Cross-shelf exchanges in the northern Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Akpınar, Anil; Charria, Guillaume; Theetten, Sebastien; Vandermeirsch, Frederic.
The spatio-temporal distribution of cross-shelf exchanges in the northern Bay of Biscay from 2007 to 2010 were investigated using a high-resolution three-dimensional model as well as sea-surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration satellite observations. Our results show that the net yearly mean transport was upslope each year, with 2010 showing the highest value (0.93 Sv upslope). Bottom fluxes showed peak values near Chapel Bank, with mean values of 0.1 m3 s−1 m−2 and maximum values of 0.2 m3 s−1 m−2. Our model demonstrated that cross-shelf exchanges can be divided into three vertical layers. At the surface, cross-shelf transports are driven by wind forcing (Ekman transport accounts for about 60% of the total cross-shelf transport) and mesoscale...

Spatial and temporal variability of zooplankton off New Caledonia (Southwestern Pacific) from acoustics and net measurements ArchiMer
Smeti, Houssem; Pagano, Marc; Menkes, Christophe; Lebourges-dhaussy, Anne; Hunt, Brian P. V.; Allain, Valerie; Rodier, Martine; De Boissieu, Florian; Kestenare, Elodie; Sammari, Cherif.
Spatial and temporal distribution of zooplankton off New Caledonia in the eastern Coral Sea was studied during two multidisciplinary cruises in 2011, during the cool and the hot seasons. Acoustic measurements of zooplankton were made using a shipborne acoustic Doppler current profiler (S-ADCP), a scientific echosounder and a Tracor acoustic profiling system (TAPS). Relative backscatter from ADCP was converted to biomass estimates using zooplankton weights from net-samples collected during the cruises. Zooplankton biomass was estimated using four methods: weighing, digital imaging (ZooScan), ADCP and TAPS. Significant correlations were found between the different biomass estimators and between the backscatters of the ADCP and the echosounder. There was a...

Mesoscale dynamics in the Arabian Sea and a focus on the Great Whirl life cycle: A numerical investigation using ROMS ArchiMer
Vic, Clement; Roullet, Guillaume; Carton, Xavier; Capet, X..
The Great Whirl (GW) is a persistent anticyclonic mesoscale eddy that is observed seasonally in the Arabian Sea during a period embedding the 3 months of the southwest monsoon (June–July–August) at a quasi-steady location. Its dynamics remain unclear despite it being one of the largest coherent vortices in the world ocean. Realistic regional numerical experiments using ROMS are performed to investigate the life cycle of the GW, which is not well resolved by sparse available in situ measurements in the region. Using a set of sensitivity experiments and an accurate temporal characterization of the eddy properties (including position, radius, depth, and vorticity) we (i) confirm the role of basin-scale downwelling Rossby waves in the GW generation, (ii)...

Monitoring the Influence of the Mesoscale Ocean Dynamics on Phytoplanktonic Plumes around the Marquesas Islands Using Multi-Satellite Missions ArchiMer
Cassianides, Angelina; Martinez, Elodie; Maes, Christophe; Carton, Xavier; Gorgues, Thomas.
The Marquesas islands are a place of strong phytoplanktonic enhancement, whose original mechanisms have not been explained yet. Several mechanisms such as current−bathymetry interactions or island run-off can fertilize waters in the immediate vicinity or downstream of the islands, allowing phytoplankton enhancement. Here, we took the opportunity of an oceanographic cruise carried out at the end of 2018, to combine in situ and satellite observations to investigate two phytoplanktonic blooms occurring north and south of the archipelago. First, Lagrangian diagnostics show that both chlorophyll-a concentrations (Chl) plumes are advected from the islands. Second, the use of Finite-size Lyaponov Exponent and frontogenesis diagnostics reveal how the Chl plumes...

Anticyclonic eddies connecting the western boundaries of Indian and Atlantic oceans ArchiMer
Laxenaire, R.; Speich, S.; Blanke, Bruno; Chaigneau, A.; Pegliasco, C.; Stegner, A..
The Indo‐Atlantic interocean exchanges achieved by Agulhas Rings are tightly linked to global ocean circulation and climate. Yet, they are still poorly understood because they are difficult to identify and follow. We propose here an original assessment on Agulhas Rings, achieved by TOEddies, a new eddy identification and tracking algorithm that we applied over 24 years of satellite altimetry. Its main novelty lies in the detection of eddy splitting and merging events. These are particularly abundant and significantly impact the concept of a trajectory associated with a single eddy, which becomes less obvious than previously admitted. To overcome this complication, we have defined a network of segments that group together in relatively complex trajectories....

Suppressing and enhancing effects of mesoscale dynamics on biological production in the Mozambique Channel ArchiMer
Jose, Y. S.; Penven, P.; Aumont, O.; Machu, E.; Moloney, C. L.; Shillington, F.; Maury, O..
We used a coupled physical-biogeochemical model to investigate how the strong eddy activity typical of the Mozambique Channel affects biological production. A numerical experiment was carried out, in which mesoscale dynamics were suppressed by cancelling the nonlinear terms for horizontal momentum in the Naviers-Stokes equation. Mesoscale dynamics were found to be responsible for (1) increased offshore production in the Mozambique Channel as a result of net eddy-induced offshore transport of nutrient-rich coastal waters; (2) decreased shelf production along the central Mozambican and south-west Madagascar coast caused by a reduction in nutrient availability related to the net eddy-induced lateral transport of nutrients; (3) increased coastal production...
