Growth dynamics and yield of melon as influenced by nitrogen fertilizer Scientia Agricola
Castellanos,María Teresa; Cabello,María Jesús; Cartagena,María del Carmen; Tarquis,Ana María; Arce,Augusto; Ribas,Francisco.
Nitrogen (N) is an important nutrient for melon (Cucumis melo L.) production. However there is scanty information about the amount necessary to maintain an appropriate balance between growth and yield. Melon vegetative organs must develop sufficiently to intercept light and accumulate water and nutrients but it is also important to obtain a large reproductive-vegetative dry weight ratio to maximize the fruit yield. We evaluated the influence of different N amounts on the growth, production of dry matter and fruit yield of a melon 'Piel de sapo' type. A three-year field experiment was carried out from May to September. Melons were subjected to an irrigation depth of 100% crop evapotranspiration and to 11 N fertilization rates, ranging 11 to 393 kg ha-1 in...

Estimating foliar nitrogen in Eucalyptus using vegetation indexes Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Luiz Felipe Ramalho de; Oliveira,Marcio Leles Romarco de; Gomes,Francisco Sérgio; Santana,Reynaldo Campos.
ABSTRACT Nitrogen (N) has commonly been applied in Eucalyptus stands in Brazil and it has a direct relation with biomass production and chlorophyll content. Foliar N concentrations are used to diagnose soil and plant fertility levels and to develop N fertilizer application rates. Normally, foliar N is obtained using destructive methods, but indirect analyses using Vegetation Indexes (VIs) may be possible. The aim of this work was to evaluate VIs to estimate foliar N concentration in three Eucalyptus clones. Lower crown leaves of three clonal Eucalyptus plantations (25 months old) were classified into five color patterns using the Munsell Plant Tissue Color Chart. For each color, N concentration was determined by the Kjeldahl method and foliar reflectance...

Evaluation of fertilization with uncoated urea and 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP)-coated urea on nitrogen leaching and rose (Rosa spp.) yield Chilean J. Agric. Res.
García-Castro,Alexandra; Restrepo-Díaz,Hermann.
The negative impact of N over-fertilization has acquired importance in rose (Rosa spp.) growers in Colombia. The nitrification inhibitor 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) has been considered a valuable alternative to diminish the N losses by leaching and to enable more efficient N use efficiency in crops. The objective of the present work was to study the effect of DMPP on the mineral N (NH4+- N and NO3--N) content in soil and water leaching, and physiological characteristics of rose plants. A greenhouse experiment was performed for 10 wk. Four-year-old 'Charlotte' rose cultivars grafted on 'Natal Briar' were grown in soil and fertirrigated daily with a complete nutrient solution containing 170 mg N L-1. Two N fertilizers (uncoated urea [UA], and urea...
