Brown muscle disease (BMD), an emergent pathology affecting Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in Arcachon Bay (SW France) ArchiMer
Dang, C; De Montaudouin, X; Gonzalez, P; Mesmer Duldons, N; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
We describe an emerging pathology, brown muscle disease (BMD), which specifically affects the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in Arcachon Bay (France). BMD induces a transformation of the posterior adductor muscle, which becomes infused by conchiolin and calcified, reducing the ability of clams to bury. The disease affects both types of muscular tissue, with striated muscle becoming affected to a higher degree than smooth muscle. Two indices were created to quantify the symptoms: the Muscle Print Index, used for empty and live shells, and the Final Disease Index, utilized for live clams only. Histological sections were made and observed under light microscopy to examine the muscular damage and to investigate a causal agent. Sections revealed an...

MORPHOLOGICAL ALTERATIONS IN THE MASSETER MUSCLE INDUCED BY UNILATERAL EXTRACTION OF THE UPPER MOLARS IN GUINEA PIGS (Cavia porcellus) International Journal of Morphology
Mardegan Issa,João Paulo; Mizusaki Iyomasa,Mamie; Ioshie Mizusaki,Cristina; Watanabe,Ii-sei; Mandarim de Lacerda,Carlos Alberto.
The objective of the present study was to analyze morphological aspects of the structures of the stomatognathic system and their relationship with malocclusion. For this purpose, we determined the morphological alterations that occur in the masseter muscle of guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) after the induction of malocclusion by extraction of the left upper molars. Animals were divided into two groups (malocclusion and control group) and submitted to macroscopic, biometric and light microscopic analyses. The results showed a reduction in the width of the masseter muscle mainly in left side in the malocclusion group 60 days after unilateral extraction. Microscopically, round and polygonal muscle fibers of several diameters were observed, and altered muscle...

A histological study of microsporogenesis in Tarenna gracilipes (Rubiaceae) Naturalis
Vinckier, S.; Smets, E..
We studied the microsporogenesis in Tarenna gracilipes (Hayata) Ohwi, with special attention to the mode of exine deposition and tapetum development. We based this research on light (LM), scanning electron (SEM) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) observations of developing anthers of T. gracilipes, from the microspore mother cell stage towards anther dehiscence. Evidence is supplied that the microsporogenesis in T. gracilipes can be considered as simultaneous. Columellae, foot layer and tectum develop in a fibrillar matrix. Similar with earlier studies in Rubiaceae species, a single white line formed near the plasmalemma in the extra-apertural region. The developing endexine dilated into several white line centered lamellae at the apertures. An...

Vestured pits: a diagnostic character in the secondary xylem of Myrtales Naturalis
Jansen, S.; Pletsers, A.; Rabaey, D.; Lens, F..
Vestures are small projections from the secondary cell wall associated with tracheary elements of the secondary xylem. They are usually associated with bordered pits and characterize various angiosperm families, including important timber species such as Dipterocarpaceae and Eucalyptus trees. The micromorphology and distribution of vestures were studied in 22 species representing all families within the order Myrtales based on light and scanning electron microscopy. Vestures are consistently present near the outer pit aperture of bordered vessel pits, suggesting the synapomorphic character of this feature for the entire order. It is unclear in which geological period this feature originated in the evolution of the pre-Myrtalean lineages. In some species...

Comparative Wood Anatomy of the Primuloid Clade (Ericales s.l.) Naturalis
Lens, F.; Jansen, S.; Caris, P.; Serlet, L.; Smets, E..
The wood structure of 78 species from 27 genera representing the woody primuloids (Maesaceae, Myrsinaceae, and Theophrastaceae) was investigated using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicated that the ray structure, the nature of mineral inclusions, and the occurrence of breakdown areas in rays can be used to separate the three primuloid families from each other. Within Ericales, the presence of exclusively multiseriate rays is synapomorphic for Myrsinaceae and Theophrastaceae, and the occurrence of breakdown areas in rays is synapomorphic for Myrsinaceae. Within Myrsinaceae, the wood structure of the mangrove genus Aegiceras differs because it has short vessel elements that are storied, non-septate fibers, a...

