Worldwide supplies of fish oils and meals have reached their sustainable limits, forcing industries to look for alternative lipid sources for use in marine fish diets. As terrestrial animal products are prohibited, there is great interest in aquaculture to produce fish better able to utilise vegetable feedstuffs. Vegetable products are rich in 18 carbon fatty acids (C18 FA) but do not contain C20-22 n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA), such as ecosapentaenoic (EPA; 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA; 22:6n-3). The aim of this study was to know if it would be possible to apply a metabolic programming using nutritional conditioning during early larval stages, as already described in mammals, in order to stimulate the FA desaturation pathways...

Litter Size Reduction Induces Metabolic and Histological Adjustments in Dams throughout Lactation with Early Effects on Offspring Anais da ABC (AABC)

In the present study we analyzed morphological and metabolic alterations in dams nursing small litters and their consequences to offspring throughout lactation. Offspring sizes were adjusted to Small Litter (SL, 3 pups/ dam) and Normal Litter (NL, 9 pups/ dam). Body weight, food intake, white adipose tissue (WAT) content, histological analysis of the pancreas, mammary gland (MG) and brown adipose tissue (BAT) as well as, plasma parameters and milk composition were measured in dams and pups on the 7th, 14th and 21st days of lactation. In general, SL-dams presented higher body weight and retroperitoneal fat content, elevated fat infiltration in BAT, reduced islets size and hyperglycemia throughout lactation in relation to NL-dams (p<0.05). Early nutrition plays a long-term role in the predisposition to chronic diseases and influences the metabolism of several drugs. This may happen through cytochromes P450 (CYPs) regulation, which are the main enzymes responsible for the metabolism of xenobiotics. Here, we analyzed the effects of maternal protein restriction (MPR) on the expression and activity of hepatic offspring’s CYPs during 90 days after birth, using Wistar rats as a mammal model.
