Late Holocene multisource material input into the Aegean Sea: depositional and post-depositional processes ArchiMer
Giresse, P; Buscail, R; Charriere, B.
The upper similar to50 cm sediments in the deep-sea Aegean Sea were generally deposited through hemipelagic rain as indicated by paucity of terrigenous sand-sized particles, abundance of clay-sized materials and lack of turbiditic beds. However, quartz sand-sized grains, black debris, higher C org content and ON ratio attest to a significant river-borne supply in the North Aegean Trough. Recurrent gravity-induced transfers from the shelf break are evidenced through various markers of coastal deposition dating back the last low-stand (Characea oogons, Elphidium crispum, Ammonia beccarii, glauconitic grains, evolved organic matter). Especially, this deposition induced significant rise of the C/N ratio of successive layers. The top of ash layers of the Minoan...

Analysis of Holocene sedimentary features on the Adriatic shelf from 3D very high resolution seismic data (Triad survey) ArchiMer
Marsset, Tania; Marsset, Bruno; Thomas, Yannick; Cattaneo, Antonio; Thereau, Estelle; Trincardi, F; Cochonat, Pierre.
Very High Resolution (VHR) 3D seismic data were collected on the Adriatic shelf offshore the city of Ortona in order to define the small-scale geometric complexity of late Holocene deposits. Three groups of units are distinguished from the bottom up: (1) units U1 to U3 forming the Transgressive System Tract (TST); (2) units U4 and U5 representing the condensed interval deposited on the Maximum flooding surface (MFS) and the basal unit of the High stand System Tract (HST); and (3) U6 to U 10 forming the progradational units of the HST. The muddy HST deposits show seafloor and subsurface sedimentary features over up to 40% of its extent on the Adriatic shelf. In the area offshore Ortona, the HST shows shore-parallel undulations in water depth of ca. 30-70 m...

Le comblement de la ria de Gernika (golfe de Gascogne) à l'Holocène terminal ArchiMer
Pascual, A; Weber, O; Rodriguez-lazaro, J; Jouanneau, Jm; Pujos, M.
A study of the recent sedimentation of the ria de Gernika (Bay of Biscay) is undertaken to characterise different steps of its Holocene filling. Sedimentological and micropalaeontological analysis of six cores sampled in the ria, completed with absolute dating (C-14, and based upon Pb-210 exc.), allow us to identify three phases in the filling of the ria that are Limited by two transgressive shifts (3500 and 2500 yr. B.P.) already described in other areas of the Bay of Biscay. In the first phase, lithologies as well as benthic foraminifera and ostracode assemblages are typical of coastal marine palaeo-environment. During the second phase the euryhaline waters progessively occupy the central area of the estuary. Here the presence of allochthonous...

Vegetational changes during the last millennium inferred from a palynological record from the Bananal Island, Tocantins, Brazil Acta Amazonica
MENDES,Laís Aguiar da Silveira; PIRES,Etiene Fabbrin; MENESES,Maria Ecilene Nunes da Silva; BEHLING,Hermann.
The Bananal Island is regarded the largest fluvial island in the world, bounded by Araguaia and Javaés rivers, being located in southwest of Tocantins. The objectives of this work were to provide information about the vegetational changes that occurred at the Bananal Island, in order to contribute to the understanding the dynamics of past and current savanna and areas of ecotones with forests. Thus, a sedimentary core collected from a small lake at the Bananal Island plain was submitted to pollen and radiocarbon dating analyses. The results showed that the last millennium was dominated by forest reflecting a wet climate. At the beginning of the record (920-770 yr cal BP) the wet climate and high rainfall produced flooding during long rainy seasons that...

Reconstruction of the Late Pleistocene to Late Holocene vegetation transition using packrat midden and pollen evidence from the Central Mojave Desert Acta Botanica
Balmaki,Behnaz; Wigand,Peter E..
ABSTRACT The Mojave Desert of the American West is characterized by plant species that reflect a unique mixture of winter precipitation and summer monsoon climate. Currently, the Mojave Desert experiences a strong summer monsoonal pattern with weak winter precipitation. Data from pollen and packrat midden analyses have revealed a history of Mojave Desert vegetation during the transition from the late Pleistocene to late Holocene (~17500 Cal. years B.P. to ~ 1200 Cal. years B.P.) that highlight a summer dominated monsoonal pattern, similar to those in the greater American Southwest. We compare pollen data from a lava tube in the Cima volcanic field, located in south-central region of the Mojave Desert, with plant macrofossil data from several woodrat midden...

Environmental changes during the last millennium based on multi-proxy palaeoecological records in a savanna-forest mosaic from the northernmost Brazilian Amazon region Anais da ABC (AABC)
MENESES,MARIA ECILENE N.S.; COSTA,MARCONDES L.; ENTERS,DIRK; BEHLING,HERMANN.
ABSTRACTThe environmental changes and the dynamics of the savanna-forest mosaic, over the last 1050 years, have been reconstructed by pollen, charcoal, radiocarbon dating mineralogical and geochemical analyses of sediment cores taken from three different Mauritia flexuosapalm swamps in the northernmost part of the Brazilian Amazon region (northern state of Roraima). Studies on the relationship between the modern pollen rain and the regional vegetation provide additional information for the interpretation of the fossil pollen records. The fossil pollen assemblages and geochemical results indicate relatively wet climatic conditions throughout the recorded period. Despite these moist conditions, fires were frequent and are one of the reasons for the dominance...

Palynological analysis of a late Holocene core from Santo Antônio da Patrulha, Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Macedo,Renato B.; Souza,Paulo A.; Bauermann,Soraia G.; Bordignon,Sérgio A.L..
A sedimentar core collected at Santo Antônio da Patrulha, Rio Grande do Sul State, southmost Brazil, was submitted to pollen analysis to provide the vegetational history of this region, and the paleoecological and paleoclimatic changes. A total of 98 taxa of palynomorphs was identified from 35 subsamples. Three radiocarbonic datings were obtained along a section of 115 cm depth, including the basal age of 4730 ± 50 yr BP. Pollen diagrams and cluster analysis were performed based on palynomorphs frequencies, demonstrating five distinct phases (SAP-I to SAP-V), which reflected different paleoecological conditions. The predominance of plants associated with grasslands in the phase SAP-I suggests warm and dry climate conditions. A gradual increasing of...

Late Holocene Vegetation History and Early Evidence of Araucaria angustifolia in Caçapava do Sul in the Lowland Region of Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil BABT
Behling,Hermann; Verissimo,Nuno; Bauermann,Soraia; Bordignon,Sergio; Evaldt,Andreia.
Little is known about the southernmost occurrence of small areas with Araucaria angustifolia populations in Caçapava do Sul in low elevated areas of Rio Grande do Sul State, about 130 km to the south of to the highlands of southern Brazil where the main distribution of Araucaria is found. This occurrence is about 130 km further south to the main area of Araucaria angustifolia which is on the highlands in southern Brazil. The question is whether this occurrence is natural, due to indigenous peoples, or due to plantation by post-Columbian settlers. To trace the origin of this little known southernmost existence of Araucaria angustifolia trees is of particular interest for conservation issues. To address this question we did a vegetation survey and studied a...