A comparison of paraffin and resin-based techniques used in bark anatomy Naturalis
Hamann, T.; Smets, E.; Lens, F..
Bark anatomy is an unappreciated discipline in plant systematics, despite its great potential to reveal systematically informative features. In this paper, main reasons for the lack of detailed bark anatomical data in many plant families are identified, including problems with sectioning, terminological issues, and difficulties in observation of dilated stems. We deal with these problems by focusing on two aspects: (1) compare, discuss and improve existing sectioning and maceration techniques using two species with soft and hard bark tissues; and (2) discuss the best way to collect stem bark samples. We hope that this paper will stimulate inclusion of bark anatomical data in future systematic studies.

The multiple fuzzy origins of woodiness within Balsaminaceae using an integrated approach. Where do we draw the line? Naturalis
Lens, F.; Eeckhout, S.; Zwartjes, R.; Smets, E.; Janssens, S.B..
• Background and Aims: The family Balsaminaceae is essentially herbaceous, except for some woodier species that can be described as ‘woody’ herbs or small shrubs. The family is nested within the so-called balsaminoid clade of Ericales, including the exclusively woody families Tetrameristaceae and Marcgraviaceae, which is sister to the remaining families of the predominantly woody order. A molecular phylogeny of Balsaminaceaeis compared with wood anatomical observations to find out whether the woodier species are derived from herbaceous taxa (i.e. secondary woodiness), or whether woodiness in the family represents the ancestral state for the order (i.e. primary woodiness). • Methods: Wood anatomical observations of 68 Impatiens species and Hydrocera...

Morphological regional differences of epithelial cells along the midgut in Diatraea saccharalis Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) larvae Neotropical Entomology
Pinheiro,Daniela O.; Quagio-Grassiotto,Irani; Gregório,Elisa A..
The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis Fabricius, is a pest to sugarcane and many other crops. This work aims to characterize morphological variability in the epithelial cells (columnar, goblet and regenerative) along the midgut of D. saccharalis larvae. Fragments of the midgut (anterior, middle and posterior regions) were fixed and processed by light and scanning electron microscopy. There are both cytochemical and ultrastructural differences in the morphology of the epithelial cells, depending on their localization along the midgut. The apical surface of columnar cells shows an increase in both number and size of the apical protrusions from the anterior to the posterior midgut regions. There is an increase in the amount of PAS-positive (Periodic...

Anatomical and histological study of the liver and pancreas of two closely related mountain newts Neurergus microspilotus and N. kaiseri (Amphibia: Caudata: Salamandridae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Vaissi,Somaye; Parto,Paria; Sharifi,Mozafar.
ABSTRACT Anatomical and histological examinations were conducted on the digestive glands of two closely related mountain newts, Neurergus microspilotus (Nesterov, 1916) and Neurergus kaiseri Schmidt, 1952. In N. microspilotus and N. kaiseri the major digestive glands comprise a very large liver and a small pancreas. In both species the liver has two distinct lobes, right and left. Histologically, the parenchyma of the liver of both species is contained within a thin capsule of fibroconnective tissue. Glycogen deposits and fat storage often dissolve during the routine histological process and produce considerable histological variability. Sinusoids are lined with endothelial cells forming a very thin epithelial sheet, with discontinuous basement membrane....

Organogenesis from internodal segments of yellow passion fruit Scientia Agricola
Biasi,Luiz Antonio; Falco,Maria Cristina; Rodriguez,Adriana P. M.; Mendes,Beatriz M. Januzzi.
Organogenesis induction from internodal segments of yellow passionfruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) was obtained in a medium supplemented with 1.0-4.0 mg L-1 benzylaminopurine (BAP). Callus proliferation and adventitious shoot development were analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy. Callus proliferation and adventitious shoots were observed simultaneously and continuously, with asynchronous development of shoots in the explants. Proliferation of callus was observed in the explant cut ends in all treatments, including the control. The results show that concentrations of 1.0 or 2.0 mg L-1 BAP gave better rate of organogenesis. Higher concentrations were efficient for the induction of adventitious buds and, were, however, detrimental for...

