A risk programming model was developed to evaluate the tradeoffs between risk and expected returns in beef-forage production systems. The specification represents nutrient and intake considerations when allocating forage among cattle enterprises; it also incorporates the various sources of risk facing livestock producers. Efficient ranch organizations were derived for a representative eastern Oklahoma ranch using MOTAD and Target-MOTAD formulations. Diversification of forage enterprises, introduction of cow-calf enterprises, and retained ownership of weaned calves were identified as important responses to reductions in acceptable levels of risk. Results also indicated efficient ranch plans to be sensitive to the risk criteria and producer's willingness... |

In this study, we investigate the impact of new market opportunities on Gabra nomadic pastoralists living in an arid climate in northern Kenya. The Gabra have recently experienced growth of milk marketing opportunities, and this change has caused a renegotiation of intrahousehold arrangements that affect households' location and migration decisions. We model three different outcomes of the household bargaining processes and test them empirically. Our results are consistent with a contested model of the household in which husbands locate households farther from towns in order to limit milk marketing opportunities. |

This paper is designed to analyze the present milk pricing system of Spain and to identify opportunities for its improvement. The general objectives of providing descriptive, diagnostic, predictive or projective and prescriptive information will include the following: (1) to describe the more important characteristics of the milk pricing system of Spain; (2) to diagnose some of the shortcomings of the present system; and (3) to prescribe possible changes in the pricing system leading to improved performance. |

The primary objective of this study is to formulate a multiple regression equation for predicting the November average price of Grade A, white, large eggs delivered in Detroit, Michigan. To accomplish the objective, several equations will be tried. The equation with the highest predicting power will be chosen to predict November price in 1970 as of October of that year. October was chosen on the basis that October price difference between medium and large size affected the November price considerable. Therefore, the factor just could not be dropped. The secondary objective in the study is to examine demand elasticities for eggs. Egg producers and policy makers may have the base in making decisions if egg marketing order is ineffective in the future. |

This study presents the empirical results of estimating the household broiler meat expenditure pattern in the western region using the 1977-78 United States Department of Agriculture Nationwide Food Consumption Survey. The effects of assuming homoscedasticity and heteroscedasticity in the tobit model on resulting estimates are discussed in terms of estimated coefficients, marginal effects, and elasticities. Based on the strength of the sample data, the results suggest that specification of the homoscedastic model should be rejected in favor of the heteroscedastic model, implying that the validity of homoscedasticity should not be routinely accepted without testing when applying tobit procedure to analyze survey data. |

Practioner's Abstract: Mad cow disease has caused two disruptions in European beef markets--first in the U.K. in 1996 following the announcement of a link to new variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease in humans, and the second in late 2000 following the discovery of "homegrown" cases of the disease in Germany and Spain. In September 2001 the disease was discovered in Japan where it also resulted in an immediate and substantial reduction in beef demand. The disease has not been found in the U.S. but the current scope of detection efforts provides little assurance that it does not exist at a very low level. The U.S. has taken a number of precautionary measures to reduce both the risk of importing the disease and the risk of the disease spreading if it... |

Bolivia is one of the largest developing countries in South America that has been received the aid from the international cooperation since the seventies. Many programmes and projects were implemented across the territories of the country in the aim to reduce the poverty. However, the experiences claim that despite of some important results obtained, the international cooperation is one of the main actors responsible for the external dependence on the territories and their commitment to build up a sustainable model of rural development that can overcome the problem of poverty fails. At the same time, it is demonstrated that the most successful experiences of local producers’ organizations are heavily depended on the external aid showing the economical... |

This paper evaluates the production structure of the South African agricultural sector for the period 1970-1998, using a translog function. The results show that the production structure is best represented by production technology that is Hicks-neutral and homothetic. This information is useful in evaluating the results of previous research on the structure of South African agricultural production, particularly relatively recent research on elasticities of substitution. In addition, it also provides the basis for meaningful future analysis of aspects related to the production structure of agriculture. |

Results of a study of sow inventory and pig supply responses are reported in this paper. Annual time series data (1953-54 to 1974-75) were used to estimate a two equation recursive model for Australia. Tests for structural changes in sow inventory response were conducted over time for Australian data and between regions for Victorian data. Single period lags of sow inventories, pig prices and feed prices were used to estimate short-run and long-run elasticities. The results yield information on pig supply additional to that presently available in the published literature. Evidence of structural change is reflected in elasticities of sow inventory response. While the hypothesis of structural change is statistically supported for regional aggregates of... |

The Uruguay Round World Trade Organization (URWTO) agreement and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) created both benefits and costs for dairy farmers. The URWTO agreement benefits include border protection that helped to keep U.S. prices for cheddar cheese, butter, and nonfat dry milk 40 percent, 78 percent and 36 percent, respectively, higher than world prices during 1995-2001. Wisconsin's dairy industry benefited from expansion of dry whey and lactose exports under the URWTO agreement. Costs under the complex agreement included an unanticipated increase in milk protein concentrate (MPC) imports. Benefits under the NAFTA include the scheduled elimination of Mexico's tariffs on major imports of U.S. dairy products by 2003. Over the... |

A number of technology transfer (diffusion) programmes involving amongst others veterinary surgeon services subsidised by the government, were launched in the former homelands of South Africa between 1980 and 1993. Many of these programmes were discontinued after the general election of 1994. In order to evaluate the adoption of technology in Qwaqwa, a former Sotho speaking homeland, two Logit models were fit using the conventional definition of an adopter and an adapted definition, which included potential adopters with the adopters. Where the conventional definition of adoption was estimated, livestock income per LSU, ram technology, roads and suppliers of livestock inputs are significant variables contributing to adoption. The results of the adapted... |
