The recent collapse in the landings of cockles (Cerastoderma edule) from the Bay of Somme (France) required to investigate if a change in the environmental factors was liable for the drop of the bivalve populations. This project has led to a preliminary assessment of the situation and has been drawn up from the data collected by the Groupe d'Etude des Milieux Estuariens et Littoraux since 1978. It relies on the survey of the spatio-temporal changes of bio-facies. it is suggested that the impact of changes in sediment characteristics is important as well as competition with species as Pygospio elegans (Polychaeta). The above parameters are assessed as essential in the fluctuations of the cockle numbers but they do not explain entirely the collapse in the... |

(1). During 2002 an estimated total of 4915 tonnes of fish was landed on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue by 374 fishing boats. 83.1% of the total catch was landed on Mahe alone. The total catch increased by 625 tonnes compared to 2001, and the number of boats operating decreased by 3 over the same period. (2). The most important species groups landed (greater than 5% of the total catch) were carangues (41.5%), job (12.4%), capitaine (6.8%), becune (6.1%), maquereau doux (5.7%) and bourgeois (5.7%). (3). Peak landings occurred in October (576.5 MT) and the lowest catch was recorded in January (222.51 MT). The average catch per month was 409.6 tonnes. (4). Seasonal variation in catches of demersal species was less marked compared to previous years. The mean... |

Red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) fishery. Analysis of catches, nominal effort and landings structure in 2011. A descriptive analysis of red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) fishery within the Buenos Aires Coastal Ecosystem (BCE) and the Argentine continental shelf, between 34° S and 42° S, during 2011 was performed. The catches landed, of a total of 3,627 t, performed in a direct and incidental way by an heterogeneous fleet of 149 vessels belonging to five strata (Ia, Ib, Ic, IIa and IIb) in 1,527 fishing trips represented a 36.7% decrease as regards 2010. The spatiotemporal analysis allowed to determine that the highest yields of the species were obtained close to 50 m depth, that coincides with the highest surface temperatures in the area, that decrease in a... |

(1). During 2003 a total of 3,852 Metric Tonnes (MT) of fish was landed on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue by 405 fishing boats. 80.5% of the total catch was landed on Mahe alone. The total artisanal catch decreased by 1063 (MT) compared to 2002, whilst the number of boats operating increased by 31 over the same period (excluding sport fishing vessels). (2). The most important species groups landed (greater than 5% of the total catch) were carangues (33.6%), job (15.8%), bourgeois (9.1%), cordonier (6.6%), capitaine (6.1%), becune (6.0%), and maquereau doux (5.4%). Compared to 2002, there were notable increases in the relative importance of cordonier and bourgeois to the overall catch. (3). Peak landings occurred in November (463.7 MT) and the lowest catch was... |

Peak landings occurred in April (549.7 MT) and the lowest catch occurred in July (211.8 MT). The average catch per month was 375.8 tonnes. (4). A marked seasonal variation in catches of demersal species was observed, with low catches being recorded during the period of south east trade... |

Fishery statistics of austral demersal fishes in the Southwest Atlantic (1980-2002 period). A synthesis of the information available about catches of austral demersal fishes and fishing efforts reported by different fleets that operated in the SW Atlantic between 34° S-58° S in the 1980-2002 period is made. Species included in the analysis were southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis), patagonian hoki (Macruronus magellanicus), patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides), red cod (Salilota australis), southern hake (Merluccius australis) and ling (Genypterus blacodes). Annual and monthly catches, fishing grounds, number of vessels that participated in the fisheries, main landing ports and other characteristic of interest are presented. When it... |
