Minimizing maternal effect in salmonid families mixed since eyed stages and a posteriori DNA-pedigreed ArchiMer
Haffray, Pierrick; Vandeputte, Marc; Petit, V.; Pincent, Cedric; Chatain, Beatrice; Chapuis, H.; Meriaux, J. C.; Coudurier, B.; Quillet, E.; Dupont-nivet, M..
Application of DNA parentage assignment for commercial selection in aquaculture is still rare. An experiment was performed to quantify and to minimize maternal effects on growth in rainbow trout. Six hundred families were reared until 198 day post fertilization (dpf) according to two different procedures. In the first procedure (NORM), all families were pooled at eyed stage. In the second procedure (MIN), where maternal effects due to differences in egg size were expected to be minimal, the spawns were divided into sub-groups with similar mean egg weight at eyed stage. These sub-groups were then pooled when they achieved the same mean body length (147 dpf). Genetic parameters were estimated for body weight, body length and condition factor at 198 dpf, with...

Body reserves mediate trade-offs between life-history traits: new insights from small pelagic fish reproduction ArchiMer
Brosset, Pablo; Lloret, Josep; Munoz, Marta; Fauvel, Christian; Van Beveren, Elisabeth; Marques, Virginie; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Menard, Frederic; Saraux, Claire.
Limited resources in the environment prevent individuals from simultaneously maximizing all life-history traits, resulting in trade-offs. In particular, the cost of reproduction is well known to negatively affect energy investment in growth and maintenance. Here, we investigated these trade-offs during contrasting periods of high versus low fish size and body condition (before/after 2008) in the Gulf of Lions. Female reproductive allocation and performance in anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) were examined based on morphometric historical data from the 1970s and from 2003 to 2015. Additionally, potential maternal effects on egg quantity and quality were examined in 2014/2015. After 2008, the gonadosomatic index increased for...

Inheritance of seed coat color in sesame PAB
Laurentin,Hernán; Benítez,Tonis.
The objective of this work was to determine the inheritance mode of seed coat color in sesame. Two crosses and their reciprocals were performed: UCLA37 x UCV3 and UCLA90 x UCV3, of which UCLA37 and UCLA90 are white seed, and UCV3 is brown seed. Results of reciprocal crosses within each cross were identical: F1 seeds had the same phenotype as the maternal parent, and F2 resulted in the phenotype brown color. These results are consistent only with the model in which the maternal effect is the responsible for this trait. This model was validated by recording the seed coat color of 100 F2 plants (F3 seeds) from each cross with its reciprocal, in which the 3:1 expected ratio for plants producing brown and white seeds was tested with the chi-square test. Sesame...

Genetic control of iron concentration in Mesoamerican and Andean common bean seeds PAB
Possobom,Micheli Thaise Della Flora; Ribeiro,Nerinéia Dalfollo; Domingues,Lucas da Silva; Casagrande,Cleiton Renato.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the main differences in the genetic control of the iron concentration in Mesoamerican and Andean common bean seeds, in early generations, and to select recombinants with a high iron concentration in the seeds. F1, F1 reciprocal, F2, F2 reciprocal, and backcross (BC11 and BC12) generations were produced by crosses between Mesoamerican (CNFP 10104 x CHC 01-175) and Andean (Cal 96 x Hooter) inbred lines. The expression of significant maternal effect was observed for the Mesoamerican gene pool. Iron concentration was higher in the seed coat of Mesoamerican common bean seeds (54.61 to 67.92%) and in the embryo of Andean common bean seeds (69.40 to 73.44%). High broad-sense heritability was obtained for iron...

Genetic control of potassium content of common bean seeds PAB
Poersch,Nerison Luís; Ribeiro,Nerinéia Dalfollo; Rosa,Daniele Piano; Possobom,Micheli Thaise Della Flora.
The objective of this work was to investigate possible maternal effects on potassium content of common bean seeds, as well as to estimate the heritability and selection gains in early hybrid generations for this character and to evaluate the efficiency of genetic selection to improve the nutritional quality of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Crosses with four cultivars from the Mesoamerican gene pool yielded the reciprocal F1 and F2 generations and the backcrossed populations (BCP1 and BCP2). The potassium content of the progenies was measured via nitric‑perchloric digestion and flame photometry. The potassium content in the tested progenies varied from 6.0 to 14.9 g kg-1 dry matter, and no significant maternal effect was observed. The narrow-sense...

