ABSTRACT High-resolution satellite images, digital elevation models, bathymetric and sedimentological surveys coupled with statistical analysis were used to understand the physical environment and discuss their influence on water quality of the five upland lakes of Serra Sul dos Carajás, southeast Amazonia. The lakes have mid-altitude ranges (elevation), very small (catchment) and shallow to very shallow (central basins). Based on the length, area and volume, Violão and TI (Três Irmãs)-3 lakes may present large vertical movements of the water due to wind action and weakly stratified waters. Abstract: Field surveys and integral modelling were carried out to study the effect of bubble plumes on the flow hydrodynamics and the time-evolution of water temperature profiles in a shallow lake with maximum depth of about 4 m. Then, model simulations were performed to verify the feasibility of destratification of ten water-supply reservoirs with capacities of 10-2,000 hm3. Finally, hydrological modelling was conducted to assess the impact of destratification on evaporation suppression and its effects on reservoir yield. The results indicate that net temperature reductions of the order of 1.0°C can be obtained, which corresponds to evaporation suppressions of approximately 10%. Este trabalho analisa a dinâmica do chumbo no lago do parque do Ingá, Maringá - PR. Mensalmente durante um ano foram coletadas amostras de água e sedimentos e o pH e temperatura medidos no ato da coleta. Nas amostras de água foi determinada a Demanda Química de Oxigênio (DQO) e a concentração total de Pb na água e sedimentos. A determinação da concentração Pb na água e sedimentos foi feita com a técnica da espectrometria da absorção atômica, modalidade chama. Revealing the adaptive responses of ecological, social, and economic systems to a transforming biosphere is crucial for understanding system resilience and preventing collapse. However, testing the theory that underpins complex adaptive system organization (e.g., panarchy theory) is challenging. We used multivariate time series modeling to identify scale-specific system organization and, by extension, apparent resilience mechanisms. Agricultural watersheds are affected by changes in climate, land use, agricultural practices, and human demand for energy, food, and water resources. In this context, we analyzed the agricultural, urbanizing Yahara watershed (size: 1345 km², population: 372,000) to assess its responses to multiple changing drivers. We measured recent trends in land use/cover and water quality of the watershed, spatial patterns of 10 ecosystem services, and spatial patterns and nestedness of governance. The lakes in the northern highlands of Wisconsin, USA, the lakes and wetlands of Kristianstads Vattenrike in southern Sweden, and the Everglades of Florida, USA, provide cases that can be used to compare the linkages between ecological resilience and social dynamics. The erosion of ecological resilience in aquatic and wetland ecosystems is often a result of past management actions and is manifest as a real or perceived ecological crisis. Learning is a key ingredient in response to the loss of ecological resilience. Learning is facilitated through networks that operate in distinct arenas and are structured for dialogue, synthesis, and imaginative solutions to chart alternative futures. ABSTRACT White Star (Nymphoides humboldtiana), an aquatic-environmental native species of Brazilian flora, was selected in order to be used as ornamental plant in lakes. Studies on the ecology of Lake Sare (Kenya) were carried out to provide baseline information on the ecological conditions before a major wetland reclamation project was started upstream of the lake. Results indicated that maximum depth had decreased by 0.9 m while Secchi depth readings had decreased by 0.1 m compared to historical values. This implies that the lake was undergoing siltation. pH values had increased from 6.80 to 7.58 reflecting increased primary production. Conductivity had increased from 106 – 137 2 ~kS/cm. La Patagonia de Chile posee muchos ecosistemas acuáticos sin contaminación, dentro de estos ecosistemas hay muchos lagos y lagunas prístinos. En este estudio, se analizó información colectada entre los años 1989 y 1990 (sin publicar y sin publicar) sobre lagos y lagunas del Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, un área sin contaminar en el sur de Chile (51° S). Se aplicó un análisis de componentes principales considerando parámetros químicos, riqueza de especies zooplanctónicas y biomasa. We present a bioeconomic model of three invasive aquatic plants (hydrilla, water hyacinth, and water lettuce) in 13 large Florida lakes, and simulate one-year and steady-state impacts of three control scenarios. We estimate that the steady-state annual net benefit of invasive plant control is $59.95 million. A one-year increase in control yields steady-state gains of $6.55 million per year, and a one-year lapse causes steady-state annual losses of $18.71 million. This model shows that increased control of hydrilla, water hyacinth, and water lettuce is optimal. |

Fee-fishing operations developed recently in Brazilian agricultural scenery in a rather disordered manner. This study, carried out at the northwest region of São Paulo State, Brazil, focuses on the productive performance of fee-fishing system. Several visits were made monthly to nine fee-fishing establishments, for six months. A questionnaire by owners targeting 13 indicators of the operation's productive performance.
