Gender-dependent association of HSD11B1 single nucleotide polymorphisms with glucose and HDL-C levels Genet. Mol. Biol.
Turek,Luciane Viater; Leite,Neiva; Souza,Ricardo Lehtonen Rodrigues; Lima,Jovana Karoline; Milano,Gerusa Eisfeld; Timossi,Luciana da Silva; Osiecki,Ana Claudia Vecchi; Osiecki,Raul; Alle,Lupe Furtado.
In this study, we investigated the influence of two SNPs (rs846910 and rs12086634) of the HSD11B1 gene that encodes 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1(11β-HSD1), the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of cortisol to cortisone, on variables associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome in 215 individuals of both sexes from southern Brazil. The HSD11B1 gene variants were genotyped using the TaqMan SNP genotyping assay. Glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were measured by standard automated methods. Significant results were found in women, with carriers of the G allele of SNP rs12086634 having higher glucose levels than non-carriers. Carriers of the A allele of SNP rs846910 had higher levels of...

Evaluation of Lingual Frenulum Using Geometric Morphometrics International Journal of Morphology
Kacar,Dundar; Cakmak,Fethiye; Dogan,Ash; Sevinc,Ozdemir; Barut,Cagatay.
A fold of tissue, the lingual frenulum, extends onto the inferior surface of the tongue from near the base of the tongue on midline. The shape, length and alignment of lingual frenulum vary between individuals. The aim of this study is to evaluate morphology of lingual frenulum with respect to gender. Ninety seven volunteers who were students and employees of Zonguldak Karaelmas University, School of Medicine participated in the study. Two individuals with a history of hepatitis and 20 individuals with inadequate photographs were excluded from the study. Morphometric analyses were performed on the photographs of 75 volunteers (36 men, 39 women). Lingual frenulum photograph of each individual was taken using standard photographic techniques. The individual...

HPV-related external genital lesions among men residing in Brazil BJID
Silva,Roberto Jose Carvalho da; Sudenga,Staci Lynn; Sichero,Laura; Baggio,Maria Luiza; Galan,Lenice; Cintra,Ricardo; Torres,Benji Nelson; Stoler,Mark; Giuliano,Anna Regina; Villa,Luisa Lina.
Abstract The aims of this study were to determine the incidence of external genital lesions (EGLs), specifically histologically confirmed condyloma (genital warts) and Penile Intraepithelial Neoplasia (PeIN), and genital HPV infection progression to EGLs among healthy men aged 18-73 residing in Brazil. Subjects included 1118 men enrolled in the HPV Infection in Men (HIM) study between July 2005 and June 2009. At each visit, EGLs were biopsied and subjected to pathological evaluation. HPV status in genital swabs and biopsies was determined by Linear Array and INNO-LiPA, respectively. Age-specific EGLs incidence and the proportion and median time to EGL development were estimated. Kaplan-Meier cumulative incidence rates at 6, 12, and 24 months were...

Presence of highly oncogenic human papillomavirus in the oral mucosa of asymptomatic men BJID
Machado,Ana Paula; Almeida,Flávia Gatto de; Bonin,Camila Mareti; Prata,Thiago Theodoro Martins; Ávilla,Leandro Sobrinho; Padovani,Cacilda Tezelli Junqueira; Ferreira,Alda Maria Teixeira; Fernandes,Carlos Eurico dos Santos; Tozetti,Inês Aparecida.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify highly oncogenic forms of human papillomavirus in the oral mucosa of asymptomatic men.METHODS: In this study, we analyzed samples of exfoliated cells from the oral cavity of 559 asymptomatic men. DNA-human papillomavirus was detected using the consensus primers PGMY09/11; viral genotyping was performed using type-specific PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism.RESULTS: DNA-human papillomavirus was detected in 1.3% of the study participants and of those 42.8% were infected by more than one type of virus. Viral types included HPV6, 11, 89 (low oncogenic risk), and HPV52, 53 (high oncogenic risk). Increased vulnerability to human papillomavirus infection was observed in individuals aged over 26...
