Sediment pollution by metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Pb) in the Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Navarro-Martínez,Andrés; Vélez-Mendoza,Anubis; Vásquez,Nicolás Santos; Almario-García,Margui; Campos-Campos,Néstor Hernando; Sanjuan-Muñoz,Adolfo.
ABSTRACT Metals are pollutants released into the environment by anthropogenic and natural sources, and they can reach marine and coastal ecosystems through river discharge and atmospheric processes. In the Colombian Caribbean, the Magdalena and Sinú rivers introduce large quantities of sediments containing traces of multiple pollutants - including metals. This research aims to determine the metal contamination levels of marine sediments in two sectors of the Colombian Caribbean that are influenced by the Magdalena and Sinú Rivers. Sediments were collected using a dredge, and the concentration of metals was analyzed through atomic absorption spectrometry. In addition, granulometry analyses and organic matter determination were performed. The area of...

Presence of marine debris in mangrove forests with different degrees of anthropogenic intervention in the Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Arboleda,Ingrid; Molina,Andrés; Duque,Guillermo.
ABSTRACT Marine debris generates impacts on mangrove forest ecosystems that are vulnerable due to their morphological adaptations, which facilitate the deposition of floating materials. This study determined the variability in the abundance and types of marine debris in mangrove forests in relation to the degree of anthropogenic influence in Buenaventura Bay and Malaga Bay, located in the Colombian Pacific. Sampling was carried out in four mangrove forests, using transects and 1 m2 quadrats. Waste was classified based on OSPAR categories and plastic types were classified according to their use (tourism, household and others). Additionally, two indices were applied, the Clean Coast Index (CCI) and the Plastic Abundance Index (PAI). The highest number of...

The stormwater drain system as a pollution vector of the seashore in Fortaleza (Ceará State, Brazil) BJM
Vieira,Regine H.S.F.; Catter,Karla M.; Saker-Sampaio,Silvana; Rodrigues,Dália P.; Theophilo,Grace N.D.; Fonteles-Filho,Antonio A..
The aim of this study was to make a diagnosis of coastal pollution through bacteriological analysis of water taken from stormwater drain systems and the nearby seashore. The results were submitted to statistical analysis as to differences in the Most Probable Number (MPN) of fecal coliform (FC) found between the stormwater drain systems and adjacent seashore locations both at low and high tides. The main conclusions were: (a) most water samples collected from the stormwater systems presented MPN values for FC above 1,000 per 100 ml; (b) only 20% of the samples from the adjacent seashore presented MPN values for FC above 1,000 per 100 ml, a fact which may be explained by the distance between the drain system outlets and the actual seashore; (c) FC/100 ml...

An evaluation of surface micro- and mesoplastic pollution in pelagic ecosystems of the Western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Faur, Florian; Saini, Camille; Potter, Gael; Galgani, Francois; De Alencastro, Luiz Felippe; Hagmann, Pascal.
This study examines the distribution, abundance and characteristics of surface micro- and mesoplastic debris in the Western Mediterranean Sea. 41 samples were collected in 2011 (summer) and 2012 (summer). Results, firstly, revealed that micro- (<5mm) and mesoplastic debris were widely and uniformly distributed in this area with average concentrations of 130,000 parts/km(2) and 5700 parts/km(2), respectively. Importantly, a strong correlation between micro- and mesoplastic concentrations was identified. Secondly, a classification based on the shape and appearance of microplastics indicated the predominant presence of fragments (73 %) followed by thin films (14 %). Thirdly, the average mass ratio of microplastic to dry organic matter has been measured at...

The monitoring programme of the ecological and ecotoxicological consequences of the "Erika" oil spill ArchiMer
Laubier, Lucien; Le Moigne, Morgan; Flammarion, Patrick; Thybaud, Eric; Cossa, Daniel.
On December 11, 1999, Erika, an oil tanker flying the Maltese flag and loaded with 31 000 t of heavy fuel oil, was making its way from Dunkirk to Livorno when it encountered difficult weather conditions Southwest of the Brittany coast gale force winds 8 to 9 and 6 mwaves). On the morning of 12th December, the captain broadcast an SOS; his vessel was breaking in two, approximately 30 nautical miles to south of Penmarc'h Point (Fig. 1; Finistère, France). The fore section of the vessel sank during the night of the 12-13 December and the aft section was taken in tow on the morning December 13, but subsequently sank in the early afternoon. Both parts lay in 120 m of water and were located 10 km apart. Approximately, 19 000 t of heavy fuel oil were spilled into...

Accumulation and depuration of hydrocarbons in the mangrove oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae ArchiMer
Delcastillo, C; Corredor, J; Morell, J.
Adult specimens of Crassostrea rhizophorae were exposed to diesel oil dispersed in seawater. The experiment consisted of a 10 days contamination period and 15 days depuration period. Oyster samples were extracted, and analysed by gas chromatography and UV fluorescence spectroscopy. The concentrations of n-alkanes, branched alkanes, unresolved complex mixture (UCM) and aromatic hydrocarbons were determined. The oysters accumulated the hydrocarbons rapidly, reaching a maximum concentration of 387.5 ug/g (wet weight). After exposure to uncontaminated seawater, the oysters were able to reduce their hydrocarbon load to 5.6 ug/g. The data indicates that C. rhizophorae is capable of preferential accumulation and depuration of hydrocarbons. Apparently, the oysters...

