The role of astaxanthin in shrimp pigmentation ArchiMer
Latscha, T.
Carotenoids are exogenously derived isoprenoid compounds which are responsible for pigmentation in crustaceans. While implants and bacteria are able to synthesize these carotenoids de novo, shrimps like other animals entirely depend on their dietary supply. The major carotenoid found in most crustacean tissues and responsible, e.g. for the typical colour of penaeids is astaxanthin. With increasing industrialization in shrimp farming there is a growing demand for synthetic, nature-identical carotenoids, not only for pigmentation, but also for the maintenance of growth and fertility.

ArchiMer
Le Foll, Anne.
The study of the crab Cancer pagurus , along the Brittany coast, has revealed new information about its movements, growth and reproduction. The 1439 crab tagging has been effected either on land using the Edwards technique "suture-tag" or onboard using a similar technique to the Gundersen method of "toggle-tag". The results confirm that males are relatively sedentary, the females migrate more. To estimate growth, the author used the "capture-recapture" method and the results from crab rearing. It appeared that the molt increment is not constant and generally, so the molt frequency, it percentage decreases when the size increases.

A review of the known hosts geographical range and current diagnostic procedures for the virus diseases of cultured penaeid shrimp ArchiMer
Lightner, D; Bell, T; Redman, R.
At least six virus diseases are presently known in cultured penaeid shrimp. Each of these six penaeid virus diseases (BP = Baculovirus penaei ; MBV = Penaeus monodon -type baculovirus (including PBV of Australian penaeids); BMN = baculoviral midgut gland necrosis; HPV = hepatopancreatic parvo-like virus; IHHNV = infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus; and REO = reo-like virus of the hepatopancreas) may be comprised by a multitude of individual strains, some of which are highly pathogenic to some penaeids, while being of little importance to others.

A brief review of nutritional studies for Penaeus monodon ArchiMer
Liao, I; Liu, F.
In order to develop effective formulated for Penaeus monodon , sufficient information is needed on its nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, research on this area has been very limited. This paper outlines the results of such research. Since data on the nutritional requirements of P. japonicus are relatively well established, some of these data are also reviewed in this paper and are used as a basis for assessing the nutritional requirements of P. monodon . Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, mineral and vitamin requirements are evaluated from the parameters of growth survival and feed efficiency. Studies on the effects of enzymes and the development of microparticulate diet for larvae are also summarized.

ArchiMer
Ultrastructural changes of the chorion were studied in prehydrated Artemia cysts. After incubation for 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours, in hygrostats (under controlled relative humidity, that range from 19% to 99%), the authors observed in cysts that were maintained (for at least 48 h in 99% of relative humidity, some chorionic alveoli containing electron dense structures. They presume that ions and/or molecules migrate during prehydration from inside the cyst to the alveolar layer.

ArchiMer
El Gharbi, Salwa; Rousset, Viviane; Raibaut, André.
Lernaeenicus sprattae is a blood-feeding copepod parasite of the pilchard, Sardian pilchardus . The larval stages of L. sprattae attach to the skin or the fins of the larval fish when the fish enter the lagoons. The mature, and in some cases ovigerous females of L.sprattae seek out the base of the fins or directly implant in the eye of juvenile or adult pilchards. The copepod has a particularly serious effect at the site of infection: its feeding has a severe effect on the fish. The pilchard returns to its breeding grounds in the open sea at the end of summer; this migration allows the copepod to complete its reproductive cycle and a new cycle of infestation is able to begin.

Protein requirements of Penaeid shrimp. ArchiMer
Kanazawa, A.
Proteins are indispensable nutrients for growth and maintenance of live of all animals. The optimum protein levels in diets for shrimps are different among the various species. Squid meal is an effective protein source for many penaeids. The effects of dietary protein, lipid, and carbohydrate levels on the growth and survival of larvae of Penaeus japonicus were examined by feeding trials using purified diet with carrageenan as a binder. As a result, the effects of protein levels on growth and survival of P. japonicus larvae varied with dietary carbohydrate levels but not dietary lipid levels.

Enrichment of live foods. ArchiMer
Watanabe, T.
Live foods such rotifers and Artemia are still indispensable for mass propagation of larval fish. At present, more than 20 fish and crustacean species are mass produced in Japanese governmental fish farming centres and private hatcheries. Fry are either released into the coastal areas or used for commercial cultivation. This culture technology is rapidly developing with new species being introduced each year and larval rearing is increasingly identified as the number one constraint. Artemia is used most extensively, particularly for the mass production of Kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus .

Vitamin requirements of juvenile penaeid shrimp ArchiMer
Conklin, D.
The results of supplementing crustacean feeds with vitamins are examined specifically from the standpoint of shrimp culture. Micro-nutrients selected for discussion include: water-soluble vitamins of the B-complex, choline and inositol, vitamin C and the fat-soluble group of vitamins: A, D, E and K. Ways in which utilization of vitamins and ultimately dietary demand are altered by physiological state, conditions of culture, as well as factors which impact on feed levels, are explored.

In search of standardisation: A comparison of toxicity bioassays on two marine crustaceans (Palaemon serratus and Tigriopus brevicornis). ArchiMer
Le Dean, Loic; Devineau, J.
In order to mitigate the insufficiency of the number of currently available toxicity tests in marine middle, two studies on the effects of cadmium and zinc were carried through with two marine crustaceans: the prawn Palaemon serratus and a copepoda Tigriopus brevicornis. The comparison of methodologies (rearing conditions - experimental procedure) and results obtained allowed to show the advantages and the disadvantages of these two tests in order to consider a standardization.

Ayari-Akari, A.; Nasri-Ammar, K..

OceanDocs
Parra, A..
