Clinical and pathological aspects of gossypiboma in a dog: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,R.; Matsui,A.; Ribeiro,J.O.; Simionato,G.; Simamura,A.C.; Canola,J.; Camplesi,A.; Vasconcelos,R.O.; Moraes,P. C..
ABSTRACT A female dog was treated at the Veterinary Hospital Governador Laudo Natel for symptomscaused by an intra-abdominal gossypiboma (gossypium: cotton; boma: place of hiding). Showing high morbidity and mortality, the gossypiboma is a granulomatous reaction that is formed in response to exposure to a textile matrix. The objective of this report is to describe the clinical and pathological findings of an intra-abdominal gossypiboma in a female dog. This patient arrived at urgent care showing increased abdominal volume, pain, and cachexia. Ultrasonography showed a regular contour formation that could not be completely delimited. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy and died in the postoperative period. The gossypiboma had a smooth, firm, and...

Is the emergence of fungal resistance to medical triazoles related to their use in the agroecosystems? A mini review BJM
Ribas e Ribas,Aícha Daniela; Spolti,Pierri; Del Ponte,Emerson Medeiros; Donato,Katarzyna Zawada; Schrekker,Henri; Fuentefria,Alexandre Meneghello.
Abstract Triazole fungicides are used broadly for the control of infectious diseases of both humans and plants. The surge in resistance to triazoles among pathogenic populations is an emergent issue both in agriculture and medicine. The non-rational use of fungicides with site-specific modes of action, such as the triazoles, may increase the risk of antifungal resistance development. In the medical field, the surge of resistant fungal isolates has been related to the intensive and recurrent therapeutic use of a limited number of triazoles for the treatment and prophylaxis of many mycoses. Similarities in the mode of action of triazole fungicides used in these two fields may lead to cross-resistance, thus expanding the spectrum of resistance to multiple...

Comparison between the availability of iron in the presence of vitamin a and β-carotene in foods and medications Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Martini,Fabiana Cristina Camargo; Canniatti-Brazaca,Solange Guidolin.
The objective of this work was to verify the availability of iron in the presence of vitamin A as components of foods and in combinations with medicines. The iron available was measured in the presence of vitamin A in foods - common bean (B), beef liver (Li) and carrot (C) - and medicines - Fer-In-Sol® (Fer) (Mead Johnson), Arovit® (A) (Roche) and Neutrofer® (N) (Sigma Pharma) - as well as in combinations of both. β-carotene, vitamin A, total iron, heme and non heme iron, percentage of dialyzable iron and amount of dialyzable iron was determined. Vitamin A and β-carotene had a positive effect on the percentage of iron dialysis. Carrot and liver had a better percentage of dialyzable iron than their respective medicine at similar concentrations. Therefore,...

Liquid chromatographic determination of efficacy of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in brine shrimp (<i>Artemia</i> spp.) used for prophylactic chemotherapy of fish OMA
Nelis, H.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
The brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> , an excellent live food source in aquaculture, has been studied as a carrier to deliver selected chemotherapeutic agents to fish for prophylactic treatment of infectious diseases. To monitor the efficiency of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in <i><i>Artemia</i> franciscana</i>, a sensitive and specific analytical method was developed. It is based on homogenization of <i>Artemia</i> nauplii in methanol, extraction of lipids with hexane, solid-phase cleanup on C18 cartridges, and reversed-phase liquid chromatography with detection at 210 nm. The method is sensitive (detection limit, on the order of 3 µg/g with a sample quantity of 30 mg...
