Processing fish press waters using metallic and ceramic filtration ArchiMer
Perez-galvez, Raul; Guadix, Emilia M.; Berge, Jean-pascal; Guadix, Antonio.
BACKGROUND The press juices resulting from a compacting operation on fish by-products were subjected to a depuration treatment in order to reduce the high COD (120 g O2 L–1). The process included an initial de-particulation step by means of two metallic filter cartridges of 465 µm and 250 µm, followed by concentration with a 200 nm ultrafiltration ceramic membrane. The polishing efficiency of each unit was assessed in terms of COD and protein removal. RESULTS Dead-end metallic filtration of the press waters reduced their suspended matter content by 28%, but achieved only 5.6% decrease in chemical oxygen demand (COD), which suggested further processing by membrane ultrafiltration. The de-particulated stream was then subjected to ultrafiltration for 8 h in...

Jaburetox: update on a urease-derived peptide J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Becker-Ritt,Arlete Beatriz; Portugal,Camila Saretta; Carlini,Célia Regina.
Abstract Urease from Canavalia ensiformis seeds was the first enzyme ever to be crystallized, in 1926. These proteins, found in plants, bacteria and fungi, present different biological properties including catalytic hydrolysis of urea, and also enzyme-independent activities, such as induction of exocytosis, pro-inflammatory effects, neurotoxicity, antifungal and insecticidal properties. Urease is toxic to insects and fungi per se but part of this toxicity relies on an internal peptide (~11 kDa), which is released upon digestion of the protein by insect enzymes. A recombinant form of this peptide, called jaburetox (JBTX), was constructed using jburell gene as a template. The peptide exhibits liposome disruption properties, and insecticidal and fungicidal...

Utilization of fluorescent probe association for simultaneous assessment of plasmatic, acrosomal, and mitochondrial membranes of rooster spermatozoa Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Celeghini,ECC; Arruda,RP; Albuquerque,R; Silva,FHA; Faria,DE; Andrade,AFC; Nascimento,J; Raphael,CF.
This experiment was designed with the objective of developing a simple, practical, and high repeatability technique for the simultaneous evaluation of the integrity of the plasmatic and acrosomal membranes, as well as funcional mitochondria of domestic fowl spermatozoa using an association of fluorescent probes. Four ejaculates (motility > 80% and abnormal morphology < 10%) from each of six Ross male broiler breeder (n=24) were diluted in TALP sperm medium (25x10(6) spermatozoa/mL) and split into two aliquots, and one of these aliquots was flash frozen in liquid nitrogen and thawed to damage all cellular membranes. Three treatments were prepared from these aliquots, with the following ratios of Fresh semen:Flash frozen semen: 100:0 (T100), 50:50...

Pectin degradation in ripening and wounded fruits Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
HUBER,DONALD J.; KARAKURT,YASAR; JEONG,JIWON.
Pectin depolymerization during fruit ripening has been shown to be largely due to pectinolytic enzymes, including polygalacturonases (E.C. 3.2.1.15) and pectinmethylesterases (E.C. 3.2.1.11). Studies have shown that these enzymes are not the primary determinants of softening, although participation in texture changes during the late stages of ripening seems evident. Pectin depolymerization differs significantly between various fruit types, notably avocado and tomato, even though levels of extractable PG activity in these fruits are similar. Collective evidence indicates that the activities of some cell wall enzymes are restricted in vivo, with maximum hydrolytic potential expressed only in response to tissue disruption or wounding. In contrast, other...

Salicylic acid permeation: A comparative study with different vehicles and membranes Biocell
Olivella,Mónica S.; Debattista,Nora B.; Pappano,Nora B..
Considering the skin´s function, different dermal pharmaceutical forms can be developed according to the type of therapeutic activity, active principle and excipients involved in the formulation, such as “transdermal preparations”. In the present study, the permeation parameters of the non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug, salicylic acid (SA) through synthetic membrane, polyvinyliden difluoride, and a biological membrane, egg shell membrane, with different vehicles, propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol and carbopol gel, were determined. The reported physicochemical parameters of SA from CG were significantly higher than those obtained using PG and IP. This is attributed to the lipophilic nature of the vehicle that facilitates the release and penetration of...

Properties of films obtained from biopolymers of different origins for skin lesions therapy BABT
Bellini,Márcia Zilioli; Oliva-Neto,Pedro de; Moraes,Ângela Maria.
In this study, the effects of the origin of xanthan used, in combination with chitosan, to prepare films for the treatment of skin lesions were evaluated. The characteristics of the films obtained with xanthan commercially available for the food industry sector and xanthan originated from a fermentation process conducted in a pilot plant were compared. Results showed that the source did not strongly interfere in many of the properties of the films, such as the mechanical properties, cytotoxicity to L929 cells, absorption of simulated body fluid and culture medium, stability in water and saline solution. Hence, even though the properties of biopolymers of different sources might vary, the films prepared with two distinct types of xanthan gum could be...

Optimizing the operational conditions of a membrane bioreactor used for domestic wastewater treatment BABT
Viana,Priscilla Zuconi; Nobrega,Ronaldo; Jordão,Eduardo Pacheco; Azevedo,José Paulo Soares de.
This study evaluated the performance of a sidestream membrane module combined with an aeration system for the treatment of municipal wastewater. To investigate the membrane's behavior and to control fouling, trials in laboratory units were conducted. In these tests, optimal values were established for some operational parameters, such as crossflow velocity, transmembrane pressure and air supply to continuously flush the membrane surface. Air supply improved the behavior of the permeate flux over time. After six hours operation, the stabilized flux was 35 L/m².h at a total pressure of 0.40 bar (wastewater pressure of 0.05 bar and air pressure of 0.35 bar) and Reynolds Number of 4,600. All permeate samples analyzed indicated absence of fecal coliform and...
