Evaluating the Farmer’s-Share-of-the-Retail-Dollar Statistic AgEcon
Brester, Gary W.; Marsh, John M.; Atwood, Joseph A..
Conventional wisdom appears to support the thesis that declines in USDA’s farmer’s share-of-the-retail-dollar (FS) statistics are indicators of low returns to agricultural production. We estimate changes in cattle and hog FS statistics and their relationship with producer surplus (PS) for changes in various exogenous factors. The method accounts for correlations among structural parameter estimates while simulating multivariate distributions of joint parameter realizations. The simulations indicate that relationships between FS and PS depend on the source of exogenous shocks. The lack of informational content in FS statistics suggests these data should not be used for policy purposes.

TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE IN THE U.S. BEEF AND PORK SECTORS: IMPACTS ON FARM-WHOLESALE MARKETING MARGINS AND LIVESTOCK PRICES AgEcon
Marsh, John M.; Brester, Gary W..
Real livestock prices and farm-wholesale marketing margins have steadily declined over the past 20 years. Many studies have examined the effects of increasing packer concentration on these declines. However, most have generally failed to account directly for technological change in livestock production and red meat slaughtering. We estimate reduced form models for beef and pork farm-wholesale marketing margins and cattle and hog prices that specifically include measures of technological change. Empirical results indicate that meat packing technology has reduced real margins and technological change embodied in cattle and hog production accounts for substantial declines in real slaughter cattle and hog prices. When technological change is explicitly...

Analysis of Marketing Margins under Food Recalls and BSE Outbreaks in the U.S. Beef Industry AgEcon
Dhoubhadel, Sunil P.; Castillo, Sergio C.; Capps, Oral, Jr..
It is generally observed that whenever there are cases of disease outbreaks or food recalls, there is a concomitant decline in commodity prices. However, it is still not clear what happens to price spreads among affected agents in the marketing chain. To shed light on this issue, we estimate the collective impact of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) and food recalls on marketing margins associated with the U.S. beef industry over time. In previous research, the effects of these variables on the market demand of meat were estimated separately. By including these variables together in the same model specification we avoid the possibility of confounding their effects, and we are in position to obtain more precise estimates of elasticities of price...

THE EFFECT OF MARKET CONCENTRATION ON LAMB MARKETING MARGINS AgEcon
Brester, Gary W.; Musick, Douglas C..
The national four-firm concentration ratio in the lamb slaughtering and processing industry increased from 55 percent in 1980 to 70 percent in 1992. The effect of increasing lamb packer concentration on lamb marketing margins is examined. A relative price spread (RPS) model for farm-to-wholesale and wholesale-to-retail marketing margins was estimated using three-stage least squares (3SLS). The 3SLS results indicate that increased lamb packer concentration has had relatively small, positive effects on lamb marketing margins.

WHOLESALER MARKUP DECISIONS UNDER DEMAND UNCERTAINTY AgEcon
Park, Timothy A.; Lohr, Luanne.
We examine consistency with economic theory of markup decisions for a risk averse firm facing demand uncertainty. We derive testable comparative static results that describe the influence on the markup of expected demand, demand uncertainty, average variable costs and exogenous demand shifters. We test the model using data from the wholesale market for organic lettuce. Our results demonstrated that risk averse wholesalers raise markups as expected demand increases and reduce them as uncertainty increases.

Analysis of Marketing Margins in Eco-Labeled Products AgEcon
Carambas, Maria Cristina D.M..
This article aims to explain the marketing margins in the eco-labeled products market in Thailand and the Philippines. It focuses on labeled organic agricultural commodities that are commonly exported especially in Europe, which has demand for this type of products. Understanding the interplay of economic variables influencing marketing margins in the eco-labeled market as compared to its conventional counterpart is relevant in understanding how this growing niche market works. The analytical framework developed by Gardner (1975) was used in the analysis to provide a basic understanding of how marketing margins behave. Econometric results show that changes in demand rather than the changes in supply explain most of the variations in margins particularly in...

Emerging supply chains of indigenous pork and their impacts on small-scale farmers in upland areas of Vietnam AgEcon
Huong, Pham Thi Mai; Hau, Nguyen Van; Kaufmann, Brigitte; Valle-Zarate, Anne; Mergenthaler, Marcus.
Rising incomes, urbanization and globalization have been leading to profound changes in the consumption habits of an increasing number of people in developing and transition countries, particularly in Asia. These changes are linked to increasing concerns that small-scale farmers are becoming marginalized in new market set-ups. On the back-ground of these developments we analyze how growing demand for indigenous pork – considered a specialty product among consumers in Vietnam – impacts through newly emerging supply chains on small-scale farmers in upland areas. We analyze supply chains and price transmission as well as compare the impact of marketing institutions on the economics of primary production. Results of market surveys show that carcasses of...

Gonzalez Razo, Felipe de Jesus; Rojo Rubio, Rolando; Ramirez Abarca, Orsohe; Omana Silvestre, Jose Miguel; Matus Gardea, Jaime Arturo; Rebollar Rebollar, Samuel.
The present study analyzes the productive structure and the yield of the companies extractors of derivatives of the mexican lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) in Mexico, by means of the generation of quantitative indicators. The margins of commercialization of different products elaborated by the industry calculated; also they were studied the enterprises profitability. The study is referred to the analysis of 12 industries by-product processors derived from mexican lime, three located in the State of Colima, five in Michoacán, three in Oaxaca and one in the State of Guerrero. The results showed that the industrial derivatives of the mexican lime have in general positive marketing margins to current prices, except in the cases of fresh and dehydrated peel,...

Does Excluding Cross-commodity Interactions Matter? Beef and Lamb in Australia AgEcon
Dent, Siobahn K.; Piggott, Roley R.; O'Donnell, Christopher J.; Griffith, Garry R..
Australian broadacre agriculture is typified by strong cross-commodity relationships, where sheep and cattle grazing enterprises compete for pasture and both compete with wheat and other crops for land. Further, some commodities produced by multi-product farms are also used in the production of final products that are substitutes in demand, such as beef and lamb. Economic analyses of the beef market, for example, should also include consideration of the market for the related product, lamb. In this paper the effects of exogenous demand and supply shifters on the wholesale-farm price ratio in two closely related industries, beef and lamb, are examined in a Gardner type of model and the effects of excluding consideration of the cross-commodity interactions...
