Human activities result in the formation of a mosaic of forest patches within a non-habitat matrix. The response of the local biodiversity to changes in land-use may occur at different scales. It is important to evaluate the effects of the attributes of both the patches and the surrounding landscape on the occupancy of forest patches by animal populations. Here, we assessed the predictive potential of local (basal area, tree density), patch (size, shape) and landscape scale (total area of forest, number of patches, matrix permeability, patch proximity) variables on the occupancy of forest patches by the syntopic primates Alouatta caraya, Sapajus libidinosus and Callithrix penicillata in the city of Goiânia in the Cerrado region of central Brazil. We used... |

Extraction followed by reverse phase liquid chromatography (LC)/electrospray ionization-ion trap-mass spectrometry (ESI-IT-MS) analysis has been successfully developed for the determination of peptaibols, fungal toxic metabolites, in marine sediments. Spiking experiments showed that the mean recovery of target compounds exceeded 85% at a spiking level of 10 ng/g of sediment (wet weight). Detection and quantification limits were 250 and 830 pg/g of sediment, respectively. The method developed constituted the first sensitive assay for quantification of peptaibol trace amounts in a natural environment. A concentration of 5 ng/g in sediment samples collected from Fier d'Ars was found. |

The arrangement and interconnections between various components of the aortic wall influence its physicomechanical properties and functional alterations that occur in disease and ageing. The goat is a suitable model for studying cardiovascular disease, but details of the intrinsic organization of its aorta are unknown. This study therefore investigated the histomorphology of aortic tunica media in the goat by transmission electron microscopy. Sixteen healthy juvenile and adult domestic male goats (capra hircus) purchased from livestock farms in the outskirts of Nairobi were used in the study. The animals were euthanized with overdose of sodium pentabarbitone 20mg/kg, and fixed with 3% phosphate buffered glutaraldehyde solution by gravimetric perfusion.... |
