Hydrological and biogeochemical dynamics of the minor and trace elements in the St. Lawrence River ArchiMer
Rondeau, B; Cossa, Daniel; Gagnon, P; Pham, T; Surette, C.
Surface water samples from the St. Lawrence River were collected in order to study the processes controlling minor and trace elements concentrations (Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni and Zn), and to construct mass balances allowing estimates of the relative importance of their natural and anthropogenic sources. The two major water inputs, the upper St. Lawrence River, which drains waters originating from the Lake Ontario, and the Ottawa River were collected fortnightly over 18 months. In addition, other tributaries were sampled during the spring floods. The output was monitored near Quebec City at the river mouth weekly between 1995 and 1999. Dissolved metal concentrations in the upper St. Lawrence River carbonated waters were lower than in the acidic waters of...

Bilan azoté des flux tidaux d'un marais salé à végétation halophyte ArchiMer
Silva, Celine; Raillard, Marieke; Bodoy, Alain; Hussenot, Jerome.
In spring 2001, during a complete tidal cycle, nitrogen fluxes between the sea and the salt marsh were calculated. The marsh (1198 m2) covered in 75 % by halophytes, with 46 % by the sea purslane, Halimione portulacoides. The nitrogen balance shows that the salt marsh imports nitrogen micro-particules (2,09 g) by sedimentation, exports dissolved nitrogen (4,13 g), and that the macro-element part (-1,02 g in fauna and vegetable refuse) in the global mass balance (3,06 g) is not unimportant. Nitrogen fluxes are mainly under inorganic form for the incoming flux (mainly NO3), and under organic form for the outgoing flux. The halophyte vegetation of this marsh seems to play thus a dominating role in the tidal nitrogen exchanges, by a mechanical action on the...

Ice wastage on the Kerguelen Islands (49 degrees S, 69 degrees E) between 1963 and 2006 ArchiMer
Berthier, Etienne; Le Bris, Raymond; Mabileau, Laure; Testut, Laurent; Remy, Frederique.
We observed the wastage of ice masses on the Kerguelen Islands ( Indian Ocean, 49 degrees S, 69 degrees E) using historical information and recent satellite data. Overall, the total ice-covered area on the islands declined from 703 to 552 km(2) between 1963 and 2001, a reduction of 21%. The area of Cook ice cap ( the main ice body) decreased asymmetrically from 501 to 403 km(2). West flowing glaciers lost 11% of their area, while east flowing glaciers lost 28%. After 1991, the retreat rate accelerated from 1.9 km(2)/a ( 1963-1991) to 3.8 km(2)/a ( 1991-2003). Between 1963 and 2000, the ice volume loss was 25-30 km(3), equivalent to an area-average ice-thinning rate of 1.4-1.7 m/a. The glacial retreat took place in the climatic context of a relatively low...

Nutrient export to an Eastern Atlantic coastal zone: first modeling and nitrogen mass balance ArchiMer
Canton, Mathieu; Anschutz, Pierre; Coynel, Alexandra; Polsenaere, Pierre; Auby, Isabelle; Poirier, Dominique.
We have studied 15 catchments supplying freshwater to a French Atlantic coastal lagoon, where increase in nitrogen loads due to agriculture is supposed to have destabilized the ecosystem in the last decades. The catchment is a lowland composed of Pleistocene sands with an average slope of 0.25%. To study the nutrient export in relation to land-use surface waters were sampled bi-weekly between October 2006 and January 2009 and land-use was established by plane photographs and Geographic Information System (GIS). Cultivated pine forests represent more than 80% of the total surface and 7% of the catchment area has been deforested recently. Significant areas of some catchments are used for maize crop. Housing is confined to the coastal zone. Maize and forest...

Mathematical modeling for the management of the carrying capacity of aquaculture enterprises in lakes and reservoirs PAB
Bueno,Guilherme Wolff; Bureau,Dominique; Skipper-Horton,James Owen; Roubach,Rodrigo; Mattos,Flávia Tavares de; Bernal,Francisco Ernesto Moreno.
Abstract: Flooded areas of reservoirs and artificial lakes have been increasingly used for fish production; however, the waste generated by aquaculture has become a concern for the sustainable development of this activity. One of the main strategies adopted by management and regulatory agencies is the use of hydrodynamic models that calculate the carrying or nutrient load capacity of a particular water body and the effect of fish farming. These models are precise in the development of optimal strategies for feeding and waste calculation. This review paper addresses this topic and describes the methodology developed for the analysis and simulation of the carrying capacity for fish production, based on the integration of the Fish-PrFEQ nutritional...

Mass Balance Applied to Brazilian Conventional Broiler Houses during One Production Cycle Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Migliavacca,A; Yanagihara,JI.
ABSTRACT Brazil plays an important role in global poultry production as it is the world's largest chicken exporter and the third largest broiler producer. Despite the development achieved by the Brazilian broiler industry as a result of the integrated production system, many obstacles still need to be overcome, in particular, housing environment. In this regard, detailed knowledge of the inputs, outputs, and primary waste generated by broiler production cycles is essential to establish a baseline for energy balance research studies and to develop environmental solutions. This article proposes a mass balance of conventional broiler houses of southern Brazil sheds in order to predict their outputs, but that may also be applicable to other regions with...

Balance of nitrogen and phosphorus in a reservoir in the tropical semi-arid region Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Andrade,Eunice Maia de; Ferreira,Kássia Crislayne Duarte; Lopes,Fernando Bezerra; Araújo,Isabel Cristina da Silva; Silva,Antônio Givanilson Rodrigues da.
ABSTRACT In relation to the process of eutrophication of water reservoirs, it is necessary to understand the nitrogen and phosphorus supply, as well as they contribute to the eutrophication process. The aim of this research was to quantify the input and the balance of phosphorus and nitrogen, as well as to identify the effect of climate seasonality on dynamics of these nutrients in a reservoir. The campaigns took place from April/2008 to Dec/2012 at the Orós reservoir, located in the semi-arid region of Brazil. Based on dataset it was possible to calculate the inflow and outflow of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). The reservoir becoming a storage place for the nutrients transported by the flow of water from the drainage network. A total of...

SIMULATION OF BIOMASS DYNAMICS IN PLANKTON OF A HIGH-ALTITUDE ANDEAN TROPICAL RESERVOIR IN COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
PARRA-GARCÍA,Edison Andrés; RIVERA-PARRA,Nicole; RODRÍGUEZ,Boris A; HOYOS RINCÓN,Isabel Cristina.
ABSTRACT The understanding of the relationships between the planktonic communities in a reservoir allows us to infer possible changes in the redistribution of matter and energy flows in these systems. This work proposes a dynamic model for the trophic network of the Riogrande II tropical reservoir, which integrates the planktonic trophic chains of detritus and grazing, limiting the prey-predator interactions by introducing the prey meeting factor (pmf). We built a dynamic model of mass balance supported by an extensive bibliographic search. The limitations of consumers and resources were represented simultaneously by means of the pmf. The data used to validate the model were compiled from previous investigations carried out in this reservoir from 2010 to...
