Impact of volcanic ash deposition on foliar productivity and insect herbivory in northern Patagonia deciduous forests Ecología austral
Chaneton,Enrique J; Mazía,Noemí; Garibaldi,Lucas A; Chaij,Jaquelina; Kitzberger,Thomas.
Volcanism has been a major force shaping the dynamics of Andean landscapes during the Holocene. Yet we still know little about the consequences of modern volcanic events on forest functioning. Ash fall may elicit multiple direct and indirect effects on key ecosystem attributes, with disturbance severity likely varying with distance to the crater. We examined the impact of ash deposition on foliage productivity and insect herbivory after the 2011 eruption of the Volcán Puyehue-Cordón Caulle system, in Nothofagus pumilio forests of northern Patagonia, Argentina. Tree leaf litterfall, a surrogate for annual foliar production, was measured before and after the event in wet and dry forest sites, which were located 22 km and 80 km east from the crater and were...

Wide reproductive period of a long-distance migratory fish in a subtropical river, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Zaniboni-Filho,Evoy; Ribolli,Josiane; Hermes-Silva,Samara; Nuñer,Alex P. O..
ABSTRACT Salminus brasiliensis is a potamodromous fish species that occurs in southern South American rivers. In spite of its ecological and economic relevance, information regarding the reproductive biology of S. brasiliensis is still scarce. This study used data from 18 years of continuous sampling in the Upper Uruguay River Basin, analyzing 718 adult fish (307 males, 243 females, 168 undefined) captured at different months of the year. The results showed that the reproductive timing for S. brasiliensis is wide in the Upper Uruguay River, with the occurrence of mature fish between the month of August and March and spawned individuals between July and May of the next year. These results were sustained by the increase of gonadal somatic relationship (GSR)...

Morphometric changes in the hoof capsule of Criollo foals from birth to weaning Ciência Rural
Souza,João Ricardo Malheiros de; Pimentel,Anelise Maria Hammes; Folle,Vinícius Azevedo; Pfeifer,João Pedro Hübbe; Schuster,Aline Bacchieri Gallo; Segabinazzi,Lorenzo Garrido Teixeira Martini; Lau,Lucas Correa; Martins,Charles Ferreira.
ABSTRACT: South America has numerous Criollo horse breeding farms; however, information on foal hoof growth is still limited and identifying the ideal periods to apply corrective trimming is a frequent concern for horse owners. In the present study, a morphometric analysis of hoof growth was performed on 46 Criollo foals from birth to weaning (0-8 months). Results showed that hoof growth rate was higher in the first four months followed by a decrease until the eighth month. Average growth rate of the hoof was 0.21cm per month, whereas that of the heel was 0.14cm per month. However, no significant differences were observed between medial and lateral heel length or between limbs. Coronary band perimeter and solar width showed an average increase of 0.97cm...
