Storage Period Affects Weight Loss of Japanese Quail Eggs Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Roriz,BC; Sgavioli,S; Garcia,RG; Nääs,IA; Domingues,CHF; Caldara,FR; Rombola,LG; Ayla,CM; Bernnecke,K.
ABSTRACT Long storage periods may increase embryo mortality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of storage period on the weight loss, eggshell surface temperature, hatchability, and embryonic mortality of Japanese quail eggs. Two hundred fertile eggs were collected from a flock of 30-week-old Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The eggs were collected for 10 consecutive days after lay, and immediately incubated. A completely randomized experimental design with 10 treatments, corresponding to the number of days eggs were stored between egg collection and setting, with 20 replicates each, was applied. Egg weight loss increased with storage period duration, starting on day 6 (2.1%, on average) and reached 3.26%, on average, in...

Effect of inoculation route on the production of antibodies and histological characteristics of the spleen in laying hens Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Eto,SF; Andrade,FG; Pinheiro,JW; Balarin,MR; Ramos,SP; Venancio,EJ.
Recent studies have reported the use of IgY antibody in the prevention or treatment of diseases in animals. IgY can be obtained in large amounts from the yolk of chicken eggs through a low-cost process. This study evaluated the effect of different routes of inoculation on antibody production and spleen morphological characteristics of laying hens (White Leghorn) inoculated with sheep red blood cells. The analysis of the results showed that the intramuscular route is the most efficient for total antibody production in the primary immune response, while the intravenous route is the most efficient in producing IgY antibodies in the secondary immune response. No histological changes were observed in the spleen of laying hens. This study could be useful for...

Lipid Sources in Diets for Hy-Line White Laying: Performance, Biometrics of Digestive Organs, and Bone Characteristics Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Moura,CP; Leite,SCB; Nogueira,APA; Farias,MRS; Abreu,CG; Sena,TL; Freitas,ER.
ABSTRACT Dietary inclusion of lipid sources has been one of the methods adopted by nutritionists aiming at better energy balancing. However, alternative energy feedstuffs have been sought in an attempt to reduce production costs. In this regard, lipid sources that can replace conventional ones, such as beef tallow, cottonseed oil, and sunflower oil have been investigated. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of different lipid sources on the performance, egg quality, biometrics of digestive organs, and bone quality of white-egg commercial layers in the first production cycle. A total of 216 Hy-Line White layers at 70 weeks of age, weighing 1.701 ± 0.103 kg, were used in a completely randomized design with four treatments and six...

Organic minerals with different chemical characteristics in diets for Hy-Line White laying hens: performance, biometry of digestive organs, and bone quality R. Bras. Zootec.
Farias,Maria Rogervânia Silva de; Bastos-Leite,Silvana Cavalcante; Moura,Constância Pontes; Costa,Adailton Camêlo; Abreu,Cláudia Goulart de; Sena,Thaís Lucas de.
ABSTRACT Two trials were carried out to evaluate the effect of groups of organic minerals with different chemical characteristics on the performance, egg quality, biometry of digestive organs, and bone quality of laying hens in the first and second laying cycles. In the first cycle, 180 layers at 72 weeks were used in a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments and five replicates with nine birds each. In the second cycle, 216 layers at 94 weeks of age were used in a CRD with four treatments and six replicates with nine birds each. Birds were fed the following diets: treatment 1 - basal diet (inorganic minerals); treatment 2 - basal diet + amino acid chelated minerals (Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) + selenium yeast; treatment 3 - basal diet +...

Menezes,Pasquoal Carrazzoni de; Lima,Evilda Rodrigues de; Medeiros,Juliana Pinto de; Oliveira,Wanessa Noadya Ketruy de; Evêncio-Neto,Joaquim.
The objective of this research was to evaluate the quality of eggs from Dekalb White hens under different temperatures (room temperature, 25 ºC; and refrigeration, 8 ºC), storage times (7, 14 and 21 days), age of birds (35, 40, 45 and 50 weeks) and housing densities (625, 500, 416.6 and 357.14 cm²/birds). Haugh unit (HU) values and albumen height of 1,120 eggs from 528 laying hens, randomly allocated to four groups with different population densities were evaluated. The results showed a significant effect on Haugh units, between the time and storage conditions and between the ages of laying hens and storage condition. Eggs stored in refrigeration showed less weight loss and better Haugh unit indices when compared with eggs stored at room temperature. The...

Ovarian radiographic and direct measurements of Japanese Quail ( Coturnix coturnix japonica ) submitted to light restriction Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Albuquerque,M.; Guedes,R.; Dornbusch,P.; Laskoski,L.; Mangini,P.; Lange,R..
ABSTRACT Often, in pet birds, any stimulus to lay eggs is unwanted in order to reduce reproductive diseases and disorders. The objectives of this study were: to determine the time necessary to promote ovary involution after an eight hour photoperiod using laying Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica); to connect the ovarian radiographic measurements with egg production; and to compare these measurements with direct ovary data obtained at necropsy. Birds were separated into three groups: 12h/24d (control group - 12h photoperiod for 24 days), 8h/24d and 8h/36d (8h photoperiod for 24 and 36 days). After euthanasia, all cadavers were x-rayed to measure ovary length and height. Birds were necropsied to measure ovarian length and weight. Results:...
