Performance of juvenile mojarra supplied with feed containing varying levels of crude protein Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Souza,Ricardo Henrique Bastos de; Magalhães Júnior,Francisco Oliveira de; Cipriano,Filipe dos Santos; Lima,Kauana Santos; Takishita,Sylvia Sanae; Braga,Luís Gustavo Tavares.
ABSTRACT The growth of the Brazilian aquaculture has stimulated the development of the productive chain of native species, including marine environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth performance of juvenile mojarra fish (Diapterus rhombeus) fed diets containing different concentrations of crude protein (32, 36, 40 and 44 g 100 g-1). The 80 juvenile mojarra (7.2±1.5 g) were kept in 16 circular tanks (150 L). The study design used was completely randomized with four treatments and four repetitions. The fish were fed four times a day. At the end of the experiment (60 days) the final weight, feed intake, weight gain (WG), feed:gain ratio (FGR), protein efficiency rate (PER), energy efficiency rate, specific growth, survival rate and,...

The Mediterranean region is of fundamental importance to Europe given its strategic position. The responsibility for its overall ecosystem integrity is shared by European Union Member States (EU-MS) and other Mediterranean countries. A juxtaposition of overlapping governance instruments occurred recently in the region, with the implementation of both the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) for EU-MS and the Ecosystem Approach Strategy (ECAP) for all Mediterranean countries, including EU-MS. Both MSFD and ECAP are structured around vision-driven processes to achieve Good Environmental Status and a Healthy Environment, respectively. These processes have clear ecosystem-based, integrated policy objectives to guarantee the preservation and integrity of...

New coastal and marine management strategies have recently been developed in many countries and regions. From an ecosystem approach perspective, the aim of such strategies is the maintenance of ecosystem integrity while enabling the sustainable use of ecosystem goods and services. There is, however, a need for harmonized definitions and standardized processes to deal not only with the interjurisdictional and multidisciplinary complexities that are associated with such strategies but also with the extensive timelines and resources implicated in the planning and implementation of these strategies. The ecosystem-based management system proposed here is based on three pillars that facilitate the integration of an ecosystem approach to coastal and oceans policy...

Diagnostic de la contamination chimique de la faune halieutique des littoraux des Antilles françaises. Campagnes 2008 en Martinique et en Guadeloupe ArchiMer
Bertrand, Jacques; Abarnou, Alain; Bocquene, Gilles; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Reynal, Lionel.
During the years 1972-1993, kepone a persistent pesticide has been used in the banana fields of the French West Indies (Martinique and Guadeloupe) to content a weevil. A slow desorption of the molecule from soil induces its transfer to the sea through the rivers from leaching and erosion. This study intended to take stock on the contamination by kepone of the fishery species around the islands fifteen years after the kepone ban. Furthermore other chemical pollutants were sought in fish and shellfish around the Martinique island. The results confirmed persistence of marine fauna contamination by kepone, mainly in the alluvium areas in front of polluted rivers. They shown also that this contamination may spread more widely but with fast decreasing through...

Impact de l'aquaculture marine sur l'environnement : aspects juridiques et économiques ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe.
Aquaculture is an economic activity which is characterised by a great dependence on environmental conditions. Therefore aquaculture development is subdued to institutional context which defines the rules for use and conservation of the environment. This paper analyses the impact of marine environment regulations on economic operating of aquaculture enterprises and on industrial dynamics. Because aquaculture enterprises use a collective good, an economic approach of aquaculture has to take into account not only the relations between enterprises and environment, but also the relations between the enterprises themselves, through production externalities. In this study, several economic tools are considered in order to incite enterprises to integrate pad of...

Surveillance du milieu marin et protection santiaire des coquillages ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan.
Shellfish farming is a major economic activity in the European Union, France being one of the main producing countries. Regulations were introduced to meet society's current expectations in terms of food safety at the fishing, farming and harvesting stages, as weil as during processing and marketing. Toxic algae, pathogens or pollutants may contaminate shellfish products during production and harvesting, partly because of the particular environ mental conditions in which these animais are grown. Monitoring programmes were thus deve/oped to detect the presence of biological and chemical contaminants in coastal waters and in shellfish, and to monitor the food safety of the latter.

La pisciculture marine : un secteur industriel en émergence ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe; Harache, Yves.
In a general context of low progression, European aquaculture has been characterized by the development of intensive fish farming. The most notable fact is the recent increase in intensive salmonid farming, with a turnover of almost two million ECU. More recently, the intensive farming of sea bass and sea bream has increased very rapidly in the Mediterranean Basin, although on a more reduced extent. Although research has started as soon as the seventies with a strong public incentive both for salmon, sea bass and sea bream, the development of these different types of aquaculture has not been done at the same pace. Some elements of sectorial dynamics are analysed such as research planning and financing, organization of the production and public policy. For...