Concentrations and origin of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments of the Middle Adriatic Sea ArchiMer
Mandic, Jelena; Pavela Vrancic, Maja.
A total of 208 polycyclic aromatic compounds and their substituted homologues were investigated on eight stations along Croatia-Italy transect in the Middle Adriatic. PAC concentrations were higher in the coastal area than in the open sea area. The highest PAC concentrations were measured in the vicinity of the industrial harbor of Split while the lowest concentrations were observed on stations located in the open sea area. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were dominant group of compounds on each investigated station with contributions in total PAC concentration of more than 85%. S-PAH concentrations were higher than O-PAH concentration in each sample and tend to decrease as the distance from the coast increased. Contributions of O-PAH in total PAC...

Bonnefont, J; Lelong, P; Martin, Y.
The authors studied survival of faecal coliform (decrease rate + T90) in experimental devices (closed or continuous flow systems) using various dilutions of urban sewage in sea-water. Survival appears to be high (T90 between 12 to 81 h). Dilution level of sewage and organic matter contents seems to be important to explain the decrease of faecal coliforms observed in these experiments.

Ostreopsis cf. ovata Bloom in Currais, Brazil: Phylogeny, Toxin Profile and Contamination of Mussels and Marine Plastic Litter ArchiMer
Tibiriçá, Carlos Eduardo J. A.; Leite, Isabel P.; Batista, Talita V. V.; Fernandes, Luciano F.; Chomérat, Nicolas; Herve, Fabienne; Hess, Philipp; Mafra, Luiz.
Ostreopsis cf. ovata is a toxic marine benthic dinoflagellate responsible for harmful blooms affecting ecosystem and human health, mostly in the Mediterranean Sea. In this study we report the occurrence of a summer O. cf. ovata bloom in Currais, a coastal archipelago located on the subtropical Brazilian coast (~25° S). This bloom was very similar to Mediterranean episodes in many aspects: (a) field-sampled and cultivated O. cf. ovata cells aligned phylogenetically (ITS and LSU regions) along with Mediterranean strains; (b) the bloom occurred at increasing temperature and irradiance, and decreasing wind speed; (c) cell densities reached up to 8.0 × 104 cell cm−2 on fiberglass screen and 5.6 × 105 cell g−1 fresh weight on seaweeds; (d) and toxin profiles...

Etude des liens trophiques au sein d'une communaute bacterienne selectionnee a partir d'un sediment marin sur le cyclohexene-4 dicarboximide-1,2 (THPI) ArchiMer
Terrom, G; Gil, G; Lepetit, J.
A bacterial community has been selected from a marine sediment on 4-cyclohexene-1,2 dicarboximide or THPI (fungicide). This community consists of nine strains. The "principal" strain, Photobacterium mandapamensis , degrades THPI by different metabolic pathways many of which require co-oxidative sequences. The other eight "auxiliary" strains occur at different states along the trophic chain formed by the "principal" strain, so increasing velocity and intensity of the THPI biodegradation.

Depuration of copper nitrate and chloride in the Indian brown mussel Perna indica ArchiMer
Kondajii, N; Menon, N.
It is understood that the rate of bioaccumulation and subsequent depuration of heavy metals in marine animals is influenced by the chemical state, as well as the kinetics of transformation between different species of chemical salts dissolved in water. The Indian Brown mussel, Perna indica, was exposed to copper nitrate and chloride, individually, to analyse the rate of accumulation, depuration, oxygen uptake and filtration rates. When supplied in very low quantities, environmentally realistic concentrations, the rate of accumulation of copper nitrate and chlorides showed variations. When the animals were transferred to sea water, these two salts did not show any clear cut differences in the depuration rate. Irrespective of the previous accumulation...

Variations metaboliques des communautes bacteriennes lors d'une pollution par petrole brut, avec ou sans traitement ArchiMer
Cauchi, B.
Metabolic potentialities of bacterial communities in marine water after Crude Oil pollution (Arabian Light) and in marine water after pollution and treatment (enrichment: Inipol EAP 22) have been studied and compared. With data analysis: regressions, hierarchical ascending classification and multifactor correspondence analysis, the treatment gives rise to conservation and one increase of enzymatic pool (second day) of the bacterial sample as a combined metabolic homogeneity contrary to pollution impact. The direct assimilation of hydrocarbons looks more regular and slow without treatment.

La Baie de Seine: Peuplements et especes benthiques en regime perturbe ArchiMer
Cabioch, L; Retiere, C.
The waters of the Seine River are polluted by urban, industrial and agricultural effluents. In addition direct industrial wastes inputs are emptied into the estuary. Within the limits of the Seine Bay program it was not possible to research pollution impacts on every estuarine ecosystem link; so only benthos have been studied. To take time response of organisms into account, the authors have defined indicators or quantitative evaluation of parameters, reflecting physiological state. They have studied population fluctuations caused by natural or man induced effects.
