Ways of farming and ways of thinking: do farmers’ mental models of the landscape relate to their land management practices? Ecology and Society
The efficiency of the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy in mitigating the negative effects of agricultural intensification on the landscape and biodiversity is increasingly being questioned. Enhancing a reciprocal understanding of various stakeholders’ mental models of agro-social-ecosystems has been proposed to trigger changes in both policy design and farmers’ behaviors. However, the relationship between farmers’ mental models and practices is rarely considered. Here, we explore the relationship between farmers’ individual mental models (IMMs) of the agricultural landscape and their land management practices. To do so, we developed a theoretical and methodological framework grounded in cognitive...

Sustaining ecosystem services in cultural landscapes Ecology and Society
van der Horst, Dan; University of Edinburgh; dan.vanderhorst@ed.ac.uk; Bieling, Claudia; University of Freiburg; claudia.bieling@landespflege.uni-freiburg.de.
Classical conservation approaches focus on the man-made degradation of ecosystems and tend to neglect the social-ecological values that human land uses have imprinted on many environments. Throughout the world, ingenious land-use practices have generated unique cultural landscapes, but these are under pressure from agricultural intensification, land abandonment, and urbanization. In recent years, the cultural landscapes concept has been broadly adopted in science, policy, and management. The interest in both outstanding and vernacular landscapes finds expression in the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, the European Landscape Convention, and the IUCN Protected Landscape Approach. These policies promote the protection, management, planning, and governance of...

Population structure and fruit availability of the babassu palm ( Attalea speciosa Mart. ex Spreng) in human-dominated landscapes of the Northeast Region of Brazil Acta Botanica
Campos,Juliana Loureiro Almeida; Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino; Peroni,Nivaldo; Araújo,Elcida de Lima.
ABSTRACT We studied the population structure and fruit availability of the babassu palm, Attalea speciosa, in three human-dominated landscapes located near a rural community in the region of Araripe, in the Northeast Region of Brazil, that were under intense fruit harvest. Fifty 10 x 10 m plots were randomly established in each of the three landscapes, and all individuals of A. speciosa within the plots were classified as seedlings, juveniles or adults, with the height of all adult individuals being measured. An additional 20 individuals were marked in each landscape, and the number of total bunches, fruits per bunch and bunches per palm tree were recorded. The populations of A. speciosa in the three landscapes exhibited an inverted J-shape plot, but...

L. Vera, R. Montalba, L. Vieli, E. Jorquera, and I González. 2015. Methodology for determining the suitability of land for the cultivation of highbush blueberry: a case study on a farm in southern Chile. Cien. Inv. Agr. 42(3): 353-364. The selection of good planting sites is critical for the success of blueberry plantations. The objective of the present study was to identify farm territorial units suitable for the establishment and management of highbush blueberry crops on a farm in southern Chile. A farm-level characterization was developed, and districts and sites were classified according to their receptive capacity. Numerical suitability valúes were subsequently obtained for each land unit identified on the farm. Four suitability categories were...
