Thermal modelling and performance assessment of a circular greenhouse with solar chimney assisted ventilation and fog Cooling CIGR Journal
Misra, Debajit; Ghosh, Sudip.
This paper presents a conceptualized model of a solar chimney-assisted naturally ventilated circular greenhouse applicable for hot and arid regions. Instead of conventional rectangular shape, a circular shape is chosen which makes the greenhouse independent of wind direction and orientation with regards to the wind-induced ventilation. Pressurised fogging system is considered as the mode of distributed evaporative cooling. A circular twin-wall solar chimney is centrally mounted which is suitably sized to provide buoyancy-induced natural ventilation. The solar induced ventilation is sufficient, giving 0.6-0.75 air change per minute (ACM). The analysis revealed that during the peak ambient temperatures, the greenhouse inside temperature could be lowered by 4...

DEVELOPMENT OF A MODIFIED PALM-NUT CRACKER CIGR Journal
Alade, Eyitope Israel; Koya, Olufemi Adebola; Omidiji, Babatunde Victor.
This study examined the major shortcomings of conventional crackers, and developed a modified palm-nut cracker with the view of reducing the level of mechanical kernel damage. Equation relating the required speed for cracking operation and force requirement in fracturing the nut was expressed, and the force was experimentally determined before machine development. The machine was designed and fabricated based on standard engineering principles for part-sizing and selection of materials. The machine was tested with dura nuts classified into four groups of sizes and varied during experimentation. The performance evaluation of the machine show that cracking efficiency ranged between 86.10-97.27% at an average value of 4.49% kernel breakage and whole kernels...

Ergonomic evaluation of cashew nut shelling machine CIGR Journal
OYELAKIN, OLATUNJI OBAFEMI.
This paper presents the ergonomic evaluation of a manually operated village-level cashew nut shelling machine. A manually operated cashew nut cracking machine was evaluated. Fifty subjects took part in the study, with physiological, postural, and subjective measurements being taken. Comfort Questionnaire for cashew nut cracking machine (CQC) was also evaluated. Using the machine resulted in postural discomfort. The perception of the subjects as per the efficiency of the machine was neutral; 50% accepted that the machine is efficient, while the other 50% were unsatisfied. Following a participatory ergonomic process and using appropriate anthropometric measurements, an improved, adjustable prototype was developed. The lever arm was designed based on 5th...

DEVELOPMENT OF A VARIABLE SIZE NUT CRACKER CIGR Journal
Ogundare, Adebayo; Ojolo, Sunday.
In this work, a variable size nut cracking machine has been designed and constructed to improve the efficiency of shelling operation of quite a number of nuts. The machine is designed to be adaptable to the cracking requirements of some number of nuts, whose shell can be processed to brittleness. The machine performs two operations, shelling of the nut and separation of the shell from the nut. The machine comprises of a hopper, rectangular box housing the cracking drum and compression plate, and a two stage agitated separating tray (to sort the nut from the shell), all supported by a frame. The cracking drum, which is driven by a v-belt connected to an electric motor, also provide the agitation to the separating tray via a v-belt connected a cam mounted...

Pressure build-up and wear analysis of tapered screw extruder biomass briquetting machines CIGR Journal
Orisaleye, Joseph Ifeolu; Ojolo, Sunday Joshua; Ajiboye, Joseph S.
The design of efficient screw extruder biomass briquetting machines is important for the utilization of loose biomass materials from wood and agricultural wastes for the production of solid fuel. In this study, the effects of geometrical parameters (channel depth and helix angle) and operational parameters (friction coefficient, mass flow rate and speed) on the performance and design of the briquetting machine were investigated using a pressure model based on the plug flow theory. An analytical model, which utilizes the pressure model, was also developed from Archard’s wear law to investigate screw wear of biomass briquetting machines. The study on the pressure model showed that a shallow screw channel and small helix angle resulted in rapid pressure...

PERFORMANCE EFFICIENCY MODEL OF AN INTEGRATED PALM-NUT CRACKER AND KERNEL-SHELL SEPARATOR CIGR Journal
Alade, Eyitope Israel; Koya, Olufemi Adebola; Omidiji, Babatunde Victor.
A mathematical model for predicting the performance efficiency of an integrated palm-nut cracker and kernel-shell separator was developed using dimensional analysis based on Buckingham’s π theorem. The developed performance model was iterated in Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB), to predict the efficiencies, by varying the parameters of the materials in contact. The predicted performance efficiencies ranged between 88.26 – 99.98%, while the evaluated performance efficiencies were in the range of 56.16 – 96.57%. The correlation between the predicted and experimental numerical values using MINITAB 17 suggested relationship and validity of the developed model (optimum r2 = 99.6%).
