Wilde, J.J.F.E. de. |
The African genus Heckeldora (Meliaceae) is revised. Contrary to earlier views the widespread and variable H. staudtii is shown to consist of four distinct entities, each worthy of specific status. Heckeldora zenkeri is therefore re-instated and two other species, originally described in the much larger genus Guarea, and formerly also considered conspecific with H. staudtii, are resurrected and formally transferred to Heckeldora. In addition, two new species, H. jongkindii J.J. de Wilde from Liberia and H. trifoliolata J.J. de Wilde from Gabon are recognized and described. Heckeldora mangenotiana is transferred to Guarea and the new combination made. A key to the six Heckeldora species now recognized is provided and maps of their distribution are presented. |

Muellner, A.N.; Mabberley, D.J.. |
For decades, the rare Malesian shrublet hitherto called Turraea breviflora, was the only species of the pantropical family Meliaceae which could not confidently be placed in a genus. Previous morphological re-investigation led to the exclusion of the species from Turraea and suggested possibly close links with Munronia. In this study, parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of DNA sequence data from plastid rbcL and nuclear ITS rDNA were used to infer the phylogenetic position of T. breviflora and its affinities to other representatives of the family. Phylogenetic analyses support Mabberley’s (1995a) proposal that the concept of the genus Munronia be expanded to accommodate it. The new combination Munronia breviflora (Ridl.) Mabb. &... |

Developmental response of the mahogany shootborer, Hypsipyla grandella (Zeller), to temperature was determined in laboratory trials in Turrialba, Costa Rica. Two hundred fresh eggs (less than 24h old) were placed individually inside glass flasks, and exposed to seven constant temperatures (10, 12.5, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C), in separate experiments. These were carried out in environmental chambers, at 80-90% relative humidity and 8L:16D photoperiod. After hatch, larvae were fed tender foliage of Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata) and were inspected every 24h to determine larval and pupal duration, and adult emergence, at each temperature. Relationships between these variables and temperature were analyzed by means of ANOVA, regression and correlation... |

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. |

Aqueous solutions of neem oil and aqueous extracts of neem seeds and leaves were sprayed on coffee fruits for laboratory evaluation of their efficiency in reducing infestation of the coffee borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), in multi-choice preference assays in laboratory. Neem oil and extracts reduced infestation of fruits in a dose-dependent manner, acting as a repellent. At 0.5%, 1% and 1.5%, the oil reduced fruit infestation by 30.2%, 42.5% (P > 0.05), and 58.6% (P < 0.05), respectively, as compared with the control. Seed extracts at 1%, 2% and 4% (w/v) reduced infestation by 30.9%, 38.3% (P > 0.05) and 70.2% (P < 0.05), respectively; seed extracts at 0.15%, 1.5% and 15% (w/v) reduced fruit infestation by 16.5%, 38.5% (P >... |

Insecticide plants are an important tool among the new alternatives for pest control in IPM systems because they reduce the use of synthetic insecticides, preserving human health and the environment. We investigated the effects of aqueous extracts of Melia azedarach leaves and Azadirachta indica seeds and three tomato genotypes, 'Santa Clara', 'IPA-5' - Solanum lycopersicum (= Lycopersicon esculentum Mill), and LA444-1 - S. peruvianum (= L. peruvianum), on the development, reproduction and longevity of the tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), under laboratory conditions. The trials were set up in a completely randomized design, with nine treatments [three genotypes x two extracts (M. azedarach and A. indica) and control]. The replication consisted on... |

Plotococcus Miller & Denno is synonymized with Leptococcus Reyne (Coccoidea: Pseudococcidae). The genus is redescribed and the adult female of the type species, L. metroxyli Reyne, is redescribed and illustrated. All species hitherto included in Plotococcus are transferred to Leptococcus as L. capixaba (Kondo) comb. nov., L. eugeniae (Miller & Denno) comb. nov., L. hambletoni (Kondo) comb. nov., L. minutus (Hempel) comb. nov., and L. neotropicus (Williams & Granara de Willink) comb. nov. A new species of Leptococcus, L. rodmani Kondo sp. n., from leaves of Guarea guidonia (Meliaceae) from Colombia, is described and illustrated based on the adult female. A revised key to adult females of all species in the genus is provided. |
