Natural gaps associated with oxidative stress in Willisornis poecilinotus (Aves: Thamnophilidae) in a tropical forest Acta Amazonica
Gomes,Andreza de Lourdes Souza; Gonçalves,Andrey Felipe Gomes; Vieira,José Luiz Fernandes; Marceliano,Maria Luiza Videiro; Silva,José Maria Cardoso da.
Natural disturbances in tropical forests modify the availability and quality of resources and alter the patterns of bird distribution. These environmental changes increase the metabolic rate and disrupt the redox balance promoting oxidative stress. This study aimed to compare the abundance of Willisornis poecilinotus between gaps and the understory of a forest with undisturbed canopy at Caxiuanã National Forest. The abundance was correlated with vegetation heights. The oxidative stress and the stress promoting factors were determined in both sites of sampling. We captured 81 specimens of W. poecilinotus. The number of captures was high in gaps. The specimens sampled at gaps showed high levels of oxidative stress. The biomarkers of oxidative stress were...

EL-BASSIOUNY,Hala M.S; SADAK,Mervat Sh.
The interactive effects of saline water (2000, 4000 and 6000 mg/l) and foliar application of 400 mg/l of ascorbic acid (Asc) or α- tocopherol (α-Toco) on three flax cultivars (Sakha 3, Giza 8 and Ariane) were conducted during two successive seasons 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. The results showed that total soluble carbohydrates, free amino acids and proline contents were significantly increased with increasing salinity levels in the all three tested cultivars except free amino acid content of Giza 8 which showed insignificant decrease. While, nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) showed significant decreases compared with the corresponding control. Moreover, applications of vitamins (Asc or α-Toco) as foliar spraying increased all mentioned contents compared to the...

Metallothionein and lipid peroxidation as markers to assess health status of chronically oiled Magellanic penguins in Argentina Acta Toxicol. Argent.
Romero,María Belén; Polizzi,Paula; Chiodi,Leila; Robles,Alicia; Rodríguez Heredia,Sergio; Gerpe,Marcela.
Chronic oiling affects seabirds, with short (individual survival) and long-term (dynamics of population) effects. Magellanic penguin is the most affected species in Argentina. The aim was to evaluate the use of blood biochemical-molecular biomarkers (MT and TBARs) to assess health status of Magellanic penguin exposed to chronic environmental oiling, in addition with routine hematological analyses (differential WBC count and PCV). Oiled specimens presented significant higher RBC metallothionein and TBARs concentrations than those from shelter; while routine hematological parameters were within normal levels for penguins and did not show any difference between both groups. These results demonstrated the higher sensibility of both biomarkers, evidencing...

Temporal dynamics of the response to Al stress in Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Alcântara,Berenice K. de; Pizzaia,Daniel; Piotto,Fernando A.; Borgo,Lucélia; Brondani,Gilvano E.; Azevedo,Ricardo A..
Lipid peroxidation and root elongation of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis were studied under stress conditions in response to aluminum (Al), a metal known to limit agricultural productivity in acidic soils primarily due to reduced root elongation. In Brazil, the Grancam 1277 hybrid (E. grandis × E. camaldulensis) has been planted in the "Cerrado", a region of the country with a wide occurrence of acidic soils. The present study demonstrated that the hybrid exhibited root growth reduction and increased levels of lipid peroxidation after 24h of treatment with 100 µM of Al, which was followed by a reduction in lipid peroxidation levels and the recovery of root elongation after 48h of Al exposure, suggesting a rapid response to the early...

Mitochondrial DNA damage associated with lipid peroxidation of the mitochondrial membrane induced by Fe2+-citrate Anais da ABC (AABC)
Almeida,Andréa M.; Bertoncini,Clélia R.A.; Borecký,Jiri; Souza-Pinto,Nadja C.; Vercesi,Aníbal E..
Iron imbalance/accumulation has been implicated in oxidative injury associated with many degenerative diseases such as hereditary hemochromatosis, beta-thalassemia, and Friedreich's ataxia. Mitochondria are particularly sensitive to iron-induced oxidative stress - high loads of iron cause extensive lipid peroxidation and membrane permeabilization in isolated mitochondria. Here we detected and characterized mitochondrial DNA damage in isolated rat liver mitochondria exposed to a Fe2+-citrate complex, a small molecular weight complex. Intense DNA fragmentation was induced after the incubation of mitochondria with the iron complex. The detection of 3' phosphoglycolate ends at the mtDNA strand breaks by a 32P-postlabeling assay, suggested the involvement of...

