PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES OF COFFEE TREE UNDER DIFFERENT IRRIGATION LEVELS REA
Costa,Jéfferson de O.; Coelho,Rubens D.; Barros,Timóteo H. da S.; Fraga Júnior,Eusímio F.; Fernandes,André L. T..
ABSTRACT The plant water potential and the leaf temperature are physiological responses of the coffee tree that can be used as indicative of the irrigation management of this crop. There is a dependence between the leaf water potential with the potential matrix of the soil solution, however, the water potential levels found for the coffee tree show divergent relationships in the literature regarding the matrix potential. The objective of this study is to verify the water potential and leaf surface temperature in the coffee tree when submitted to different irrigation levels. The study was conducted in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, using Coffea arabica species from Red Catuaí IAC 144 variety, the drip irrigation system was adopted and the management done by...

Schmidt,Denise; Caron,Braulio O; Schwerz,Luciano; Manfron,Paulo A; Elli,Elvis F; Schwerz,Felipe.
ABSTRACT We aimed to determine the response of cidró (Aloysia triphylla) submitted to different water replacement levels in summer and winter, in order to understand and relate the plant physiological performance under adverse weather conditions. The research was developed in a protected environment, in the city of Frederico Westphalen, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, arranged in a 2x4x2 factorial scheme, two seasons of the year (summer and winter), four water availability (50, 75, 100, 125% of ETo) and two faces of leaf (abaxial and adaxial), with four replications. There were evaluated stomatal vapor diffusion resistance (s/cm), transpiration (µg/cm2/s) and leaf temperature (°C), on both faces of the...

Martins,Amanda Posselt; Costa,Sérgio Ely Valadão Gigante de Andrade; Anghinoni,Ibanor; Kunrath,Taise Robinson; Cecagno,Diego; Reichert,José Miguel; Balerini,Fabrício; Dillenburg,Lúcia Rebello; Carvalho,Paulo César de Faccio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of grazing intensities after 11 years of an integrated crop-livestock system, under no-tillage, on soil moisture and soybean physiological parameters during a summer season affected by drought. The experiment was established in 2001 on a Rhodic Hapludox. Treatments consisted in the succession of soybean (summer) and a mixed pasture of black oat + Italian ryegrass (winter), under different beef-cattle grazing intensities: intensive grazing, with 0.10-m pasture height; moderate grazing, with 0.20-m pasture height; and no grazing. During the soybean cycle, in the 2011/2012 crop season, rainfall was 40% of the climatological normal. The soil moisture was within the limits of available water both...

Physiological parameters to select upland rice genotypes for tolerance to water deficit PAB
Guimarães,Cleber Morais; Stone,Luís Fernando; Castro,Adriano Pereira de; Morais Júnior,Odilon Peixoto de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of using physiological parameters for water deficit tolerance, as an auxiliary method for selection of upland rice genotypes. Two experiments - with or without water deficit - were carried out in Porangatu, in the state of Goiás, Brazil; the water deficit experiment received about half of irrigation that was applied to the well-watered experiment. Four genotypes with different tolerance levels to water stress were evaluated. The UPLRI 7, B6144F-MR-6-0-0, and IR80312-6-B-3-2-B genotypes, under water stress conditions, during the day, showed lower stomatal diffusive resistance, higher leaf water potential, and lower leaf temperature than the control. These genotypes showed the highest grain...

Tolerance of upland rice genotypes to water deficit AGRIAMBI
Guimarães,Cleber M.; Stone,Luís F.; Rangel,Paulo H. N.; Silva,Ana C. de L..
Water deficit is one of the environmental factors that cause a great reduction in the upland rice grain yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate genotypes of upland rice with broad genetic diversity for tolerance to this stress and to identify secondary traits for evaluation of this tolerance. Sixty-four genotypes were evaluated during two years at the Experiment Station of EMATER, in Porangatu, GO, under well-watered and water deficit conditions. The genotypes showed differences in grain yield and were influenced differently by the water treatments, both under a mild water deficit in the first year and under a severe one in the second year. The genotype grain yield under water deficiency was significantly and positively correlated with tiller...

Water stress indices for the sugarcane crop on different irrigated surfaces AGRIAMBI
Brunini,Rodrigo G.; Turco,José E. P..
ABSTRACT Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is a crop of vital importance to Brazil, in the production of sugar and ethanol, power generation and raw materials for various purposes. Strategic information such as topography and canopy temperature can provide management technologies accessible to farmers. The objective of this study was to determine water stress indices for sugarcane in irrigated areas, with different exposures and slopes. The daily water stress index of the plants and the water potential in the soil were evaluated and the production system was analyzed. The experiment was carried out in an “Experimental Watershed”, using six surfaces, two horizontal and the other ones with 20 and 40% North and South exposure slopes. Water stress level was...

