Three successive generations were produced between 2001 and 2003 to assess to what extent genetic variability exists for survival in juvenile oysters Crassostrea gigas. For each generation, two groups were selected for their high ("R" for resistant) and low ("S" for susceptible) survival. Significant differences in mortality were observed during the first year in Riviere d'Auray (RA) (Brittany-France). However, low and similar mortality were observed for both groups, with no significant difference between groups in the first and second generation in this site, where the first summer is the critical, sensitive period with a clear age effect. In Baie des Veys (BDV) (Normandie-France), where mortalities usually mainly affect adults, mortality between groups,... |

Breathing exchanges of Pinna nobilis L. are studied in situ and in the laboratory with two methods. First method consist in introducing samples of Pinna under a 40l plexiglass bell equipped with haps. The bell is positionned by diving. The consumption of oxygen is observed with water samples and the oxygen concentration is measured with an electronic oxymeter. Experiments which are carried out during nycthemeral cycles are reproduced in the laboratory with the same type of bell. A second method carry into effect an apparatus more sophisticated, who put into circulation a current of water in an airtight thermostated cellule, where a specimen of young Pinna is introduced. This sample is gradually adaptated to the conditions of the medium. Breathing... |

In order to estimate energetic relationship, microphytic and benthic bivalve levels of a shallow (1.5 m), sandy ecosystem near Marseille (Gulf of Fos, Southern France) were sampled monthly during 1.5 year, in two sites differing by their wave exposure. In the sheltered area, the bivalve Ruditapes decussatus was the dominant species, while another bivalve, Donax trunculus , was found in the open, wave exposed site. Chlorophyll a and primary production of the phytoplankton and the microphytobenthos, as well as population dynamic, growth and biochemical composition of bivalves (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) were monitored. |

With about 800 Recent species, 'miters' are a widely distributed group of tropical and subtropical gastropods that are most diverse in the Indo-West Pacific. They include the two families Mitridae and Costellariidae, similar in shell morphology and traditionally treated as close relatives. Some genera of deep-water Ptychatractidae and Volutomitridae are close to miters in shell morphology, and the term 'mitriform gastropods' has been introduced to refer to Mitridae, Costellariidae, and this assortment of convergent forms. The present study aimed at the reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships of mitriform gastropods based on representative taxon sampling. Four genetic markers [cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), 16S and 12S rRNA mitochondrial genes,... |

An investigation was carried out into the PAH chemical contamination resulting from the "Erika" tanker fuel spillage of December 1999 along the French coast of the Bay of Biscay. A qualitative and quantitative assessment was conducted of this contamination in water, suspended particulate matter, sediments, and in intertidal molluscs. The chemical composition of PAHs in pre-spill and post-spill samples was determined and used to distinguish the "Erika's" fuel as the source of PAHs in the coastal environment of the Bay of Biscay. Changes in concentrations of PAHs were also assessed. The GC-MS analysis made it possible to identify and quantify parent unsubstituted PAHs, alkyl-substituted PAHs (C-PAH) and sulfur heterocycle unsubstituted and alkyl substituted... |

The study of tinctorial affinities, in vitro behaviour and ultrastructure of the hemocytes of Pinna nobilis allows us to group them into two main families: basophilic, neutrophilic and acidophilic granulocytes; hyalinocytes, three categories can be distinguished among these cells: small hyalinocytes, hyalinocytes containing smooth endoplasmic reticulum and the macrophage population. The hemocytes participate in the regulation of metabolism by the storage and degradation of glycogen. They contribute to the detoxification process by the sequestration of mineral elements in their lysosomes. Their role in antibacterial defense is suggested by their bacterian phagocytic activity. |
