Genetic diversity of Morato's Digger Toad, Proceratophrys moratoi: spatial structure, gene flow, effective size and the need for differential management strategies of populations Genet. Mol. Biol.
Arruda,Mauricio P.; Costa,William P.; Recco-Pimentel,Shirlei M..
Abstract The Morato's Digger Toad, Proceratophrys moratoi, is a critically endangered toad species with a marked population decline in southern Brazilian Cerrado. Despite this, new populations are being discovered, primarily in the northern part of the distribution range, which raises a number of questions with regard to the conservation status of the species. The present study analyzed the genetic diversity of the species based on microsatellite markers. Our findings permitted the identification of two distinct management units. We found profound genetic structuring between the southern populations, on the left margin of the Tietê River, and all other populations. A marked reduction was observed in the contemporary gene flow among the central populations...

Population structure enhances perspectives on regional management of the western Indian Ocean green turtle ArchiMer
Bourjea, Jerome; Mortimer, Jeanne A.; Garnier, Julie; Okemwa, Gladys; Godley, Brendan J.; Hughes, George; Dalleau, Mayeul; Jean, Claire; Ciccione, Stephane; Muths, Delphine.
To refine our understanding of the spatial structure of the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) populations in the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO), we analysed patterns of mitochondrial DNA (396 base pairs control region fragment) variation among 171 samples collected at five distinct locations (Kenya, Northern Mozambique, and three locations in the Republic of Seychelles: the Granitic, Amirantes, and Farquhar groups) and compared them to genetic data (n = 288), previously collected from 10 southern locations in the SWIO. We also analysed post-nesting satellite tracks (n = 4) from green turtles nesting in the Amirantes group. Pairwise comparisons of haplotype frequencies showed significant genetic differentiation amongst rookeries and suggest that the SWIO hosts...

Population genetic structure and body shape assessment of Pagrus pagrus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Perciformes: Sparidae) from the Buenos Aires coast of the Argentine Sea Neotropical Ichthyology
Porrini,Leonardo P.; Iriarte,Pedro J. Fernández; Iudica,Celia M.; Abud,Eddie Aristizabal.
This study highlights the analysis of the morphological and genetic variation of the common sea bream Pagrus pagrus, and compares its two main areas of concentration: the northern (35ºS - 38ºS) and the southern areas (39ºS - 41ºS) of the Buenos Aires coast of the Argentine Sea. Body shape characterization presented two significantly different morphotypes (Wilks' Lambda=0.224, P<0.001). Northern individuals displayed a higher middle area while southern ones were smaller and their caudal peduncle was shorter. The northern and southern areas did not yield significant genetic differences either with the control region or the microsatellite loci, revealing that P. pagrus is not genetically structured. However, individuals from these areas should not be...

POLICY IMPLICATIONS ON THE REDUCTION OF NITROGEN FERTILIZER USE ON NON-IRRIGATED CORN-WINTER WHEAT PRODUCTION IN NORTH ALABAMA AgEcon
Joseph, Barbara A.; Jones, Hezekiah; Befecadu, Joseph.
Environmental and economic effects of nitrogen fertilizer reduction on North Alabama small farms are evaluated using GPFARM. GPFARM incorporates climate, soil data and management practices to simulate science and economic analysis for a farm/ranch management unit. Nitrate leaching, crop yield and profitability are evaluated and presented under different policy scenarios. Key words: nitrate leaching, profitability, management unit, GPFARM
Tipo: Conference Paper or Presentation Palavras-chave: Nitrate leaching; Profitability; Management unit; GPFARM; Crop Production/Industries.