Pollen morphology of Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) in Iran Acta Botanica
Shabestari,Elaheh Sadat Bagheri; Attar,Farideh; Riahi,Hosein; Sheidai,Masoud.
The genus Centaurea L. is one of the largest genera in the family Asteraceae. The number of taxa included in this genus ranges from 500 to 600 worldwide. Iran is one of the major centers of diversity for this genus. Pollen morphology has proved useful in the systematics of Asteraceae, as well as in that of some of its genera and species. The pollen morphology of 19 taxa of the genus Centaurea was investigated in detail by light and scanning electron microscopy. Examination under light microscopy showed pollen grains to be tricolporate, isopolar, radially symmetrical, oblate spheroidal, prolate spheroidal, subprolate, tectum perforate and scabrate. Based on the exine ornamentation observed under scanning electron microscopy, we identified two types of...

Pseudocyphellae ontogeny and thallus anatomy in species of Punctelia Krog (Parmeliaceae, lichenized Ascomycota) Acta Botanica
Zanetti,Camila Aparecida; Barbosa,Suzana Bissacot; Adachi,Sérgio Akira; Marcelli,Marcelo Pinto.
ABSTRACT The genus Punctelia has been traditionally characterized by the type and distribution of pseudocyphellae, medullary chemical substances and the shape of conidia, whereas its species have been distinguished using mainly the shape, location, abundance and size of pseudocyphellae. Given that Punctelia is not monophyletic, additional studies are needed to determine its current delimitation. The present study used conventional techniques for structural studies using optical and scanning electron microscopy in order to describe and compare the structure and ontogeny of the pseudocyphellae of five species of Punctelia. The main differences among the studied species involve the type of pseudocyphellae development, the presence or absence of an epicortex...

Anatomical and biochemical changes associated with the development and germination of Araucaria angustifolia seeds Biological Sciences
Shibata, Marília; Coelho, Cileide Maria Medeiros; Schmidt, Eder Carlos; Bouzon, Zenilda Laurita; Campos, José Marcello Salabert de; Maraschin, Marcelo.
This study aimed at assessing the cell cycle, and anatomical and biochemical changes that the embryonic axis of Araucaria angustifolia undergoes during development, focusing on the maturation stage. During all development, cells exhibited intense metabolic activity with an abundance of mitochondria, lipid bodies, and vacuolated cells. The continued accumulation of starch and protein was observed by LM and TEM and indicated by spectra of FTIR. Cell differentiation of the procambium was observed with a thickening of the cell wall and the formation of resiniferous ducts. At Stage III and IV, cells exhibited structural changes such as altered or elongated mitochondria and presence of plastoglobules. These results suggest that there is a gradual transition from...

Microscopic aspects of electrosensory system on the partially euryhaline lesser guitarfish Anais da ABC (AABC)
RANGEL,BIANCA S.; WOSNICK,NATASCHA; AMORIM,ALBERTO F.; K. JUNIOR,JOSÉ ROBERTO; RICI,ROSE E.G..
ABSTRACT The electrosensory system on elasmobranchs consists of subcutaneous electroreceptor organs known as ampullae of Lorenzini. The present study investigated the ampullae of Lorenzini morphology of the lesser guitarfish Zapteryx brevirostris, using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The pore number found in the ventral skin surface is much higher than that found in the dorsal portion, characteristic of species that inhabit the euphotic zone. Under light microscopy it was possible to observe that the wall canal consists of a single layer of squamous epithelial cells. The canal features distal expansion, where the ampullae are located with up to six alveoli. The sensory epithelium of ampullae is composed by cubic cells, with oval...

ROCHA,JOSIELE S.; NIETSCHE,SILVIA; PEREIRA,MARLON C.T.; MARIA O.,MERCADANTE-SIMÕES; SANTOS,RAYANE C.; XAVIER,ADELICA A..
Abstract: The banana tree is associated with different species of endophytic bacteria that can stimulate plant growth. However, further studies are needed to better understand the relationships between this group of bacteria and the host plant. The objective of this study was to investigate the localization of the EB-40 (Bacillus sp.) through anatomical and ultrastructural analyses in micropropagated banana plantlets. The results demonstrated the effective colonization of the EB-40 isolate in the intercellular and intracellular spaces, as well as in the rhizosphere region. The wall of endophytic bacteria contains calcium and nitrogen. The EB-40 isolate was also observed to associate with the plasma membrane and cell wall. These results further our...
