CLASSIFICATION OF MACAW PALM FRUITS FROM COLORIMETRIC PROPERTIES FOR DETERMINING THE HARVEST MOMENT REA

ABSTRACT Macaw palm (Acrocomia aculeata) is a promising crop for biofuel production due to the high concentration of its fruit oil, but the harvest date is an issue to be better understood so it could be cultivated on an industrial scale. The aim of this study was to use the colorimetric properties of the macaw palm fruits to develop a neural network classifier to determine the ideal moment for harvesting, based on the oil content of the fruit mesocarp. During nine weeks of maturation were sampled 900 fruits of macaw palm fruits and the colorimetric properties of the RGB, HSI and CIELab color models were used to classify the fruits into immature and mature fruits. ABSTRACT Macrobrachium amazonicum (Heller, 1862) is the most important species for aquaculture native to South America. This study evaluates the phenotypic plasticity of females of Macrobrachium amazonicum with respect to the gonadal development, and determines the spawning type. Our study consisted of macro and microscopic analysis of the reproductive tract. Ovaries exhibited the following reproductive cells in developmental sequence: oogonia (OO) - mean diameter and standard deviation of 25.4 ± 6.5 μm; previtellogenic oocyte (PVO) - 61.7 ± 10.7 μm, vitellogenic oocyte (VO) - 113.9 ± 24.5 μm; and mature oocyte (MO) - 308.7 ± 56.3 μm. São divulgados os procedimentos adotados em um estudo desenvolvido no Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Arroz e Feijão (CNPAF), da Embrapa, que permitiram a identificação das características da planta de feijão (grãos e vagens) que podem ser utilizadas como indicadores visuais da maturação fisiológica da semente e que asseguram a obtenção de produto de boa qualidade.

The Japan oyster: Crassostrea gigas have been imported on the french coasts in the seventies and from this time it adapted to this environment. Since, it became the main oyster producted in France. But ,since twenty years C. gigas presents an anormaly and important mortality eah year in the period of summer. The syndrome known as summer mortality, appears particulary in mid-june. This mortality can affected 50% of the culture. Many studies have brought elements in the comprehension of the condition of apparition of this mortalilities. Determinism of Temporal Variability in Size at Maturation of Sardine Sardina pilchardus in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer

Age and size at maturation appear as key parameters governing the dynamics of a population as they affect growth rate, fecundity, and survival. The expression of such life history traits is determined by genetic make-up and modulated by environmental factors mainly through phenotypic plasticity. Moreover, fishing, besides decreasing population size and changing demographic composition can alter allelic frequencies through fisheries-induced evolution by selecting for some particular traits. This paper investigates the biological responses of Crassostrea gigas under traditional culture conditions on a mudflat in Marennes-Oleron bay. Summer mortality has been regularly observed in recent years in oysters reared using "on bottom" culture conditions. The present study attempts to provide a better understanding of the mortality phenomenon through biological parameters. Classical 'field parameters' such as mortality and growth rates, and quality index (dry meat weight/ dry shell weight x 1000) were monitored. Sperm characteristics of scallops have not been well described in the scientific literature. The effects of sperm release technique (thermal shock versus serotonin injection), of sperm collection technique (testis sampling versus serotonin injection), of sperm sampling location along the genital tract, of in vitro sperm maturation, and of time post activation on scallop sperm characteristics were assessed in the present work. Innovations in the nursery culture and maturation of bivalves are being worked on at aIl levels of research and production, but transfer to the development stage must be effected differently in each case. Over the past twenty years, there have been a great many innovations in bivalve rearing, most of which may be described in terms of rearing conditions: higher and lower densities; confined or open environemnt; overflow; upwelling; floating, suspended, raised or ground systems, etc. The quality of an innovation is characterized by its influence on the efficient operation of the specific culture program and by how easily it may be transferred.

Introduction: During each summer season, the IFREMER laboratory of Arcachon monitors, within the framework of the agreement with the Arcachon- Aquitaine Shellfish Farming Regional Section (SRC), the reproduction of cup oysters in the Arcachon basin. The cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas was first introduced in France in 1967 [13]. On the Atlantic coast, the Marennes Oléron Bay (Figure 1) is the first European oyster culture basin with a cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas) stock of 110,000 tons and an annual output of 30,000 to 40,000 tons. The Ronce oyster bank, located at the south of the bay (Figure 1), is made of 1,600 concessions spread out over 175 ha. It produces 8,000 to 10,000 tons of cupped oysters each year. In Japan, Crassostrea gigas has been cultivated for more than 1,000 years (Farley, 1992). Depuis de nombreuses années, les biologistes étudiant des poissons d'eau douce, ont mis en évidence les relations existant entre le cycle de maturation et les facteurs environnementaux tels que la température et la photopériode (Bullough, 1940 ; Merinan & Schedl, 1941 ; Harrington 1957, Henderson, 1963...). En aquaculture, pour des espèces tempérées comme le loup, la dorade, le turbot, dès 1973, l'opportunité du décalage de la saison de ponte grâce au raccourcissement des cycles environnementaux naturels, est démontré (Girin & Devauchelle, 1978). Sur le loup (Dicentrarchus labrax), des pontes décalées ont pu être obtenues par manipulation du seuil facteur est également reprise par Suquet (1987) puis par Bouget (1988), sur la dorade (Sparus aurata)....
