Isolation of a yeast strain able to produce a polygalacturonase with maceration activity of cassava roots Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Martos,María Alicia; Zubreski,Emilce Roxana; Combina,Mariana; Garro,Oscar Alfredo; Hours,Roque Alberto.
The objective of the present study was the isolation of a yeast strain, from citrus fruit peels, able to produce a polygalacturonase by submerged fermentation with maceration activity of raw cassava roots. Among 160 yeast strains isolated from citrus peels, one strain exhibited the strongest pectinolytic activity. This yeast was identified as Wickerhamomyces anomalus by 5.8S-ITS RFLP analysis and confirmed by amplification of the nucleotide sequence. The yeast produced a polygalacturonase (PG) in Erlenmeyer shake flasks containing YNB, glucose, and citrus pectin. PG synthesis occurred during exponential growth phase, reaching 51 UE.mL-1 after 8 hours of fermentation. A growth yield (Yx/s) of 0.43 gram of cell dry weight per gram of glucose consumed was...

Effect of Different Methods of Bone Preparation on the Skeleton of the African Giant Pouched Rat (Cricetomys gambianus) International Journal of Morphology
Onwuama,Kenechukwu Tobechukwu; Salami,Sulaiman Olawoye; Ali,Magdaline; Nzalak,James Oliver.
This study was conducted using 12 Adult African Giant Pouched rats of both sexes to compare and to see the effect of three different methods of bone preparation on the bones of the African Giant Rat (Cricetomys gambianus). Five rats were used for maceration method, three for burial method and four rats for chemical method (involving two rats each for 3% and 5% solution of Sodium Hydroxide). Chemical preparation with Sodium Hydroxide was found to be the best method in terms of time required to complete the procedure, number of bones recovered, colour of the bones and odour of the preparation. However, the chemical method has the disadvantage of dissolving and cracking the bones if the concentration used is high and prompt attention is not given to the...

Digestion and energy value of macerated sudangrass hay used in growing-finishing diets for feedlot cattle Scientia Agricola
Jorquera,Alejandro Plascencia; Ponce,José Gerardo Serrano; Sánchez-Mendoza,Berenice; Serrano,Alberto Barreras; Calderón-Cortés,José Fernando; López-Soto,María Alejandra; Montaño Gómez,Martín Francisco; Zinn,Richard Avery.
Mechanical maceration enhances site and extent of digestion of low-moisture, low-quality forages. Four Holstein steers (172 ± 8 kg) with cannulas in rumen and proximal duodenum were used in 4x4 Latin square design to evaluate the process of mechanical maceration of sudangrass hay on the characteristics of ruminal and total tract digestion. Treatments consisted of a steam-flaked corn-based growing diet supplemented with 21 % forage (DM basis) as: i) wheat straw (Triticum aestivum, STRW), ii) sudangrass hay (Sorghum sudanense, SG), iii) macerated SG at intensity of 4,134 kPa (MAC600) and 4) macerated SG at intensity of 6,200 kPa (MAC900). All forages were ground to pass through a 3.8 cm screen before incorporation into complete mixed diets (21:79 forage to...
