An electrically operated kola nut pods breaking machine CIGR Journal
Bamgboye, A. Isaac; Okedun, R. A..
Kola nut pod breaking is a very tedious task manually; therefore its mechanization is essential for effective processing.  The objectives of this study are to design and fabricate a kola nut pod breaking machine and performance evaluation of kola nut pods breaking machine.  Some physical and mechanical properties required for machine design were determined using standard methods.  The machine was powered by an electric motor, with the hammer attached to the shaft using a drum with a rope tension of 171.68N, cross–sectional area of 5.027 x 10-5m2 and 3414.90 kN/m2 tensile stress.  The speed of the machine used by the pulley was 308.57 r/min to operate. The machine was evaluated by using one to four pods at a time, and was replicated four times. The average...

Exploring Mechanization Degree and Capacity in Malaysia’s Oil Palm Plantations CIGR Journal
El Pebrian, Darius; Ak. Mohiddin, Dk. Norhajijah.
Development of mechanization is a crucial element in oil palm plantations in Malaysia since its significant role in reducing of highly dependence on manual workers. Nonetheless, the recent mechanization degree and capacity in oil palm plantations in this country is still rarely studied.  This study aims to determine the mechanization degree and capacity in oil palm plantations in Malaysia. Determining mechanization degree and mechanization capacity were computed based on the available secondary data from a recently survey on 4541 oil palm estates in Malaysia.  The findings showed that average mechanization degree and capacity of field operations in Malaysia’s oil palm plantations were 10.88% and 11.04%, respectively, and considered as low when compared to...

Development and performance evaluation of a piston type hydraulically operated briquetting machine with replaceable moulds CIGR Journal
Akogun, Opeyemi Ayodeji; Waheed, Mufutau Adekojo.
This study focuses on the development and performance evaluation of a piston type briquetting machine with replaceable moulds. The properties of the briquettes produced from cornhusk (CH), cassava peel (CP), sawdust (SD) at different torrefaction conditions and particle size less than 1.8 mm were studied with cassava starch as binder. The fuel application of the feedstock for co-firing in coal engines was evaluated by combustion indices. This machine has a replaceable cylindrical or square mould that could be used interchangeably. The machine has the capacity to produce 576 briquettes on an 8-hours operation while the biomass material flow rate for densification is 1.58 L/h. The highest maximum density of 1.09 g/cm3 was attained for cylindrical CP...
