Permineralized conifer-like leaves from the Jurassic of Patagonia (Argentina) and its paleoenvironmental implications Anais da ABC (AABC)
FUEYO,GEORGINA M. DEL; GNAEDINGER,SILVIA C.; DIAZ,MAITEN A. LAFUENTE; CARRIZO,MARTÍN A..
Abstract Abstract: Anatomically preserved conifer-like leaves from the Middle Jurassic La Matilde Formation at the Barda Blanca locality in the Gran Bajo de San Julián area, southern Patagonia are described here. Leaves are assigned to conifers based on the following foliar features: thick-walled epidermal cells, a sclerenchymatic hypodermis, resin canals and transfusion tracheids associated with the vascular bundle. General mesophyll anatomy and inferred foliar morphology suggest a similarity to large, broad, linear-lanceolate, multi-veined conifer-like leaves. The general foliar habit indicates an affinity with the large, multi-veined leaves of the Araucariaceae; especially with those exhibited by the species of the Araucaria sections, Araucaria and...

Leaf vein density and photosynthetic rate in Rosa: Is there a correlation? Boletín de la Sociedad
Pagano,Mario; Storchi,Paolo.
A thorough knowledge of the leaf vascular network and its evolution is essential for understanding the fluid dynamics of water movement in leaves. Recent studies have shown how these networks can be involved in the performance of photosynthesis, which is linked to the density of the vascular network per unit of leaf area. The aim of this study is to highlight the correlation between leaf vein density (VD) and physiological parameters. The hypothesis proposed was tested on the leaves of the "Isabel Renaissance" (IR) rose cultivar. The main result concerned the VD, which was significantly correlated with the maximum leaf net photosynthetic rate (PN). This finding supports the hypothesis that the vascular system of IR leaves can be correlated with leaf...

Temperature-dependent alterations of respiration in leaves of two selected vascular plant species: the role of the alternative oxidase pathway Bragantia
Pystina,Natalia V.; Danilov,Roman A..
Effects of higher temperatures on respiration and activity of alternative oxidase (AOX) were studied in mature leaves of Ajuga reptans L. and Rhodiola rosea L. Total respiration in both A. reptans and R. rosea increased exponentially with the increasing temperature of 10 °C to 35 °C. Respiration in the presence of benzhydroxamic acid (BHAM) also increased exponentially in accordance with the increasing temperature in the leaves of both A. reptans and R. rosea. Relative activity of the alternative pathway decreased significantly in the leaves of A. reptans with increasing temperatures. However, an increase in the relative activity of the alternative pathway was detected in the leaves of R. rosea. Thermoresistance of the alternative respiratory pathway was...

Distribution and recycling of canopy nitrogen storage reserves in sweet cherry (Prunus avium) fruiting branches following 15N-urea foliar applications after harvest Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Ayala,Marlene; Bañados,Pilar; Thielemann,Mariana; Toro,Román.
In sweet cherries, accumulated nitrogen (N) stores from the previous fall support early spring growth. To complement the N supply in the soil, Chilean growers use foliar urea applications after harvest. Information on the effectiveness of foliar N applications in sweet cherry is lacking. To study the canopy distribution of N applied as urea foliar sprays, an experiment using a "Bing"/"Gisela®6" ("GI®6") sweet cherry orchard was carried out in 2009/2010 in Chile (35° 09' 53'' S, 71° 20' 43'' W). The objective was to investigate N distribution and recycling in 3-year-old fruiting branches. A total of 120 branches (one per tree) were labeled using 15N-urea. 15N-urea was applied to the whole branch on four separate dates or treatments (TR) after fruit harvest:...
