| Many North Dakota communities find it financially difficult to provide or maintain such necessary services as public safety, water and sewer services, garbage disposal, grocery and retail stores, local credit, medical care and similar other services due to gradual decline in both population and businesses. Declining population also stresses the existing businesses as they compete for a shrinking customer base while the cost of operating a business is likely to be increasing. | Prior research presumes that the U.S. livestock feed demand for dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) can accommodate the rapid growth in DDGS production. The objective of this work is to reexamine the market potential for DDGS by considering factors that limit the adoption rate of DDGS. An estimate of DDGS market size requires information about DDGS inclusion rates, animal populations, and adoption rates. The rapid expansion of the ethanol industry will saturate the dairy and hog markets for DDGS by the end of 2009, while the beef and poultry use must triple to consume all available product. | Trade analysis of retail and service sectors allows economic development practioners to evaluate the performance of these sectors in their respective communities. Estimation of market potential identifies specific business categories (e.g., computer stores) that have potential for further growth. Trade analysis of retail and service sectors in North Dakota shows that except in a few urban counties, such as Cass, Grand Forks, or Burleigh, these sectors were inefficient in retaining and attracting customer dollars.
