Assessing the impact of different management options using ISIS-Fish*: the French Merluccius merluccius Nephrops norvegicus mixed fishery of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Drouineau, Hilaire; Mahevas, Stephanie; Pelletier, Dominique; Beliaeff, Benoit.
In this paper, we present an approach to compare the impact of different management options oil the dynamics of a mixed fishery. We used ISIS-Fish, a simulation tool aimed at evaluating the impact of spatial and seasonal management measures on the dynamics of mixed fisheries. The French Nephrops norvegicus (Norway lobster) Merluccius merluccius (hake) mixed fishery of the Bay of Biscay was chosen as a Study case. First, we parameterised the Population and exploitation models. We then selected several management measures, including marine protected fishermen's reaction to each measure. Then, a sensitivity analysis (MPAs) and total allowable catches (TAC), and parameterised fish sensitivity analysis was performed according to a fractional factorial...

Une évaluation des performances économiques de la pêche côtière : le cas de la région Bretagne ArchiMer
Le Floc H, Pascal; Thebaud, Olivier; Boncoeur, Jean; Daures, Fabienne; Guyader, Olivier.
Fishing activities have a significant role in socio-economic base for a few coastal areas. In this respect, fleets operating mainly in coastal fisheries deserve a special interest due to their narrow links with the home base. However, coastal fleet activities are not very known, restricting the capacity to deliver a diagnosis on their economic viability. This article suggests an assessment of the influence and the economic performance of the coastal fleets in Brittany. Results show similar economic performances for coastal units compared to offshore units. Furthermore, coastal units own additional advantages in relation to their energy consumption and capacity to operate without public subsidies. However, there are vulnerable to fishing effort of offshore...

Fishing effects and life history traits: a case study comparing tropical versus temperate tunas ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Fonteneau, Alain.
This study aims to test whether exploitation affects tunas and tuna-like species displaying contrasting life history traits similarly. We first collected information on life history of 10 commercial Atlantic species and then compared this information using multivariate analysis. On one hand, tropical tunas are characterised by small to medium size, rapid growth, early age-at-maturity, long spawning duration and short life span. These species, therefore, display a rapid turnover, characteristic of r-selected species. On the other hand, temperate tunas display differing life history traits, i.e., large size, slow growth, late age-at-maturity, short spawning duration and long life span. The turnover of these species is slow and present characteristics similar...

Spatially explicit fisheries simulation models for policy evaluation ArchiMer
Pelletier, Dominique; Mahevas, Stephanie.
This paper deals with the design of modelling tools suitable for investigating the consequences of alternative policies on the dynamics of resources and fisheries, such as the evaluation of marine protected areas (MPA). We first review the numerous models that have been developed for this purpose, and compare them from several standpoints: population modelling, exploitation modelling and management measure modelling. We then present a generic fisheries simulation model, Integration of Spatial Information for FISHeries simulation (ISIS-Fish). This spatially explicit model allows quantitative policy screening for fisheries with mixed-species harvests. It may be used to investigate the effects of combined management scenarios including a variety of policies:...

ISIS-Fish, a generic and spatially explicit simulation tool for evaluating the impact of management measures on fisheries dynamics ArchiMer
Mahevas, Stephanie; Pelletier, Dominique.
Assessing the impact of management scenarii on multi-species multi-fleet fisheries requires spatially and seasonally explicit simulation tools. No such tools are currently available in fisheries science. This paper presents a software that evaluates the impact of management measures on the dynamics of a complex fishery. The simulation model is generic in order to be used for different types of fisheries. Existing knowledge about each fishery is stored in a database included in the software, and may be easily modified. This includes the parameters describing each population and each fishing activity. Furthermore, the software allows for flexibility in several model assumptions. Both management measures and behaviour of fishermen in reaction to these...
