Introduction : "The occurrence of pathogenic microorganisms in seawater or in shellfish could exist anytime sewage from human or animal origin would be discharged to the coast" (Metcalf, 1982). According to the diseases occurring in the human population or in animals, pathogens might be present in recreational waters or in shellfish. Present thesis focuses on ecology of assemblages and taxonomy of free-living marine nematodes. Most of the data are from Cienfuegos, a semi-enclosed bay in the Caribbean Sea; but, we also provided data on biodiversity from other areas in Cuban marine waters. Four main topics are included: description of biodiversity patterns, a microcosm experiment about effects of organic enrichment on assemblages, a taxonomic revision of the genus Terschellingia de Man, 1888, and the description of four new genera for science. |

Se analizaron un total de 58 muestras en La Libertad y 54 muestras de agua marina costera en Manta durante el evento La Niña 1999-2000. Se elaboraron mapas de distribución de clorofila a, y la relación con los parámetros físicos y químicos. Las condiciones físicas durante el desarrollo del evento La Niña 1999-2000, no siguieron un patrón definido, sino que han presentado características particulares para cada región del Océano Pacífico Sur. En Ecuador se observó que la productividad biológica aumentó considerablemente en La Libertad durante el año 2000 existiendo la presencia de afloramientos con núcleos de clorofila a, altas concentraciones celulares e incremento de la abundancia relativa de importantes especies de diatomeas. |
