The objective of this paper was to verify the concentration of the sugar cane agro-industry in the Minas Gerais State after the sectorial deregulation. The results (CR4 and CR8,...

Evidence for increasing concentration in plant breeding industries in the United States and the European Union AgEcon
Nolan, Elizabeth; Santos, Paulo.
There is evidence of an increase in market concentration and in the importance of private plant breeding in the seed industry following the widespread adoption of Intellectual Property Rights regimes for the industry in the developed world. We use data from the US Patent and Trademark Office, US Plant Variety Protection Office and various European Plant Variety Protection databases to estimate the extent of these changes in the seed corn industry.

Competition and Car Longevity AgEcon
Hamilton, Bruce W.; MacAuley, Molly K..
We examine determinants of the nearly 30 percent increase in the average age of domestically produced, registered automobiles since the mid-1960s. We find that very little of the increase in car longevity is attributable to improvements in the inherent durability of cars. Rather, we find that the temporal pattern of longevity improvement is highly correlated with the level of market concentration in the auto industry. In particular, we argue that the arrival of competition in the industry led to an increase in longevity largely by forcing a reduction in the price of auto maintenance and repair, which in turn induced consumers to maintain their cars into older age.

Antitrust analysis of supermarkets: global concerns playing out in local markets AgEcon
Cotterill, Ronald W..
This paper reviews the basic components of antitrust analysis for the supermarket industry, including definition of product and geographic markets and the measurement of market power. The analysis of prices and profits in a market structure context remains important, especially in countries such as Australia with very high supermarket concentration. Firm and brand level New Empirical Industrial Organisation models of demand and oligopoly pricing also provide insights for evaluating antitrust claims. Recent research on vertical pricing games and price transmission expand the analysis to market channel pricing issues, including coalescing power by supermarkets and food manufacturers. The issues and approaches explained in this paper are relevant for...

Market Concentration of the Processed Food in Korea AgEcon
Kim, Sounghun.
In Korea, processed food markets have various shapes of structure: the markets of ice cream, special dietary food, noodles, sugar are highly concentrated, while the markets of gimchi, pickles, and ice are not very concentrated. The level of market concentration changes over time. These market structures and structural changes cause impacts on related industries as well as own industries. For the more successful policies, the paper suggests three ideas: to realize that each food processing industry has a different industry structure, to understand the relationship between the food processing industry and upstream and downstream industries and to take into account opinions from various sources before adopting new policies.

CONCENTRATION AND MERGERS IN U.S. WHOLESALE GROCERY MARKETS AgEcon
Connor, John M..
This report analyzes a large sample of U.S. grocery warehouse operators in 54 well defined grocery marketing areas. Almost all grocer retail chains with more than 40 supermarkets and $500 million in retail sales in 1990 are vertically integrated into wholesaling. More than four-fifths of the market areas display high levels of sales concentration (four-firm concentration greater than 60 percent). The 1992 merger between Super Value and Wetterau violated federal merger enforcement guidelines in at least four market areas, and several more horizontal mergers between merchant grocery wholesalers have been consummated since then.

Análise do segmento exportador da avicultura brasileira no período de 1996 a 2004 AgEcon
Cunha, Denis Antonio da; Dias, Roberto Serpa.
This paper has the main goal of analyzing and evaluating the structure and dynamics of the market from the exporting section of Brazilian chicken raising, from 1996 to 2004. Concentration rates were calculated in order to measure the market share which are dominated by the main companies. The dynamics of the sector position (turnover) was also checked. The reached results point that the sector concentration is higt, and great investments are necessary to the performance in the international market; the placement of the companies was changed mainly due to the ones which had lost positions compared to the first year. However, the concentration has decreased, and there is evidence that the market power hasn’t been used by the companies in a sense of reducing...

Análise da estrutura de mercado na cadeia produtiva do leite no período de 1998 a 2008 AgEcon
Barros, Fabiano Luiz Alves; Lima, Joao Ricardo Ferreira de; Fernandes, Rosangela Aparecida Soares.
The dairy industry productive chain is among the most important domestic agricultural and cattle raising products, accounting for a significant part of agribusiness. In the last years, this sector has undergone significant structural changes, with increased participation of relatively smaller enterprises and reduced number of larger enterprises in the market. The aim of this work is to understand the dynamics between industry and retail performance and the effect on the prices paid to dairy producers. Specifically, this work aims to calculate the sector’s concentration indexes and causality indexes between the prices paid to the producer, the industry markup and the retail prices. Based on price temporal series, a VAR model was estimated and the Granger...

Concentração de mercado e poder de monopsônio na indústria brasileira de esmagamento de soja AgEcon
Carvalho, Lucineia Hipolito de; Aguiar, Danilo Rolim Dias de.
This study aims to analyze the impacts of changes in the structure of the Brazilian soybean crushing industry on the performance of the soybeans complex. It was verified that the trend of concentration in the soybean crushing industry, which had already been verified by previous paper carried out in the decade of 1990, intensified in the beginning of the decade of 2000. The results regarding market power gave support to the hypothesis of monopsony power usage in the purchases of soybeans from the farmers. The results suggest that the crushing firms have had the ability to use market power against soybean farmers. However, the fact that the use of market power has been restricted in the markets where there is excess capacity suggests that the use of market...

Antitrust Analysis of Supermarket Retailing: Common Global Concerns that Play Out in Local Markets AgEcon
Cotterill, Ronald W..
This paper reviews the basic antitrust standards for the supermarket industry including definition of product and geographic markets and the exercise of coordinated and unilateral market power. It surveys the structure-conduct-performance and the New Empirical Industrial Organization literature to highlight alternative tests for supermarket power. The focus is a supermarket chain’s ability to exercise buyer as well as seller power. Recent research on vertical pricing topics including noncompetitive pricing games, double marginalization, private labels, vertical foreclosure, vertical price leadership and price transmission expand the analysis to market channel pricing issues. The availability of comprehensive scanner data, new economic theory and extensive...

THE EFFECT OF MARKET CONCENTRATION ON LAMB MARKETING MARGINS AgEcon
Brester, Gary W.; Musick, Douglas C..
The national four-firm concentration ratio in the lamb slaughtering and processing industry increased from 55 percent in 1980 to 70 percent in 1992. The effect of increasing lamb packer concentration on lamb marketing margins is examined. A relative price spread (RPS) model for farm-to-wholesale and wholesale-to-retail marketing margins was estimated using three-stage least squares (3SLS). The 3SLS results indicate that increased lamb packer concentration has had relatively small, positive effects on lamb marketing margins.