Impact of piglet birthweight and sow parity on mortality rates, growth performance, and carcass traits in pigs R. Bras. Zootec.
Zotti,Everson; Resmini,Fábio Arnhold; Schutz,Luis Gustavo; Volz,Nilson; Milani,Raul Pelissari; Bridi,Ana Maria; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo; Silva,Caio Abércio da.
ABSTRACT A total of 5502 piglets from 435 sows were selected for evaluation of the effect of piglet birthweight and sow parity on mortality rate (MR), growth performance, and carcass traits in pigs. Piglets were distributed into one of eight categories according to their weight (<600, 601-800, 801-1000, 1001-1200, 1201-1400, 1401-1600, 1601-1800, and >1801 g) and sows were classified according to parity (1-5). The maximum MR during lactation (day 0 to day 21) was found in category <600 g, whereas the lowest was observed in categories ≥1401 g. Pigs with greater body weight (BW) at birth were equivalently greater until 59 days of age. Average daily weight gain (ADG) was improved by increasing piglet birthweight between 0 and 21 days as indicated by...

Estimates of covariance components for hygienic behavior in Africanized honeybees (Apis mellifera) R. Bras. Zootec.
Costa-Maia,Fabiana Martins; Toledo,Vagner de Alencar Arnaut de; Martins,Elias Nunes; Lino-Lourenço,Daniela Andressa; Sereia,Maria Josiane; Oliveira,Carlos Antonio Lopes de; Faquinello,Patrícia; Halak,André Luiz.
Genetic and phenotypic parameters considering the genetic effect on hygienic behavior of queen and workers from 40 Africanized honeybees colonies were estimated separately. Maternal origin of queens was controlled whereas the paternal was unknown, and different groups of workers were considered in three seasons, October 2006, April 2007 and August 2007, but with the same queen. Colonies were 21 honey producers and 19 royal jelly producers. After the method of freezing capped brood, hygienic behavior was determined by the ratio between the number of dead capped brood removed at 24, 48 and 72 hours and the total number of capped brood at zero hour. Data was submitted to single and three traits analyses using Bayesian inference. Estimates of direct...

Estimation models of variance components for farrowing interval in swine BABT
Cavalcante Neto,Aderbal; Lui,Jeffrey Frederico; Sarmento,José Lindenberg Rocha; Ribeiro,Maria Norma; Monteiro,José Mauro Costa; Fonseca,Carlos; Tonhati,Humberto.
The main objective of this study was to evaluate the importance of including maternal genetic, common litter environmental and permanent environmental effects in estimation models of variance components for the farrowing interval trait in swine. Data consisting of 1,013 farrowing intervals of Dalland (C-40) sows recorded in two herds were analyzed. Variance components were obtained by the derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood method. Eight models were tested which contained the fixed effects(contemporary group and covariables) and the direct genetic additive and residual effects, and varied regarding the inclusion of the maternal genetic, common litter environmental, and/or permanent environmental random effects. The likelihood-ratio test indicated...

Genetic effects on seed quality in diallel crosses of popcorn Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Cabral,Pablo Diego Silva; Amaral Júnior,Antonio Teixeira do; Vieira,Henrique Duarte; Santos,Juliana Saltires; Freitas,Ismael Lourenço de Jesus; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga.
The failure to obtain the ideal stand is one of the causes of decreased crop yields, in this sense it is important to investigate the genetic effects related to seed quality. The aim of this study was to measure the general combining ability (GCA), the specific combining ability (SCA) and the reciprocal effects (RE) for popcorn seed quality in addition to evaluate the association between germination and vigor tests with field emergencein order to identify hybrids with better germination and vigour. Ten inbred lines were evaluated using a complete diallel cross with reciprocals. Seed quality was measured by germination tests (GT) and by modified cold vigour tests (MCV). In the GT, the numbers of strong normal seedlings (SNS), weak normal (WNS), abnormal...