Mentha pulegium crude extracts induce thiol oxidation and potentiate hemolysis when associated to t-butyl hydroperoxide in human’s erythrocytes Anais da ABC (AABC)
BIANCHINI,MATHEUS C.; GALVÃO,DENNYURA O.; TAMBORENA,TATIANA; ALVES,CLAUDIA O.; PUNTEL,ROBSON L..
ABSTRACT Mentha pulegium (Lamiaceae) tea has been used as a traditional medicine; however, the modulatory effect of M. pulegium extracts on damage to human erythrocytes associated to t-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) exposure remains to be investigated. Accordingly, we perform this study in order to test the hypothesis that aqueous and ethanolic extracts of M. pulegium could modulate the hemolysis associated to t-BHP exposure, non-protein thiol (NPSH) oxidation and lipid peroxidation (measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances - TBARS) in human erythrocytes. Samples were co-incubated with t-BHP (4 mmol/L) and/or aqueous or ethanolic extracts (10-1000 mg/mL) during 120 min to further analysis. We found that both extracts, when associated to t-BHP,...

Melatonin Protects the Heart, Lungs and Kidneys from Oxidative Stress under Intermittent Hypobaric Hypoxia in Rats Biol. Res.
Farías,Jorge G; Zepeda,Andrea B; Calaf,Gloria M.
Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is the main secretory product of the pineal gland in all mammals including humans, but it is also produced in other organs. It has been previously demonstrated to be a powerful organ-protective substance under oxidative stress conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of melatonin in several organs such as heart, lung, kidney, and of the reproductive system, such as testis and epididymis in animals exposed to intermittent hypobaric hypoxia and therefore exposed to oxidative stress and analyzed by lipid peroxidation. Ten-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups for 96 hours during 32 days under: 1) Normobaric conditions, 2) plus physiologic solution, 3) plus melatonin, 4)...

Zinc in the prevention of Fe2initiated lipid and protein oxidation Biol. Res.
ZAGO,M. PAOLA; VERSTRAETEN,SANDRA V.; OTEIZA,PATRICIA I..
In the present study we characterized the capacity of zinc to protect lipids and proteins from Fe2+-initiated oxidative damage. The effects of zinc on lipid oxidation were investigated in liposomes composed of brain phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylserine (PS) at a molar relationship of 60:40 (PC:PS, 60:40). Lipid oxidation was evaluated as the oxidation of cis-parinaric acid or as the formation of 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS). Zinc protected liposomes from Fe2+ (2.5-50 muM)-supported lipid oxidation. However, zinc (50 muM) did not prevent the oxidative inactivation of glutamine synthelase and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase when rat brain superntants were oxidized in the presence of 5 muM Fe2+ and 0.5 mM H2O2 .We also...

Increasing the rate of drying reduces metabolic imbalance, lipid peroxidation and critical water content in radicles of garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) Biol. Res.
Ntuli,Tobias M; Pammenter,Norman W; Berjak,Patricia.
Orthodox seeds become desiccation-sensitive as they undergo germination. As a result, germinating seeds serve as a model to study desiccation sensitivity in plant tissues. The effects of the rate of drying on the viability, respiratory metabolism and free radical processes were thus studied during dehydration and wet storage of radicles of Pisum sativum. For both drying regimes desiccation could be described by exponential and inverse modified functions. Viability, as assessed by germination capacity and tetrazolium staining, remained at 100% during rapid (< 24 h) desiccation. However, it declined sharply at c. 0.26 g g¹ dm following slow (c. 5 days) drying. Increasing the rate of dehydration thus lowered the critical water content for survival. Rapid...
