Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora Ducke, Lauraceae) is an Amazonian evergreen tree and a source of the purest linalool, the main component of its essential oil, which is very valuable in the international perfumery market. After decades of over-exploitation it is currently considered as threatened. We evaluated the genetic diversity and its distribution in four populations in Central Amazonia. Thirty-five reliable RAPD markers were generated, of which 32 were polymorphic (91.4%). Variation was higher within the populations (76.5%; p < 0.0001) and geographic distribution contributed to population differentiation (23.4%; p < 0.0001). The Amazon River had a small influence on gene flow (3.3%; p < 0.0001), but we identified evidence of gene flow across the... |

ABSTRACT Linalool is the main compound of many essential oils and occurs in two isomeric forms: S-(+)- and R-(-)-linalool. This study aimed to determine if linalool isomers have different antimicrobial and anesthetic properties in fish. For this purpose, these compounds were previously isolated from Lippia alba (Mill.)N. E. Brown and Ocimum americanum L. essential oils. Antimicrobial effects were evaluated through the microdilution test against Aeromonas hydrophila, an important fish disease etiologic agent. Induction time until sedation, anesthesia and recovery time were determined in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) through bath exposure (60, 180, 300 or 500 μL L-1). The results showed different biological properties for the isomers being S-(+)-linalool... |

The essential oils of two varieties of Camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora Nees & Eberm, Lauraceae), known as Hon-Sho and Ho-Sho cultivated in experimental stands in Southern Brazil were studied. The essential oils were obtained from the leaves and twigs of young plants by hydrodistillation. The identification of the components was performed using GC, GC/MS and retention indexes on methyl silicone and carbowax phases. The main components identified were linalool in the Ho-Sho and camphor in the Hon-Sho. |

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate the anesthetic effect of the essential oils (EOs) of Lippia alba (citral and linalool chemotypes, EOLA-C and EOLA-L respectively) and Lippia origanoides (chemotype carvacrol, EOLO-Ca) on tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) juveniles. The tested concentrations of the L. alba and L. origanoides EOs were: 25, 50, 100, and 200 μL/L. Time required to reach the stages of sedation, deep anesthesia, and recovery, as well as ventilatory frequency, were monitored for each EO concentration. The results indicated that all EO concentrations tested induced tambaqui anesthesia and that the ventilatory frequency was altered by the EOs. L. origanoides showed the shortest time to induce sedation and anesthesia, but had long... |

ABSTRACT Potassium (K) is one of the most required agricultural crop macronutrients, with potassium chloride being the most applied source. However, this fertilizer is not recommended for several crops due to its high chlorine content, promoting final product quality losses, thus being replaced by potassium sulphate. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the production and macronutrient, essential oil and linalool contents of coriander fruits submitted to different potassium sources and doses. The research was performed in a greenhouse, in plastic 46 kg boxes applying a mixture of soil and sand as substrate. The experimental design was of randomized blocks, applying a 2x4 factorial arrangement, with two potassium sources (potassium chloride and... |

Essential oil samples of Cinnamosma fragrans from two regions in Madagascar, Tsaramandroso (38 samples) and Mariarano (30 samples), were analysed by GC/MS. Fifty-seven components were identified, accounting from 88.3% to 99.4% of the oils' composition. The major components were linalool (72.5 +/- 23.3%) in Tsaramandroso and 1,8-cineole (47.3 +/- 10.2%) in Mariarano. Samples B8 (95.8% linalool) from Tsaramandroso and B143 (71.6% 1,8-cineole) from Mariarano containing the highest proportions of the two main components identified, were selected to determine antimicrobial activities against 10 microbial strains. Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus were the most sensitive strains to both oils. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were lower for... |

Fresh basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is used in food, phytotherapic industry, and in traditional therapeutic, due to its essential oil content and composition. Nevertheless basil can not be kept for long periods after harvest and its quality can be reduced. This work aimed to assess the influence of the season and harvest time in the postharvest conservation of basil stored for different periods. Basil was harvested at 8 am and 4 pm both in August/1999 and January/2000. Cuttings were conditioned in PVC packages and stored for 3, 6, and 9 days. During storage, chlorophyll content, essential oil content and composition were determined as well as microbiological analyses were carried out. Harvest season and the days of storage influenced the final content of... |
