Combined hydrothermal process of auto-hydrolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis as pretreatment for release of glucose from malt bagasse. The auto-hydrolysis pretreatment removes the hemicellulose and chemically modifies the lignin, facilitating the access of enzymes to the cellulose, which will be converted into glucose.

Alkaline pretreatment process followed by enzymatic hydrolysis for release of glucose from malt bagasse. The alkaline pretreatment promotes biomass delignification, exposing the cellulose fibers, making them accessible to enzymatic action. A maximum conversion of cellulose into glucose (74%) was achieved when sodium hydroxide was used at a concentration of 4% (w/v).

A spatial equilibrium model of production and trade is used to assess the effects of alternative levels of supply, demand, and policy variables on composition and direction of malting barley and malt trade flows.

IMPACTS OF DON IN THE MALTING BARLEY SUPPLY CHAIN: AGGREGATE COSTS AND FIRM-LEVEL RISKS AgEcon

DON is a toxic byproduct of fusarium head blight (FHB), a fungal disease of small grains. Beginning in 1993, a prolonged outbreak of FHB occurred in the Upper Midwest, the traditional source of most six-rowed malting barley produced in the United States. Price discounts associated with DON in barley have been significant. This paper has two objectives. The first is to estimate the impact of DON on the value of malting barley grown in the Upper Midwest. Using crop quality data, we use a linear programming model to derive optimal blends of barley supplies, given discount schedules and the distribution of quality factors. Profile of the alcohols produced in fermentations with malt contaminated with trichothecenes BABT

In order to study the influence of mycotoxins on the production of alcohols, a fermentative process on a laboratorial scale was simulated. Malt was contaminated with deoxynivalenol and T-2 in different ratios (up to 500 ppb), according to a 3² factorial design, and the alcohols obtained after the fermentation were determined through gas chromatography. The results showed that trichothecenes influenced the profile of the alcohols produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae during the fermentative process of malt, especially the profile of methyl and isoamyl alcohols.
