In vitro test-based comparison of pesticide-induced sensitivity in marine and freshwater phytoplankton ArchiMer
Arzul, Genevieve; Quiniou, Francoise; Carrie, Cecile.
This study aims to assess the effects of two pesticides, namely the insecticide carbofuran and the herbicide isoproturon, on monospecifically cultivated marine and freshwater phytoplankton according to standard methods. In the presence of pesticide, growth rates were lower in marine species Chaetoceros gracilis and Phaeodactylum tricornutum than in freshwater species Chlorella vulgaris and Selenastrum capricornutum after 72 hours. The EC50 values were obtained with the REGTOX Macro software, and the NEC values by applying the DEBtox model.

The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by marine phytoplankton ArchiMer
Wong, Gtf; Dunstan, Wm; Kim, Db.
All nine species of marine phytoplankton tested (a cyanobacterium: Synechococcus sp., three diatoms: Chaetoceros simplex, Thalassiosira oceanica and Skeletonema costatum, two prymnesiophytes: Pleurochrysis carterae and Isochrysis galbana, a prasinophyte: Tetraselmis sp., a green alga: Dunaliella tertiolecta, and a dinoflagellate: Amphidinium carterae) were able to decompose hydrogen peroxide in the dark. Since these phytoplankton species can be found widely in a variety of marine sub-environments, this indicates that the dark decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by phytoplankton is a general phenomenon in the oceans. The decomposition rates were first order with respect to the concentration of hydrogen peroxide and biomass. The second-order rate constants...

POTENTIALLY TOXIC DINOFLAGELLATES ASSOCIATED TO SEAGRASS ON ISLA DE BARÚ, COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN, DURING EL NIÑO 2015 Acta biol.Colomb.
RUIZ GÓMEZ,Anderson; MANCERA PINEDA,José Ernesto.
ABSTRACT In the last decades, harmful algal blooms (HAB) and toxic events such as ciguatera seem to have increased in frequency and intensity, negatively impacting human health, economy, and marine ecosystems. In Colombia, these events have caused a series of consequences ranging from the death of fish and birds to toxic effects on humans. Although some toxin-producing dinoflagellate species are common in the Caribbean, their dynamics are poorly understood, making the adoption of any regulations difficult. To determine the composition and abundance of dinoflagellates associated with seagrasses we collected 18 samples on Isla de Barú, during 2015. We found ten diatom genera and three dinoflagellate genera, Prorocentrum, Ostreopsis, and Gambierdiscus, that...
