A study to estimate the relative importance of mangrove primary carbon and nitrogen sources to five commercial penaeid shrimps species was done at Saco da Inhaca, a non-estuarine mangrove-fringed bay on Inhaca Island, southern Mozambique. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were determined in a variety of primary producers (mangroves, epiphytes, phytoplankton and seagrasses), sediments and in five penaeid shrimp species (Penaeus (Fenneropenaeus) indicus, P. japonicus, P. semisulcatus, Metapenaeus monoceros and M. stebbingi), collected within the bay in different habitats and during two different periods. The penaeid shrimps showed 13C values ranging from â 13 to â 19 â °, (average of â 15.6 ± 0.4 â °, n=19) which is highly enriched compared to... |

The effects of habitat characteristics (mangrove creek, sandflat, mudflat and seagrass meadow) water salinity, temperature, and depth on the density, spatial distribution and size distribution of juveniles of five commercially important penaied shrimp species (Metapenaus monoceros, M. stebbingi, Fenneropenaeus indicus, Penaeus japonicus and P. semisulcatus) were investigated during a high shrimp recruitment peak lasting from January to June 2002, in four contiguous habitats within a non-estuarine mangrove bay at Saco da Inhaca, Inhaca Island, Southern Mozambique. A total of 14,976 specimens representing the five species were collected by means of a 1m beam-trawl fitted with a 2 mm mesh net with a cod-end. Every two weeks corresponding with spring tides on... |

The value of mangrove ecosystems and the wide variety of useful functions that they perform have been well documented (Turner, 1977; Robertson, 1986; Singh, 1987; Bailey, 1988). For marine fishes especially, and many aquatic organisms, mangrove provide spawning, nursery and forage grounds for post larvae and juveniles (Weistein, 1979; Shenker and Dean, 1979; Robertson and Duke, 1987; Sasekumar et al., 1992). The dependence of juveniles of many marine species on mangrove ecosystems is attributed to their higher productivity as compared to adjacent marine areas (Robertson, 1986). Mc Hugh (1966) estimated that approximately two thirds of commercially important fishes depend on estuarine habitats for the growth of their young. In fact, good correlation has... |

Uca annulipes (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) is probably the most abundant brachyuran crab inhabiting mangrove forests in East Africa. However, its fecundity is poorly understood. Crabs were randomly sampled during spring low tides from January to April 2002 at Costa do Sol mangrove, Maputo Bay, southern Mozambique. Carapace width (CW), abdomen width (AW), weight (W) and egg numbers (EN) were recorded. The average fecundity was 1599 ± 842 eggs, ranging from 529 (CW = 5.0 mm) to 4250 (CW = 24.1 mm) eggs respectively. Egg number increased significantly with increase in crab size. This information contributes to our knowledge of the reproductive potential and the reproductive processes occurring in this species of crab. |

Crassostrea gasar, the mangrove oyster and the surrounding fish farm water were examined microbiologically. The aim was to determine the bacterial load and level of contamination. Oysters were collected from the experimental fish farm of the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and marine Research, with its water source from the Lagos Lagoon. The oysters were discovered to be contaminated, with the Coliform/Eschericia coli counts in the range of 56/100g to above 1,800/100g for samples collected. Salmonellla pathogen was present and the counts were in the range of 3.10 x 102 to 1.99 x 106 per gram. The total viable becteria counts were in the range of 3.18 x 102 to 2.20 x 106 per gram. Analysis of the farm water revealed a positive correlation in... |
