amounts of shellfish allows...

Three Dinophyceae from Clipperton Island lagoon (eastern Pacific Ocean), including a description of Peridiniopsis cristata var. tubulifera var. nov. ArchiMer
Coute, Alain; Perrette, Catherine; Chomerat, Nicolas.
Clipperton Island is a small French coral atoll in the eastern Pacific Ocean, which has been rarely investigated because of its remote location and difficult access. There is little scientific information on this ecosystem and only a few microalgae have been reported from the lagoon. To date, only one dinoflagellate taxon, Peridiniopsis cristata, is known to inhabit the lagoon. During an expedition in 2005 to study the lagoon and the surrounding oceanic waters of Clipperton Island, a further investigation of the lagoon phytoplankton was undertaken. In addition to P. cristata, which was still abundant in the upper water layer, two other thecate dinoflagellates were recorded. One dinoflagellate was identified as Durinskia baltica, while the other had the...

Contribution of climate variability to occurrences of anoxic crises 'malaigues' in the Thau lagoon (southern France) ArchiMer
Harzallah, Ali; Chapelle, Annie.
The Thau lagoon, located in southern France, suffers episodically in summer from anoxic crises known as 'malaigues'. Such crises mostly occur under warm conditions and low winds. In this paper we investigated effects of local weather conditions (air temperature, wind speed and precipitation over southern France), and two climate oscillations (the North Atlantic Oscillation and the El Ni (n) over tildeo Oscillation) on malaigue occurrences based on 33-year data series and dates when malaigues appeared. The study shows that the probability of occurrence of malaigues increases with increasing temperature and decreasing winds in August both mostly associated to the high phase of an index of North Atlantic Oscillation. Malaigues are found to be frequently...

Fish as bioindicators of brackish ecosystem health: integrating biomarker responses and target pollutant concentrations ArchiMer
Corsi, I; Mariottini, M; Sensini, C; Lancini, L; Focardi, S.
Biological responses and contaminant levels in biological tissues were investigated in fish specimens of grass goby (Zosterisessor ophiocephalus) collected in spring 2000 in a moderately polluted brackish ecosystem, the Orbetello lagoon (southern coast of Tuscany, Italy). The complexity of harmful effects that contaminants may cause in fish over time was assessed. General condition indices (somatic liver index, and gonadal somatic index), cytochrome P450 enzymes, acetylcholinesterase activity and ovarian morphology were integrated with the content of organochlorines (OCs-hexachlorobenzene, DDTs and polychlorinated biphenyls) in liver and ovaries and p-nonylphenol (NP) and lower ethoxylate (NPE(1-2)) content in muscle and ovaries as well. Samples collected...

The biogeochemistry of mercury at the sediment water interface in the Thau lagoon. 1. Partition and speciation ArchiMer
Muresan Paslaru, Bogdan; Cossa, Daniel; Jezequel, D; Prevot, F; Kerbellec, S.
Solid sediment, pore and epibenthic waters were collected from the Thau lagoon (France) in order to study the post depositional partition and mobility of mercury and monomethylmercury in an organic rich sediment. Total Hg (HgT) and monomethymercury (MMHg) profiles were produced in both dissolved and solid phases. The distribution of HgT in the solid appeared to be related to the historical changes in the Hg inputs into the lagoon. HgT was in equilibrium between solid and solution in the sulfidic part of the cores, with a mean log Kd of 4.9 +- 0.2. The solid appeared to be a source of HgT for pore water in the upper oxic to suboxic parts of the cores. The MMHg represented a small fraction of HgT: 3-15 % and 0.02-0.80 % in the dissolved and in the solid...

Does coastal lagoon habitat quality affect fish growth rate and their recruitment? Insights from fishing and acoustic surveys ArchiMer
Brehmer, Patrice; Laugier, Thierry; Kantoussan, J.; Galgani, Francois; Mouillot, D..
Ensuring the sustainability of fish resources necessitates understanding their interaction with coastal habitats, which is becoming ever more challenging in the context of ever increasing anthropogenic pressures. The ability of coastal lagoons, exposed to major sources of disturbance, to provide resources and suitable habitats for growth and survival of juvenile fish is especially important. We analysed three lagoons with different ecological statuses and habitat quality on the basis of their eutrophication and ecotoxicity (Trix test) levels. Fish abundances were sampled using fishing and horizontal beaming acoustic surveys with the same protocols in the same year. The relative abundance of Anguilla anguilla, Dicentrarchus labrax or the Mugilidae group was...

Fonctionnement hydrodynamique du bassin de Thau. Validation écologique d’un modèle numerique de circulation (programme Écothau) ArchiMer
Millet, B.
The wind-driven flow in the closed bassin de Thau is reproduced with a two-dimensional numerical model of horizontal ciruclation using an Alternate Direction Implicit scheme. A stochastic analysis of frequencies on a yearly time scale of the velocity fields computed in the model and a spatial and stochastic treatment of the term (H2 y2), similar to an effective coefficient of horizontal dispersion by shear effect are presented. This approach will allow the delineation, in a stochastic manner, of the main structures of the circulation in the lagoon and the spatial heterogeneity of its ecohydrodynamic features. Two attempts of analogical research are presented, with sorne examples of the spatial structure in the phytoplankton biomass and the map of the...

This study presents a specifically designed Mercury module in a coupled benthic-pelagic reactive-transport model - Bottom RedOx Model (BROM) that allows to study mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry under different conditions. This module considers the transformation of elemental mercury (Hg(0)), divalent mercury (Hg(II)) and methylmercury (MeHg). The behavior of mercury species in the model is interconnected with changes of oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, iron oxides, organic matter, and biota. We simulated the transformation and transport of Hg species in the water column and upper sediment layer under five different scenarios, combining various levels of oxygenation and trophic state in the Berre lagoon, a shallow eutrophic lagoon of the French Mediterranean coast...

Analyse des captures des pêcheries marines et lagunaires d'Egypte en liaison avec la construction du haut barrage d'Assouan ArchiMer
Bebars, Mi; Lasserre, G; Hoai, Tl.
Annually exploited communities from the Nile delta and two nearby lagoons (Manzalah and Edkou) were monitored from 1962 to 1989. The changes in community structure were analysed as a function of two events: fishing pressure growth (motorized fishing vessels) which increased by a factor of 19 between 1952 and 1962; and the construction of the Aswan Dam, which was built between 1965 and 1969, reducing the flow of the Nile by 90 %. Before the construction of the dam, increased sea fishing pressure led to a decline in landings from 33,832 tons in 1962 to 8,522 tons in 1969, but with no structural change in the exploited community. However, following completion of the dam in 1969, the community structure changed and a significant correlation was detected...

Seasonal succession of cyanoprokaryotes in a hypereutrophic oligo-mesohaline lagoon from the South of France ArchiMer
Chomerat, Nicolas; Garnier, Robert; Bertrand, Céline; Cazaubon, Arlette.
The Bolmon lagoon (South of France) is an oligo-mesohaline coastal lagoon that has undergone intense eutrophication in the past decades, resulting from a strong concentration of human activities in its drainage basin. Consequently, it exhibits some characteristics typical of an advanced trophic state; namely, the disappearance of submerged vegetation, the permanently intense phytoplankton growth and the recurrence of cyanoprokaryote blooms. As cyanoprokaryote dominance in south-temperate saline lagoons is little reported, we carried out this study in order to understand the seasonal variations in the phytoplankton composition and biomass, and to analyse the influence of environmental parameters such as salinity, nutrients and climate on the seasonal...