Surveillance écologique et halieutique des sites de centrales nucléaires littorales : évaluation et perspectives ArchiMer
Quintin, Jean-yves; Bordet, F.
Electricité de France (EDF) has asked Institut Français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer (IFREMER) to monitor the coastal marine environment and its living resources around nuclear power plants along the French coast. Started in 1974, these investigations were undertaken in the areas of Gravelines, Le Blayais, Paluel, Flamanville, and Penly; the objective is to detect any impact of the open-circuit water cooling system, as well as any differences in the marine environment itself. To examine this question, IFREMER has set up a program called Impact des Grands Aménagements (IGA). It has evolved according to the results obtained and now integrates the specificity of each site in a global program common to all. The nature and the problems of impact...

La surveillance des phycotoxines dans les coquillages du milieu marin. Le réseau REPHY : objectifs, stratégies, et principaux résultats ArchiMer
Belin, Catherine.
The surveillance of phycotoxins in marine shellfish. The REPHY network: objectives, strategies and primary results One of the objectives of REPHY (network for phytoplankton and phycotoxin surveillance) is to monitor toxin-producing micro-algae species in the marine environment that are likely to accumulate in seafood products, and to screen for these toxins in shellfish. This surveillance is undertaken in the framework of the European regulations. Three groups of toxins are thus monitored and are associated with three genera of toxic phytoplankton: (i) Dinophysis, a producer of the okadaic acid (with diarrhoeic effects) and pectenotoxin families of toxins; in the same group of so-called “lipophilic toxins”, two other families of regulated toxins are...

Etude ecologique des vibrions du bassin d'Arcachon ArchiMer
Marchand, Michel.
Water and sediment samples monthly collected from Arcachon Bay (Gironde, France) were examined during three years for the presence of marine vibrios. V. cholerae serotype 01 was never detected. On the other hand, the Eyre River and mouth contain non-agglutinating V. cholerae (127 strains) principally in water. The low temperatures slow their development down without stopping it completely. V. parahaemolyticus (257 strains) present in the same areas is particularly isolated from water when the aquatic medium temperature rises to 15 degree C. V. alginolyticus (638 strains) settles the whole Bay, except the river, in any season. The low temperatures promote growth of V. metschnikovii (203 strains) very tolerant towards salinity. V. anguillarum (46 strains)...

Défis de la surveillance des maladies chez les coquillages marins en France ArchiMer
Lupo, Coralie; Francois, Cyrille; Arzul, Isabelle; Garcia, Celine; Joly, Jean-pierre; Renault, Tristan.
The basic concepts and objectives of animal disease surveillance are common to all types of animal production. Yet, the procedures for implementation have been mostly developed for terrestrial animal productions. Disease surveillance in marine shellfish calls for specific measures in view of the peculiarities of marine biology and rearing techniques. The main objective of disease surveillance in marine shellfish is to detect as early as possible exotic and newly emerging diseases. With this objective in mind, a national surveillance network for surveillance of mollusc diseases called Repamo has been developed. It combines passive reporting and risk-based surveillance.

Climatic trends in continental shelf waters off Ghana and in the Gulf of Guinea, 1963-1992 ArchiMer
Koranteng, Ka; Mcglade, Jm.
Using time series analyses, some physical parameters of the continental shelf waters of the Gulf of Guinea were examined. Analysis of coastal sea surface temperatures from Ghana and Ivory Coast, and offshore sea surface temperatures from the Gulf of Guinea clearly shows spatial and inter-annual patterns of cooling in coastal waters of West Africa. The behaviour of the decomposed trend of coastal and offshore sea surface temperatures, sub-surface: temperature measured at 100 m depth off Ghana and salinity showed that the observational period (1963-1992) could be divided into three climatic periods: the period before 1972, from 1972 to 1982, and the period after 1982. In the first period, sea surface temperature at both coastal and offshore areas and bottom...

La pollution chimique marine. Quelles politiques pour une protection durable de l'océan et des mers côtières ? ArchiMer
Marchand, Michel.
The coastal marine environment presents some specificity compared to other aquatic environments: it is both the receiving end of pollution on land and the most biologically rich marine area, where are developing many uses (fisheries and aquaculture, salt production, tourism, thalassotherapy). The coastal zone is therefore vulnerable to chronic chemical pollution and its protection requires research, monitoring and regulation. A dual strategy can be put into place: a preventive approach to avoid placing on the market of toxic substances to humans and the environment, and a retrospective approach based on public policies for the protection and restoration of degraded aquatic environments.

Présence d'un Protogonyaulax sp. sur le littoral atlantique français pendant l'hiver 1987 ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Bardouil, Michele.
A dinoflagellate belonging to Protogonyaulax genera and forming more than 20 cells chains was observed from November 1987 to February 1988 in Vilaine Bay and in the west ofIle d'Yeu (France). This species was not detected in coastal phytoplankton during preceding surveys. Close to Protogonyaulax affinis it seems to be a winter developing species for this coastal area. Vertical distribution shows in december a migration of the patch towards deeper layers. Increasing occurrences of species belonging to Protogonyaulax (Alexandrium Balech) genera inshore or coastal waters need to pay more attention to the taxonomy of such organisms. Some species are effectively well known as poisons producers.
