Malassezia pachydermatis: enzymes production in isolates from external ear canal of dogs with and without otitis Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Coutinho,S.D.A..
The relationship between production of enzymes and pathogenicity of Malassezia pachydermatis strains was studied. Thirty strains of M. pachydermatis isolated from dogs were used: 15 originating from animals with external otitis and 15 obtained from ears of asymptomatic dogs. The samples, obtained by introduction of a sterile swab into the auditory canal after cleaning the auricle with alcohol-ether solution, were seeded onto Sabouraud dextrose agar with chloramphenicol (100mg/l) and were incubated at 37°C for up to two weeks. The colonies were identified according to their macro-and-micromorphology. All strains were investigated for the production of chondroitin-sulphatase, hyaluronidase, phospholipase and proteinase. Most of the strains showed a high...

Freqüência de Malassezia pachydermatis em otite externa de cães Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Leite,C.A.L.; Abreu,V.L.V.; Costa,G.M..
The occurrence of Malassezia pachydermatis in the ears of dogs with otitis externa, comparing both direct exam and growth on culture method was evaluated. Auditory cerumen/exsudate specimens of 50 dogs with otitis externa were analized for M.pachydermatis. Stained by Giemsa, were prepared and microscopically analysed for budding yeasts. Each sample was cultured on modified Sabouraud glucose agar incubated at 28°C (82.4 F) for detection of M. pachydermatis. The frequency of M. pachydermatis from auditory meatus of otitic dogs was 79% (direct microscopy) and 88% (growth on modified Sabouraud glucose agar), and no difference between the results provided by both methods used in the fungus detection was observed.

Evaluation of Malassezia pachydermatis antifungal susceptibility using two different methods BJM
Nascente,Patrícia da Silva; Nobre,Márcia de Oliveira; Schuch,Luiz Filipe; Lucia-Júnior,Thomaz; Ferreiro,Laerte; Meireles,Mário Carlos Araújo.
Malassezia pachydermatis is recognized as a normal inhabitant and an opportunistic pathogen of the external ear canal and skin of dogs and cats. In especial clinical conditions, and mainly in the cases of therapeutic failure related to external otitis and dermatitis complicated by this yeast, it is recommended test susceptibility to antifungal drugs. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the susceptibility of 44 isolates of M. pachydermatis from the external ear canal and skin of dogs and cats using two different in vitro antifungal susceptibility methods: the Etest® and the broth microdilution method. Thirty-five samples were tested using the Etest®, twenty-four samples were tested using the broth microdilution method and fifteen samples were tested...

OCCURRENCY OF MALASSEZIA PACHYDERMATIS AND OTHER INFECTIOUS AGENTS AS CAUSE OF EXTERNAL OTITIS IN DOGS FROM RIO GRANDE DO SUL STATE, BRAZIL (1996/1997) BJM
Nobre,Márcia de Oliveira; Castro,Ângela Pötter de; Nascente,Patrícia da Silva; Ferreiro,Laerte; Meireles,Mario Carlos A..
The purpose of this work was to evaluate the frequency of Malassezia pachydermatis infection and other infectious agents in dogs with external otitis and with healthy auditory tubes. Clinical manifestations of external otitis were evaluated. Samples from the auditory tube of 102 dogs with otitis and from 32 healthy dogs were submitted to direct microscopic examination and cultured in blood agar and Sabouraud dextrose agar with chloramphenicol and cycloheximide. Direct examination showed more than ten cells of M. pachydermatis in 52.0% of the samples from dogs with otitis, but in only 21.8% of the healthy auditory tube samples. M. pachydermatis was isolated in 37.5% of the samples from dogs with healthy auditory tube and 76.5% (p<0.01) of the samples...

CLSI broth microdilution method for testing susceptibility of Malasseziapachydermatis to thiabendazole BJM
Nascente,Patrícia da Silva; Meinerz,Ana Raquel Mano; Faria,Renata Osório de; Schuch,Luiz Filipe Damé; Meireles,Mário Carlos Araújo; Mello,João Roberto Braga de.
Thiabendazole, classified as antiparasitic and also used as an antifungal drug, can be found as otological solution indicated for treatment of parasitic and fungal external otitis in small animals. Malassezia pachydermatis is a yeast recognized as a normal inhabitant on the skin and mucous membranes of dogs and cats. However, it is considered an opportunistic agent that causes external otitis and dermatitis in these animals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro effect of thiabendazole against 51 isolates of M. pachydermatis using the CLSI Broth Microdilution method that has been adapted for this yeast species (NCCLS, 2002). Based on this test, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) of thiabendazol was calculated. Subsequently, the...
