MoMAR-D: a technological challenge to monitor the dynamics of the Lucky Strike vent ecosystem ArchiMer
Colaco, Ana; Blandin, Jerome; Cannat, M.; Carval, Thierry; Chavagnac, V.; Connelly, D.; Fabian, M.; Ghiron, S.; Goslin, Jean; Miranda, J. M.; Reverdin, G.; Sarrazin, Jozee; Waldmann, C.; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
The MoMAR (monitoring the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) project was initiated in 1998 by the InterRidge programme to promote and coordinate long-term multidisciplinary monitoring of hydrothermal vents at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The major objective of the project is to study vent ecosystem dynamics using a multidisciplinary approach from geophysics to microbiology over a period of a few decades. MoMAR-D is a demonstration project of MoMAR, partially funded by the European network of excellence ESONET (http://www.esonet-noe.org/). MoMAR-D aims to deploy and manage a multidisciplinary observing system at the Lucky Strike vent field for 1 year. This large hydrothermal field is located at the centre of one of the most volcanically active segments of the MAR. The...

Genesis, evolution, and future of a long-term study of small mammals in South America Mastozool. neotrop.
Meserve,Peter L.
Since 1989, I have been involved in a long-term ecological study in the semiarid zone of north-central Chile. To date it has uncovered many exciting aspects of the structure and functioning of the unusual biota here. However, the genesis of this project actually dates back to 1973 when I first saw the study area in Parque Nacional Bosque Fray Jorge as a visiting professor at the Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago. At that time, I initiated a small mammal live-trapping study in collaboration with Eric Le Boulengé of Belgium. Little did we know that the basic data we collected on small mammal populations, diets, and predators then would lead to the installation of what is now the longest running field manipulation in temperate South America. In this...

The ecological value of long-term studies of birds and mammals in Central America, South America and Antarctica RChHN
Taig-Johnston,Megan; Strom,Madeline K.; Calhoun,Kendall; Nowak,Kendra; Ebensperger,Luis A.; Hayes,Loren.
Abstract This review covers long-term ecological studies in Central America, South America, and Antarctica that include at least 10 years of data on both terrestrial and marine mammals as well as birds. Specifically, we compiled long-term research on social systems, population ecology, and community ecology. Long-term research is necessary to understand decadal trends and dynamics that would otherwise go unnoticed in short-term studies. This review highlights the impact of ecological conditions as well as territoriality and conflict on social organization and structure, the role that environmental perturbations and climate change have on populations, and how interaction between biotic and abiotic factors influence entire ecological communities. It...

Evidences of El Niño effects on the mullet fishery of the Patos Lagoon estuary BABT
Vieira,João Paes; Garcia,Alexandre Miranda; Grimm,Alice Marlene.
Based on biological and meteorological long-term database (1979-1983 and 1996-2000), we analyzed the variation in the juvenile recruitment and artisanal fishery landings of the mullet (Mugil platanus) in the Patos Lagoon estuary and its relationships with the regional rainfall and estuarine salinity anomalies during two strong El Niño events (1982-83 and 1997-98). Juvenile and adult mullets declined in abundance under the high rainfall and near-zero salinity that prevailed in the estuary during both El Niño events. We proposed two different hypotheses to explain the El Niño-induced effects on the juvenile and adult stages of the mullet in the estuary. First, high freshwater outflow during a very strong El Niño might render ineffective the mechanism of...
