Morphometric characteristics of the Mangalarga Marchador horse breed determined by nonlinear models PAB
Souza,Felipe Amorim Caetano de; Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Cunha,Fabiana Oliveira; Ribeiro,Rafaela Aparecida; Muniz,Fabiana Rezende; Meirelles,Sarah Laguna Conceição; Muniz,Joel Augusto; Moura,Raquel Silva.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the development of the morphometric characteristics of Mangalarga Marchador horses through nonlinear models. The transversal method was used to collect data on height at the withers (HW), body length (BL), and thoracic (TP) and cannon (CP) perimeters from 200 horses (75 males and 125 non-pregnant females), aged between 6 and 153 months. The parameters of the Brody, Gompertz, logistic, and von Bertalanffy nonlinear models were estimated using the R software. Models were compared and selected using the coefficient of determination, the residual standard deviation, and the corrected Akaike information criterion. For adult females, HW, BL, TP, and CP ranged between 146.45-148.34, 148.59-151.64,...

Odds ratios and logistic regression: further examples of their use and interpretation AgEcon
Hailpern, Susan M.; Visintainer, Paul F..
Logistic regression is perhaps the most widely used method for adjustment of confounding in epidemiologic studies. Its popularity is understandable. The method can simultaneously adjust for confounders measured on different scales; it provides estimates that are clinically interpretable; and its estimates are valid in a variety of study designs with few underlying assumptions. To those of us in practice settings, several aspects of applying and interpreting the model, however, can be confusing and counterintuitive. We attempt to clarify some of these points through several examples. We apply the method to a study of risk factors associated with periventricular leucomalacia and intraventricular hemorrhage in neonates. We relate the logit model to...

Wilderness and Primitive Area Recreation Participation and Consumption: An Examination of Demographic and Spatial Factors AgEcon
Bowker, James Michael; Murphy, D.; Cordell, H. Ken; English, Donald B.K.; Bergstrom, John C.; Starbuck, C. Meghan; Betz, Carter J.; Green, Gary T..
This paper explores the influence of demographic and spatial variables on individual participation and consumption of wildland area recreation. Data from the National Survey on Recreation and the Environment are combined with geographical information system-based distance measures to develop nonlinear regression models used to predict both participation and the number of days of participation in wilderness and primitive area recreation. The estimated models corroborate previous findings indicating that race (black), ethnicity (Hispanic), immigrant status, age, and urban dwelling are negatively correlated with wildland visitation, while income, gender (male), and education positively affect wildland recreation participation and use. The presence of a...

Non-Linear Model to Describe Growth Curves of Commercial Turkey in the Tropics of Mexico Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Segura-Correa,JC; Santos-Ricalde,RH; Palma-Ávila,I.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to select the best non-linear model that fits the growth curve of turkeys managed under the tropical conditions of Southern Mexico. Data from 481 Hybrid converter turkeys (236 females and 245 males) reared under commercial conditions typical of that region were used. Turkeys were given ad libitum access to feed and water. Body weight was weekly recorded from 1 day to 23 weeks of age. Five non-linear mathematical models (Brody, Gompertz, Logistic, von Bertalanffy and Richards) were chosen to describe the age-weight relationship. The Brody and Richards' models fail to converge. The best fitting model was chosen based on the average prediction error (APE); the multiple determination coefficient R2 and the Akaike...

Bayesian Analysis for the Comparison of Nonlinear Regression Model Parameters: an Application to the Growth of Japanese Quail Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Firat,MZ; Karaman,E; Başar,EK; Narinc,D.
ABSTRACT This paper discusses the Bayesian approach as an alternative to the classical analysis of nonlinear models for growth curve data in Japanese quail. A Bayesian nonlinear modeling method is introduced and compared with the classical nonlinear least squares (NLS) method using three non-linear models that are widely used in modeling the growth data of poultry. The Gompertz, Richards and Logistic models were fitted to 499 Japanese quail weekly averaged body weight data. Normal prior was assumed for all growth curve parameters of the models with assuming Jeffreys' non-informative prior for residual variances. Models were compared based on the Bayesian measure of fit, deviance information criterion (DIC), and our results indicated the better fit of...

Nonlinear models to describe height and diameter of sugarcane RB92579 variety Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Jane,Sérgio Alberto; Fernandes,Felipe Augusto; Muniz,Joel Augusto; Fernandes,Tales Jesus.
ABSTRACT Brazil is the world’s largest sugarcane producer (Saccharum spp.), followed by India and China. In 2019, Brazil produced 642.7 million tons of sugarcane, having collected 1.44 billion and 983.52 million dollars from sugar and ethanol exports, respectively. For crop management, it is important to monitor plant growth, duration of growth phases and point of physiological maturation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the fit of nonlinear Logistic, Gompertz, Brody and von Bertalanffy models to the height and diameter growth of ratoon cane stalk RB92579 variety, considering age in days. The parameters of models were estimated using R software routines, applying the least squares method and the iterative Gauss-Newton process. The adjustment of...

Epidemiological analysis of clones and cultivars of potato in soil naturally infested with Ralstonia solanacearum biovar 2 Trop. Plant Pathol.
Silveira,José R.P.; Duarte,Valmir; Moraes,Marcelo G.; Lopes,Carlos A.; Fernandes,José M.; Barni,Valmor; Maciel,João L.N..
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the progress of Ralstonia solanacearum bacterial potato wilt biovar 2 (race 3) in 14 potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars or clones, the resistance of potato clone MB 03 (selected in Brasília, Brazil) to race 1 of R. solanacearum, and the occurrence of the pathogen in tubers harvested from asymptomatic potato plants. During the spring (September to the end of November in the southern hemisphere) of 1999 and 2000, 14 cultivars or clones were grown in a field naturally infested with R. solanacearum biovar 2, in Caxias do Sul, RS. The number of wilted potato plants was recorded each week and a disease progress curve plotted, the resistance of the potato genotypes to bacterial wilt being evaluated by determining...