Influence of mechanical root restriction on gas-exchange of four papaya genotypes Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
CAMPOSTRINI,ELIEMAR; YAMANISHI,OSVALDO KIYOSHI.
Four papaya genotypes, two from the ‘Solo’ group (Sunrise Solo TJ and Improved Sunrise Solo line 72/12) and two from the ‘Formosa’ group (Tainung 02 and Know You 01) grown in ultisol under field conditions in Macaé, RJ, Brazil, were used in this study. Two different effective depths (ED) were determined in the area using a penetrographer with average soil moisture of 11.2%. The area with ED of 0.35 m with a maximum pressure of 4.12 MPa for penetration was defined as an area with restriction (WR) to root growth, while, the area with minimum ED of 0.60 m and a pressure lower than 2.30 MPa as an area with no restriction (NR). The net CO2 assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance (g s), leaf temperature (Tl), intercellular partial pressure of CO2 (c i) and...

Morpho-physiological characteristics by sweet potato cultivars as function of irrigation depth Anais da ABC (AABC)
DELAZARI,FÁBIO T.; ASSIS,IGOR R.; CABRERA,DIEGO F.V.; FERREIRA,MARIANE G.; DIAS,LUIZ E.; RUEDA,ANGELICA; ZANUNCIO,JOSÉ C.; SILVA,DERLY J.H..
Abstract The sweet potato is an alternative energy source, but its sustainability depends on efficient water use. The objective of this study was to evaluate sweet potato morpho-physiological characteristics, and water use efficiency (WUE). Irrigation depths of 50, 75, 100, and 125% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) were applied. The morpho-physiological indicators, WUE, leaf area index (LAI), leaf water potential, leaf temperature, and leaf chlorophyll index (ICF), were evaluated. The WUE of the sweet potato cultivars increased until the 75% water depth of the ETc. The LAI of these cultivars increased with irrigation depth, with higher values at 100% of the ETc. The leaf water potential of the two sweet potato cultivars was lowest with the lower irrigation...

Leaf vein density and photosynthetic rate in Rosa: Is there a correlation? Boletín de la Sociedad
Pagano,Mario; Storchi,Paolo.
A thorough knowledge of the leaf vascular network and its evolution is essential for understanding the fluid dynamics of water movement in leaves. Recent studies have shown how these networks can be involved in the performance of photosynthesis, which is linked to the density of the vascular network per unit of leaf area. The aim of this study is to highlight the correlation between leaf vein density (VD) and physiological parameters. The hypothesis proposed was tested on the leaves of the "Isabel Renaissance" (IR) rose cultivar. The main result concerned the VD, which was significantly correlated with the maximum leaf net photosynthetic rate (PN). This finding supports the hypothesis that the vascular system of IR leaves can be correlated with leaf...

Use of physiological parameters as fast tools to screen for drought tolerance in sugarcane Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Silva,Marcelo de A.; Jifon,John L.; Silva,Jorge A.G. da; Sharma,Vivek.
Drought is one of the major limitations to plant productivity worldwide. Identifying suitable screening tools and quantifiable traits would facilitate the crop improvement process for drought tolerance. In the present study, we evaluated the ability of four relatively physiological parameters (variable-to-maximum chlorophyll a fluorescence ratio, F v/F m; estimated leaf chlorophyll content via SPAD index; leaf temperature, LT; and, leaf relative water content, RWC) to distinguish between drought tolerant and susceptible sugarcane genotypes subjected to a 90-d drought cycle. Eight field-grown genotypes were studied. By 45 d after the onset of treatments, the F v/F m, SPAD index and RWC of drought-stressed plants had declined significantly in all genotypes...

Leaf heliotropism in Styrax camporum Pohl from the Brazilian cerrado: distinct gas exchange and leaf structure, but similar leaf temperature and water relations Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Habermann,Gustavo; Machado,Silvia R.; Guimarães,Vandeir F.; Rodrigues,João D..
Styrax camporum is a common shrub species from the cerrado regions of São Paulo State, Brazil. Although its leaves do not have a morphologically delimited pulvinus, the apical leaves are oriented parallel to the sun (paraheliotropic leaves), most notably around noon. Horizontal leaves at the base of shoots are oriented perpendicular to the sun's rays (diaheliotropic leaves). The ecophysiological significance of this is not fully understood. We investigated how paraheliotropism influences daily CO2 assimilation (A) and other gas exchange rates, water relations, leaf temperature (Tl), and how these relate to leaf structure as assessed by anatomical leaf descriptions. Paraheliotropic leaves had greater A and stomatal conductance (g s), which led to greater...
